The tremors of the ground became increasingly pronounced, to the point where it felt as if the surrounding dilapidated buildings might topple from the rhythmic shaking. Lin Yi sensed more and more Zombies rushing towards him in a frenzy, and his complexion grew increasingly pale. Although he had just eliminated four Abominations, which were not particularly powerful, they had emitted a dangerous signal. Typically, a single Abomination could command a legion of Zombies, so the presence of four meant that their numbers had reached a concerning level.
If it were merely a matter of fighting a horde of mindless Zombies, Lin Yi and his team had numerous ways to eradicate them. However, now that the Zombies possessed intelligence akin to that of humans and were fiercely unyielding, it meant that eliminating these Zombies would come at a great cost!
"Boss, we've reached the Submarine!" The voice of Witerson II suddenly came through the earpiece, and Lin Yi felt a slight sense of relief.
"Try to see if you can break through this Zombie-formed barricade!" Lin Yi looked at the Zombie dam that had just been blasted by dozens of grenades; a massive gap had opened up, and hundreds of Zombies on the opposite bank could no longer replenish this huge breach.
At this moment, as long as the submarine surfaced and powered ahead, it should be able to make it through. Although Zombies were ferocious on land when they spotted humans, their combat effectiveness in water was negligible. This was likely one reason why Rome's submarine had managed to leave smoothly before. However, Lin Yi found it strange that they encountered such a large-scale Zombie blockade just as they were about to pass through.
A minute later, Lin Yi saw the reflection of light on the lake surface and noticed a long shadow appearing on the water. Meanwhile, the approaching Zombies were already very close!
"You all go ahead!" Lin Yi decided to stay behind on the shore, worried that a Giant Zombie might cause trouble. He would wait until the Submarine passed before joining them.
The others hesitated for a moment but then heard a female voice tinged with concern say, "You better not get into trouble; otherwise, you'll regret it!"
Lin Yi ran his fingers through his hair and smiled; it was Ying Sa's voice. Having someone care was a wonderful thing. Unintentionally, he thought of Li Qiweng. It had been a long time since they last met, yet he hadn’t thought about her in ages.
"Bang! Bang!" Two loud crashes echoed behind Lin Yi. He didn’t turn around but instead pushed off the ground with his toes and leaped into the air.
In the next moment, Lin Yi twisted his waist mid-air and landed on a partially collapsed wall.
"Roar!" The first Giant Zombie to arrive saw the slender figure before it swiftly evade its grasp and let out an enraged roar.
Lin Yi smirked slightly as he sprang into action; his previously hidden Silver Soul surged forth with a rush.
The Giant Zombie on the ground saw Lin Yi leap high into the air and unhesitatingly jumped towards him, attempting to engage in a direct confrontation.
However, the intelligence of the Giant Zombie was limited. Although it could jump two meters high, it ultimately failed to even touch Lin Yi's legs. In the next moment, the Zombie lost its strength and fell directly downwards, while Lin Yi, following the momentum of his descent, crashed down onto the Giant Zombie's head!
"Thud!" Lin Yi's dual blades sliced through the Giant Zombie's skull, cleaving its massive head into three pieces.
Thick, dark juice gushed out from the wound, splattering all over the Giant Zombie's forehead. Despite this, the Giant Zombie was remarkably resilient; it continued to struggle even after sustaining such damage.
At that moment, Lin Yi stood on the shoulders of the Zombie, while its hands reached out towards Lin Yi's legs in a desperate attempt to grab him. However, Lin Yi was unwilling to let go of such a great opportunity. He exerted force with his legs, causing his pant legs to bulge instantly, and the grasping claws of the Zombie failed to harm him in the slightest.
Seizing this brief moment, Lin Yi crossed his arms again. The "Silver Soul," which had already deeply embedded itself in the Zombie's skull, sliced sideways. The upper half of the Zombie's head was completely severed!
After its demise, the Zombie swayed a few times before collapsing to the ground, and Lin Yi jumped away just before it fell. At that moment, the ground shook violently, and many small stones began to roll around.
"How's it going? Haven't you charged through yet?" Lin Yi felt anxious; he had no confidence in dealing with the approaching Zombie Army.
"We're almost there; we've already made it through most of it!" It was Pachy's voice responding.
Before Lin Yi could ask further questions, several more Giant Zombies appeared one after another in the shadowy streets. They were panting heavily, their eyes scanning around as they tried to locate their trembling prey hiding in the corners.
