Lin Yi had initially intended to grab Nicolas's wings with his hand to prevent him from escaping, without using his mental power to suppress his movements. Unexpectedly, this unintentional action exposed Nicolas's weakness; once Lin Yi grasped the base of his wings, Nicolas instantly lost all his strength.
Although Lin Yi was unsure of the situation, seeing Nicolas suddenly collapse on the ground gave him some understanding.
"Why do you want to eat us humans?" Lin Yi shouted sternly, noticing that Nicolas was now completely defenseless.
Nicolas seemed still dazed, mumbling to himself, "I didn't... I have always kept my promise, I haven't done anything."
Lin Yi raised an eyebrow. Just moments ago, this person had boasted about being from the Holy Clan, and now he appeared as wilted as a frostbitten eggplant. Although Nicolas wasn't particularly strong in combat, if he were to fight Lin Yi desperately, the outcome would be uncertain.
"Please let me go! I'm just really hungry and I have no money! I don't even know what's going on. I haven't been out for over half a year, and now I can't even buy some blood!" Nicolas sounded increasingly aggrieved, making Lin Yi feel like he was the villain in this scenario.
"You’re a vampire, right? Is it true?" Lin Yi asked hesitantly upon hearing Nicolas mention wanting to drink blood. Although he had suspected this possibility, seeing a living vampire before him, crying no less, was something he found hard to accept.
Nicolas nodded but then shook his head. "You humans did call us vampires before, but such an ugly name doesn't suit our noble identity. We refer to ourselves as the Holy Clan."
"The Holy Clan? Then why do you still need to drink human blood?" Lin Yi scoffed, incredulous at how someone could commit such acts yet feel good about themselves.
"For us, drinking human blood is completely normal, just like how you eat the flesh of other animals. Do you stop hunting animals?" Nicolas slowly lifted his head, his eyes reflecting a sense of cold indifference as if it were a matter of course.
Those words felt eerily familiar to Lin Yi; not long ago, he had heard a "human" express similar sentiments. In this way, Nicolas could be seen as merely adhering to the law of the jungle—something that occurred in every corner of the world at every moment.
"Then you can leave," Lin Yi said as he relaxed his grip. It seemed he had only been bullying someone else and was not actually doing what he believed was a righteous act.
Nicolas twisted his body and moved his shoulders before asking, "Can you tell me why I can't use coins now? I was kicked out of the hospital earlier!"
Lin Yi looked at the gaunt man with the pointed chin and suddenly felt that he wasn't so detestable after all. Although he consumed blood, it didn't seem like such a big deal.
"Right now, Zombies are rampant outside, and the financial systems of various countries have suffered tremendous damage. So, there is now a virtual currency called Contribution Points that is universally accepted," Lin Yi said, curious about how this guy seemed so out of touch with current events.
"I see. I usually live alone, and I only came out because I ran out of stored blood. I didn't expect to be unable to buy any blood. I was starving and had to go to the blood bank," Nicolas replied, looking as if he had just realized something. Then he asked with a puzzled expression, "What is a Zombie?"
Lin Yi looked at him in disbelief and said, "It's a disgusting creature that emits a foul odor. They drink human blood and eat human flesh, turning people into mindless monsters like themselves..."
After a moment, Lin Yi finally explained the current situation in general terms, while Nicolas listened in shock, as if he were hearing a story.
"Will they bite me?" Nicolas shuddered at the thought of someone wanting to eat his flesh and drink his blood.
"Anything with blood and flesh will likely be eaten. They rely on blood and meat to sustain their activities, so they shouldn't be picky," Lin Yi replied calmly. He felt as if he were conversing with a friend. However, in this desolate place surrounded by ancient trees and sparse streetlights, the atmosphere felt somewhat eerie.
"I just heard you mention that you seem to have a lot of Contribution Points?" Nicolas suddenly changed the subject, looking at Lin Yi with an unsettling glint in his eyes.
Lin Yi felt as if he were being watched by a cobra when Nicolas fixed his gaze on him.
"What do you want? Are you planning to rob me?" Lin Yi shook the Silver Soul in his hand, making his intentions clear.
Nicolas quickly waved his hands, saying, "No, no! I just want to earn a living; I mean no harm."
"Earn a living?" Lin Yi's mind immediately conjured images of vampires drinking human blood, and those images slowly merged with the concept of Zombies. The realization that he was discussing matters with a vampire made him question his own sanity.
