The night was as dark as ink, and a small orange glow flickered atop the blood-red wax. A gentle, chilling breeze swept by, causing the light to flicker several times, as if it might extinguish at any moment. Yet, just when it seemed on the verge of going out, the glow reignited, shining even brighter than before.
"Are you from Lion City?" Lin Yi was momentarily stunned, his mind buzzing. In a place teeming with Zombies, he had actually heard an accent from Lion City!
"You guessed only the beginning; as punishment, you have to fight me!" As the frail figure spoke, the coarse cloth wrapping around them fluttered without wind, allowing Lin Yi to catch a glimpse of half of the person's face hidden beneath the fabric.
The coarse cloth concealed a weathered, shriveled face that resembled the bark of an extremely parched old tree. Lin Yi breathed a sigh of relief; at least he was dealing with a person and not a Zombie.
"Alright!" Lin Yi replied, drawing out his Silver Soul from behind his back. The presence of this person felt formidable.
In the next moment, a dark iron rod suddenly appeared in the stranger's hand, resembling those wielded by Giant Zombies but much larger.
A sense of dread washed over Lin Yi; he recognized that iron rod all too well. Before he could even ask about it, the figure transformed into a blur and shot toward him.
With no other choice, Lin Yi focused and raised his blade to meet the challenge. At their level of combat, mere eyesight could no longer suffice; they had to rely on their heightened senses since both their speeds had reached a terrifying limit.
"Swish!" Lin Yi felt a strong gust against his cheek as the iron rod swung toward him. He instinctively crossed his dual blades to defend but found himself striking nothing!
A phantom! Lin Yi's heart raced in fear; how could he be deceived by an illusion with his reaction speed?
At that moment, he felt a sharp pain in his waist—the opponent's real strike was aimed directly at him! He knew there was no time to dodge and had no choice but to twist his body instantly, collapsing flat onto the ground.
Though somewhat clumsy, he managed to evade the blow. However, his opponent was relentless; in the next instant, they swung the Iron Rod down toward Lin Yi's abdomen with tremendous force.
Sensing imminent danger, Lin Yi plunged both blades into the ground and propelled himself away with all his strength.
"Boom!" The ground where Lin Yi had just been lying cracked open as a metal rod came crashing down, creating a deep pit twenty centimeters deep in the reinforced concrete.
Lin Yi couldn't help but click his tongue in surprise, but the opponent was like a fighting machine; one strike missed, and another followed immediately! Lin Yi wasn't fully prepared and could only hastily respond.
A sharp, jarring sound of metal clashing echoed as Lin Yi felt a tremendous force surge through his arm, causing his hands to tremble slightly from the impact of holding the knife.
The opponent's strength was astonishingly powerful. Before Lin Yi could regain his composure, the iron rod transformed into a blur, aiming straight for his head!
"Fight for your life!" Lin Yi shouted, swinging his knife fiercely at the incoming rod. If it came down to a direct clash between the knife and the iron rod, it was clear that the rod had the advantage. However, the opponent's speed was too fast, and Lin Yi struggled to find any openings in their defense.
Simply dodging wouldn't solve the problem. Besides his impressive speed and strength, Lin Yi's psychic power was also on the rise, but at that moment, it seemed useless.
He was currently using part of his Psychic Power to sense movements around him, with enough remaining to do something. Lin Yi initially considered using his Psychic Power on himself; if he could fly, he would have a significant advantage in this duel.
Unfortunately, there was a restriction on using Psychic Power on himself. No matter how hard Lin Yi tried, he simply couldn't take off. According to Wu Hao's theory, this was a limitation imposed by the Creator on those with abilities or perhaps his psychic power wasn't strong enough yet!
But there was no time to dwell on that now. Under the relentless strikes of the opponent's iron rod, Lin Yi could only keep retreating. At that moment, his only thought was that if his Psychic Power could surge dramatically, perhaps he could take flight!
Miracles were ultimately just fantasies; Lin Yi's hands were nearly slipping off the knife handle! The opponent's attacks came like clockwork—one strike after another without pause.
As the opponent closed in several times, Lin Yi initially didn't notice but gradually realized that there was no life in them at all. He increasingly felt as though he were battling a corpse—a powerful corpse—and that was terrifying! In this desolate place, fighting against a lifeless being left everyone uncertain about what bizarre event might occur next.
