Under the full moon, the air in the suburbs was damp, surrounded by a layer of misty moisture. This humidity clung to their bodies, creating an uncomfortable sensation as if countless tiny creatures were crawling all over them. However, Lin Yi was in high spirits; having such a pure and powerful follower was undeniably a delightful matter.
What once appeared to be eerie sparse lighting now resembled neon lights on a stage, exuding a sense of grandeur as if a king had returned. Lin Yi had always planned to build his Mercenary group into the most powerful one in the world. Although that path was still far away, it felt like a good start. If he could attract more powerful vampires due to Nicolas's influence, the combat strength of his Mercenary group would soar. However, the immediate priority was to find a solid training path to quickly enhance the entire team's combat capabilities. After all, relying solely on Abilities or Mutants for strength enhancement was somewhat unreliable; there simply weren't enough Abilities or Mutants in the world.
The two moved like phantoms in the night, seemingly slow yet covering dozens of meters with each step as they hurried toward the city center. Witerson II was still at the hospital, and Lin Yi felt a twinge of concern about any potential mishaps.
Perhaps feeling a bit too pleased with themselves, Lin Yi and Nicolas failed to notice the unusual situation ahead. When they reached the city center, they suddenly encountered a convoy of armored vehicles heading out toward the suburbs, colliding directly with them.
Lin Yi and Nicolas were wandering the streets late at night, naturally feeling somewhat guilty. Upon spotting the approaching armored convoy, they instinctively prepared to evade.
Suddenly, the armored vehicles that had been moving in an orderly fashion began to emit a creaking sound—those were the noises of gun turrets rotating! In the next moment, the previously unlit headlights of the armored vehicles flicked on, shining directly on Lin Yi and Nicolas.
This is bad! We can't escape! Lin Yi thought grimly. With tensions high everywhere, they indeed looked suspicious. The individuals inside the armored vehicles were likely from the Milan Defense Zone's City Defense Force. Although they weren't Zombies, wandering around on the streets at this hour would not earn them any favor from these soldiers even in peacetime.
"Raise your hands!" came a cold command from the other side. Lin Yi could even feel several beams of light focusing on them. The dampness on their skin began to heat up under these bright lights.
Nicolas coughed softly a few times; his meaning was clear—should they make a run for it? Given their unusual speed, even if targeted by missiles, they had confidence in escaping!
"They've locked us with Laser Beams!" Lin Yi had just released his mental energy for a quick scan and was immediately drenched in cold sweat. His perception indicated at least three directions where Laser Beams were aimed at them; if they dared to make any sudden movements, they would likely be shot through the head in an instant!
Nicolas's expression grew increasingly grim; beads of sweat began to form on his originally sharp and thin face as if he were lost in a vast desert. Now back to normalcy, Nicolas resembled a malnourished vagabond without an ounce of bravado.
At that moment, someone descended from one of the nearby armored vehicles. Lin Yi squinted to get a better look and noticed that this person wore an advanced black Combat Suit he had never seen before. Strangely enough, there were no insignia or shoulder patches indicating their identity—could they not be military personnel? As this thought crossed Lin Yi's mind, he quickly dismissed it; where else would such a massive military force come from if not from Government Forces?
"Trouble! Show your identification!" Before Lin Yi could ponder further, the man in black had already approached them.
Lin Yi silently cursed himself for his carelessness. In his current situation, he had no identification on him, and in the chaos of fleeing, he hadn't considered this detail. Nicolas's face also changed; it seemed he was in the same predicament.
As the other party's expression darkened, Lin Yi quickly spoke up, "We left in a hurry and didn't bring any identification."
The man in black clearly disapproved of Lin Yi's explanation. He turned to signal someone in the armored vehicle, and soon four armed individuals dressed in black Combat Suits rushed over to surround Lin Yi and Nicolas.
"What do you want?" Nicolas's face was pale, looking as if he had just been pulled from water. He must have been unable to bear the feeling of being controlled, as his voice rose in volume.
Seeing Nicolas's state made Lin Yi feel a wave of guilt. He had always adhered to the principle of not provoking others unless provoked himself. But upon reflection, it was not only frustrating but also humiliating to be bullied so easily.
"Cooperate with the investigation. In times of crisis, we have an obligation to search suspicious individuals!" The leader of the black-clad men showed no concern for Nicolas's anger and spoke coldly.
"Who are you? On what grounds do you search us? Are we zombies or something? Have you ever seen a zombie that looks like a human?" Lin Yi couldn't let himself lose face in front of his companion and retorted without holding back.