"Yes, I heard that you can only earn Contribution Points on a large scale by exterminating Zombies. I think it shouldn't be a problem for me to go kill some Zombies," Nicolas said, tapping his fingers together, producing a series of metallic clinks.
"Don't you think you're quite similar to them?"
"How could that be! Although we used to directly drink human blood a long time ago, after we signed the contract, we now obtain blood in a more friendly manner. Sometimes, when we can't get human blood, we resort to drinking the blood of other creatures. Of course, that kind of blood is hard to swallow; I tried it once and never wanted to again!" Nicolas's emotions flared up, as if recalling some unpleasant memories.
"Are you suggesting we go kill Zombies together?" Lin Yi had witnessed Nicolas's abilities and knew that with his strength, ordinary Zombies wouldn't stand a chance against him.
"Is that not allowed? I'm a Marquis-level fighter; although I'm just at the beginner stage, I know it's still quite impressive!" Nicolas boasted like a boy showing off his muscles, his face filled with pride, though his sharp and thin features gave off a rather sleazy impression.
"What are the different levels among you?" Lin Yi became interested upon hearing Nicolas's words. The classification of combat power was quite chaotic everywhere. Now that ordinary people's combat power classifications couldn't keep up with Lin Yi's own strength values, he wasn't sure which level he actually belonged to.
"There are five levels: Duke, Marquis, Earl, Viscount, and Baron. However, there's a significant difference in strength between each level. Based on my estimation, you should be upper-middle among the Marquis level!" Nicolas answered Lin Yi's question readily and even provided an approximate classification for Lin Yi's combat power.
"What abilities does each level have?" Lin Yi suddenly thought of Carlo. Although Carlo's overall combat power wasn't as strong as his current self, that ghostly agility had left a deep impression on Lin Yi.
"Depending on the different hereditary families, each has its own strengths. Invisibility, void manipulation, mind reading, precognition, steelification, and so on. We don't interact much nowadays; there might be others as well," Nicolas counted on his fingers and continued, "However, most of our combat powers are quite good, so other abilities tend to be overlooked!"
Invisibility? Lin Yi couldn't help but recall Ouyang Shasha, who always wore a red dress. A hazy memory surfaced of that night filled with intoxicating allure, but it felt somewhat unreal.
Seeing Lin Yi lost in thought, Nicolas called out a few times. Lin Yi snapped back to reality and asked, "Do you know someone named Benito?" Instead of mentioning Ouyang Shasha directly, he asked about Benito. If he could determine that Benito was also a vampire, then Ouyang Shasha would naturally be one too! However, just thinking about Ouyang Shasha possibly being a vampire and their past romantic encounters sent chills down his spine.
"Benito? I'm not sure; I rarely go out myself since there are too many bad people in this society!" Nicolas frowned in thought before quickly shaking his head.
Lin Yi couldn't help but chuckle to himself; it seemed that Marquis Nikola rarely ventured out, given how naive he appeared. However, with such strength, who would dare to provoke him?
"Never mind not knowing each other. Will you come with me now?" Lin Yi urgently needed more power, and he didn't mind having someone whose abilities were only slightly below his own accompany him.
"Yeah, I live alone in a cave right now, and it's incredibly boring. If it weren't for running out of food this time, I might have stayed in that cave for life!" Nicolas explained.
Lin Yi felt a surge of joy; having someone like him join was indeed a blessing. However, he was a bit concerned about whether this fellow would genuinely follow him, so he asked, "If you join our team, you can't betray us. Otherwise, the entire Mercenary Alliance will hunt you down!"
"We have a sense of contract; we won't betray unless absolutely necessary. But you humans seem to be quite good at going back on your word," Nicolas frowned, as Lin Yi's words had touched a nerve.
Lin Yi's face flushed with embarrassment, and he awkwardly chuckled a few times before saying, "Aren't you going home to tidy up and say goodbye to your friends?"
"There's really nothing in the cave except for a few clothes, and no one comes by the cliff to take anything. As for my friends, I wonder where they went. They usually hide among human society, but now it seems like they've all disappeared; I can't find them anywhere!"
"It must be because of the Zombie Crisis outbreak that they left!" Lin Yi speculated. Even vampires wouldn't dare confront those terrifying Zombie Armies directly.
Nicolas nodded; while he was simple-minded, it didn't mean he lacked intelligence.
"Alright then, you're my sidekick now!" Lin Yi said cheerfully. The thought of having a vampire by his side seemed like an interesting adventure.