There could be no more hesitation. Lin Yi's psychic energy erupted like a tidal wave. At that moment, under the influence of Lin Yi's Psychic Power, the iron rod slowed down slightly; however, Lin Yi himself was not faring well either. The fierce wind generated by the rod was highly destructive, and as his Psychic Power continued to drain away in his mind, the impact of the rod kept affecting him.
After several intense clashes, Lin Yi's face had turned pale. Fortunately, his arms were not as sore as before, so he had no choice but to withdraw nearly half of his psychic energy to continue the melee with his opponent.
After repeating this for a few minutes, Lin Yi dared not continue. Although he had not seen his opponent's true face, he had a vague sense of foreboding in his heart.
However, Lin Yi was pleased to feel that after several frenzied battles using Psychic Power, its intensity seemed to have increased slightly. In the next moment, he unleashed all of his Psychic Power without reservation, abandoning his previous strategy of retreating while fighting. His right hand erupted to counter the iron rod swung by his opponent, while his left hand wielded a knife aimed directly at the opponent's heart!
With a loud bang, Lin Yi felt as if the bones in his right hand had shattered, but the next moment left him utterly astonished!
His opponent did not evade; Lin Yi's knife pierced straight through the opponent's heart without any obstruction!
Lin Yi was stunned, and just then, the opponent suddenly slid back a few steps. Lin Yi stood there holding Silver Soul, completely still.
At that moment, an even stranger scene unfolded. In Lin Yi's perception, there was not a trace of blood on Silver Soul in his left hand, as if the earlier events had been nothing but an illusion!
Lin Yi licked his cracked lips. He wanted to say something but ended up asking, "Are you okay?"
"Just fine; I only need to eat one person!" the opponent replied casually, as if they were two old friends having a casual conversation.
Eat people? This guy actually eats people! Lin Yi felt a wave of confusion wash over him. If this guy eats people, then is he still human? No, even if someone who eats people is human, they are certainly not a good person!
Suddenly, a possibility emerged in Lin Yi's mind. Given the current situation and the fact that this person recognized him and possessed such formidable combat power, there was only one possibility! Although Lin Yi did not want to believe it, it was the only explanation!
"You are Zhao Pei, aren't you? You are him! How can you talk? How did you become like this? Are you even human or are you a Zombie?" Lin Yi confirmed his answer and bombarded his friend with a series of questions. For someone who had been his best friend for over twenty years, he now felt utterly helpless.
"Yes and no. Why bother getting tangled up in these things? If I were, would you not kill me? You and I are on different paths now; we can only become rivals in the end!" The voice of the other party sounded like that of an old man on the verge of death, filled with endless sorrow. Perhaps in this brief moment, he had already experienced too many extraordinary things.
"Have you managed to rid yourself of the corpse poison? Can you return to your original self?" Since the other party had already admitted it, Lin Yi no longer cared about his cannibalistic tendencies!
"Hahaha, you're still so emotional. Even if I returned to my original self, what difference would it make? I am no longer human!"
The words struck Lin Yi like a bucket of cold water, extinguishing his last glimmer of hope. He knew that those infected with the Zombie Virus could never return; not only had their flesh rotted away, but even their internal organs had turned into a pile of blackened decay. In such a situation, even a miracle would likely not restore them to human form.
"But you are different from those Zombies!" Lin Yi seemed to grasp at the last straw, unwilling to accept that Zhao Pei could only exist as a walking corpse from now on.
"Since I regained Consciousness, I've been constantly consuming humans, devouring them. And then I realized I was becoming stronger, while the rotten flesh on my body gradually fell away, replaced by new tender flesh. It's just a pity that this flesh is like withered leaves—lacking any luster. But isn't this also a form of progress? So I continued to eat human flesh!
Honestly, human flesh isn't that great—sour and tough to chew. But I know I have to eat; I need to survive, even in this current state. By the time I last saw you, I was already quite powerful, and those ordinary Zombies were under my control.
It felt good—powerful—in a way that being a lab technician never did. After that, I began to eat people systematically; of course, I chose the tender flesh of infants because it truly is a delicacy." Zhao Pei spoke as if it were the simplest thing in the world, his voice even betraying a sense of enjoyment.
"What you're doing is simply disgusting!" Lin Yi erupted in anger.
"Disgusting? It’s certainly much better than what I have become!" Zhao Pei turned his head slightly, his voice tinged with self-mockery.