The leader suddenly sneered, and in the next moment, he raised his large hand without warning and swung it toward Lin Yi's face!
Lin Yi's mental energy had been enveloping the area around him, so he noticed the man's movement immediately.
He was furious—truly furious. Hitting someone was one thing, but attempting to slap him without understanding the situation was a blatant insult! Silver Soul seemed to sense Lin Yi's emotions, trembling as the man's palm approached.
With a loud "smack!" that wasn't particularly crisp, the expression on the black-clad man's face turned to disbelief. How could this seemingly weak-looking Eastern man block his sudden slap? Moreover, Lin Yi was gripping his wrist with one hand and appeared to have plenty of strength left.
In the next moment, the black-clad man felt a piercing pain radiate from his wrist. A cracking sound echoed as if his bones were about to be crushed into dust.
The man in black was on the verge of crying out in agony, but he ultimately gritted his teeth and held it in. However, the beads of sweat rolling down his face indicated the intense pain he was enduring.
Everything happened in an instant. By the time the four men in black reacted, their leader had already been subdued by Lin Yi!
The sound of guns being cocked echoed around them as the four men aimed their weapons at Lin Yi and Nicolas's heads.
"I’m confident I can take this guy out before you pull the trigger!" Lin Yi gritted his teeth, having quickly assessed the situation. There were several buildings nearby, and as long as they could seize the initiative, escaping wouldn’t be too difficult.
The four men were clearly intimidated by Lin Yi, and after being grabbed by the wrist, their leader had completely lost the will to resist. He sensed the killing intent radiating from Lin Yi, a feeling that was overwhelmingly intense. The man in black wasn’t afraid of dying, but he couldn’t accept dying in such a humiliating manner!
Others began to notice Lin Yi’s actions, and many started to emerge from their armored vehicles to encircle them. Lin Yi couldn’t help but smirk; the more people there were around, the greater their chances of safely escaping.
"I’m not a bad person, but if you want to bully me, then I won’t be a good person either!" Lin Yi declared fiercely. In this world, it was survival of the fittest. Since his opponents couldn’t overpower him, what did it matter if he acted arrogantly? Those stronger than him treated lives as worthless and had no bottom line when it came to their arrogance.
"Let me go!" The words were almost forced out through clenched teeth; it was clear that he could barely endure the pain any longer.
"Can you guarantee you won’t act rashly?" Lin Yi knew that continuing this standoff wouldn’t benefit him. Offending such a powerful force would make his future difficult.
"I guarantee!" The man’s face grew increasingly pale; he had likely reached his limit.
"Hmph, do you think I’m three years old?" Lin Yi would never trust someone based solely on their word!
"I’m from the Golden Mercenary Corps; we always keep our promises!" The man felt deeply humiliated upon hearing Lin Yi’s skepticism.
Lin Yi's heart skipped a beat. A team with such equipment was actually just a Mercenary group? What kind of Mercenary could possess such power?
"Are you also Mercenaries?" Lin Yi asked instinctively.
The man in black clearly understood Lin Yi's question. His previously narrowed eyes suddenly widened as he looked at Lin Yi and said, "You are also Mercenaries?"
The same words carried the same meaning. Lin Yi's mind raced, trying to figure out which Mercenary faction could be so large. Aside from the Lone Wolf Mercenary Group, which he had subdued and claimed to be the third in the Greater Paris Defense Zone, he had not encountered any larger Mercenary groups.
"Since we are both part of the Mercenary Alliance, there's no need for us to continue this charade!" Lin Yi believed the man in black; there was no reason for him to deceive himself.
"I wonder which Mercenary group you belong to?" The man in black waved one hand, signaling those holding guns to lower them.
"Blood Envoy Mercenary Corps!" Lin Yi clearly stated the name of his Mercenary group.
"Blood Envoy?" The man in black rubbed his wrist while carefully recalling the name. However, from his frown, Lin Yi guessed that the other party probably looked down on his Mercenary group. A Mercenary faction capable of deploying large-scale armored vehicles was definitely not an ordinary force.
In the next moment, the man in black raised his left hand, where he wore something resembling a watch on his wrist. He quickly tapped a few times, and a three-dimensional projection screen appeared above his wrist. The man in black tapped a few times in mid-air, and the information on the screen changed rapidly.
Soon, a series of characters appeared on the screen. Lin Yi glanced casually and saw a row of large red letters: Number One, Golden Mercenary Corps! Lin Yi's eyelids twitched. Could it be that the Golden Mercenary Corps was indeed the legendary First Mercenary Corps?