This time, Lin Yi couldn't be bothered to engage directly; he simply drew his Laser Gun and shot at one of the Zombies' heads. His marksmanship had been improving over these days, likely thanks to his increasingly powerful Psychic Power.
With a soft "sizzle," Lin Yi heard the sound of a hole being burned through the Zombie's skull.
In the next moment, low growls echoed again. Lin Yi knew that his single-man Laser Gun didn't have enough power to kill a Giant Zombie outright; however, his psychic energy had already locked onto the wounded Zombie, and he wouldn't give up easily.
Lin Yi waited for the right moment and fired two more shots in quick succession. The forehead of that Zombie was practically blown open!
"Alright, the first one!" Lin Yi felt a surge of joy as he saw the first Zombie fall. However, he quickly composed himself and began shooting at the next Zombie that was rushing towards him.
"Zzz!" He fired three consecutive Laser Beams, and the second Zombie also collapsed!
"Three more to go!" Lin Yi squinted his eyes, his hands never pausing as he shot at a Zombie running in parallel with the others. After repeating this action three times, the three Zombies fell just under three meters away from him.
Suddenly, Lin Yi saw several nearby walls collapse with a thunderous roar, sending dust swirling into the air and covering the street in a haze. Although it was already dark, the pervasive smell of dust was still quite unpleasant.
Lin Yi held his breath under Consciousness, but in the next moment, he couldn't help but gasp at what his flashlight illuminated.
Rows upon rows of decaying heads appeared in Lin Yi's line of sight. These heads had recently rotted, and he could still discern their original genders from the remnants of flesh and blood. Regardless of how vibrant these heads might have been in life, they now all bore the same grotesque visage, covered in blackened rotten flesh and teeth exuding a strong stench. Many Zombies had hollow eye sockets or only half-bloodied eyeballs that glimmered with lifelessness. Even those eyeballs were devoured without hesitation by the Zombies; their madness had reached a desperate level.
"Roar!" The Zombies roared in unison upon seeing Lin Yi brazenly shining his flashlight at them!
The sound waves carried an invisible yet powerful force that swept toward Lin Yi, causing him to take several steps back under Consciousness.
Suddenly, it seemed as if the Zombies received some kind of command and began to roar in unison. In the next moment, they charged at Lin Yi like soldiers marching into battle.
"Lin Yi, retreat! They've already charged past!" In a critical moment, an excited voice from Pachy came through his earpiece.
Without hesitation, Lin Yi instantly turned and sprinted toward the nearby Submarine. Even when faced with the threat of Missiles last time, he hadn't run this fast. Perhaps in his mind, being blown to bits was far better than being devoured by Zombies until nothing remained!
Two seconds later, Lin Yi reached the riverbank. The Submarine had surfaced on the Water Surface. He quickly severed a tree branch and tossed it between himself and the Submarine. In the next moment, he stepped back a few paces and jumped onto the branch. A rope was thrown over from the fire dragon on the Submarine, and Lin Yi grabbed it to pull himself back aboard!
As soon as Lin Yi returned to the cabin, the Submarine roared to life and sped forward!
But three minutes later, they witnessed a scene that instantly filled them with a sense of despair with nowhere to escape.
Ahead, a barricade made entirely of Zombies had appeared once again across the river, and this time it towered over the water's surface by at least a person's height. This meant that even if the Submarine surfaced to advance, there would be no way forward!
What chilled everyone even more was that both banks were now crowded with Zombies, as if they knew Lin Yi and the others would arrive at this spot, quietly waiting for them to take the bait.
At this moment, rushing forward meant certain death, but not rushing forward also led to a slow demise!
"What should we do?" Everyone looked at Lin Yi; he was their only hope here!
"Let's wait for rescue on the Submarine. Their combat ability in the water is weak; we can still handle it!" Lin Yi glanced at the frenzied Zombies on both banks, their teeth bared and howling, and he too lost any intention of fighting desperately.
Soon, Lin Yi realized he had been too naive. The moment the Submarine came to a halt, those Zombies standing on the shore suddenly began throwing long, slender objects. Lin Yi knew they were tree trunks! The Zombies were trying to use the trunks to cross over!
"Fire!" As soon as the first Zombie jumped onto a tree trunk, Lin Yi unhesitatingly issued the command to shoot!
Dozens of Laser Beams shot towards both banks, but even that seemed like a drop in the bucket. The dense horde of Zombies fearlessly leaped onto the tree trunks; Lin Yi and his team's Laser Beams merely stirred up ripples among the Zombie crowd.
The roars of the Zombies sounded like a death knell, sending chills deep into everyone's bones; they had nowhere left to run.
