At the moment the box hit the ground, Lin Yi and the others finally felt their hearts settle. Lin Yi's idea was to have everyone hide inside a box typically used for transporting goods, pretending to be cargo as they descended. To achieve this, Lin Yi spent fifty thousand Contribution Points to equip all the boxes with thrusters and conducted precise Satellite positioning, ensuring that every box landed perfectly in Roman Square.
Theoretically, Lin Yi's plan was quite reliable; after all, landing in the center of Rome meant that even if the Undead Bird wanted to fly in, it would first have to get past Rome's air defense system. However, even the most advanced technology has its vulnerabilities. If something went wrong with the thrusters mid-flight, it could lead to serious Trouble. The boxes might end up blown directly into a horde of Zombies, and at that point, even Lin Yi wouldn't be confident about escaping.
Naturally, they couldn't fully rely on Rome's air defense system. If too many Undead Birds appeared and the defense network couldn't eliminate them all, a few that slipped through could spell disaster for Lin Yi and his group.
This was a life-risking gamble, and only Lin Yi and his companions truly understood the dangers involved.
With a thud, the box enveloping Lin Yi and his companions automatically opened; it had been specially designed for this purpose.
"Hands up!" As soon as their box opened, a loud shout rang out from outside.
Lin Yi saw several people pointing guns at them with grim expressions. He couldn't help but smile wryly. To keep their operation confidential, aside from those in Paris who knew the details, Rome was only aware that someone was coming along with the transport plane; they had no idea that Lin Yi and his team had concealed themselves inside boxes to descend with the supplies.
Augustus was aware of some details and quickly stopped the actions of his staff. He had always been curious about who was coming from Paris but had not seen anyone until now; he was beginning to understand the truth.
Seeing someone intervene, Lin Yi immediately took out his identification and handed it to Augustus.
"Mr. Lin is here to find someone?" Augustus asked after reviewing the materials Lin Yi provided. He was curious whether these people were unaware that entering or exiting Rome was currently extremely difficult.
"Yes, I have a few friends here; I'm here to pick them up!" Lin Yi replied with a broad smile. He felt an inexplicable sense of familiarity with this elderly man before him.
"Are you aware of the situation here?" Augustus asked again, his deeply set eyes appearing slightly less sunken as he focused his attention.
Lin Yi nodded and said, "It's precisely because I know about the situation here that I came."
Augustus stared at Lin Yi for a few seconds before speaking again: "I wonder what supplies Mr. Lin has brought this time?" The fighting in the distance grew increasingly intense, making Augustus more reliant on this batch of supplies.
"This time we only transported one item!" Since they were on the transport plane, the department responsible for supply support didn't hide anything from them.
"Just one?" Augustus was taken aback. His mind raced as he wondered what kind of item could be so significant!
"Yes, the one sent to Rome from Paris is an automated munitions factory!" Lin Yi stated directly without any hesitation.
"A munitions factory!" Augustus truly lost his composure this time. He understood the value of a munitions factory, even if it was just a model. Rome had no place for weapon production; they had been relying on depleting their stockpiles and international aid. But now that there was a factory, they could produce weapons in large quantities using the raw materials already available in Rome! Although ordinary weapons had minimal impact on giant Sea Beasts, they could pose a significant threat to most common Corpseification marine creatures and Zombies.
Teaching someone to fish is better than giving them fish. By providing Rome with an automated munitions factory, it was like gifting them a massive arsenal. Rome lacked the materials for manufacturing ordinary weapons; what they needed was a complete military production system.
"Captain Lin, we need to focus on the main issue!" Ouyang Shasha seemed to have some prejudice against Augustus and completely ignored his excitement.
Lin Yi tapped his head and said to Augustus, "Sorry, we are indeed eager to find our friends. May I ask how you prefer to be addressed? We might need your assistance."
"I am Augustus, a cleric from Saint Mary Church." Augustus slightly bowed in gratitude towards Lin Yi and then called over a staff member. "Take these individuals to the Defense Center; they require our help."
With that, Augustus indicated that he needed to oversee the unloading of the machinery. Lin Yi and his team followed the staff member into a vehicle heading to the Defense Center.
The Defense Center was originally the city hall and was not far away. Ouyang Shasha only knew that Aoling Er and her group were trapped there, but since the Sea Beasts and Zombies had surrounded the city, she had lost contact with them and only knew they were indeed stuck.
The personnel in charge at the Defense Center were very welcoming upon learning that Lin Yi's group was delivering supplies, and they readily agreed to Lin Yi's requests.
Every able-bodied person in Rome was assigned heavy tasks, so Aoling Er's group couldn't be idle either. After carefully checking through the population records system, the staff member looked up with an awkward expression and said, "They are in the Western Defense Zone."
"Oh? Can you take us there?" Lin Yi found the staff member's gaze somewhat strange, but he didn't have time to dwell on it.
"No problem, but we can't leave our posts here; this gentleman will take you instead!" The personnel pointed at the frail man who had brought Lin Yi over.
Upon hearing this, the frail man's expression changed, and after what seemed like a significant internal struggle, he finally said, "Alright!"
Jerry noticed the frail man's demeanor and whispered to Lin Yi, "There’s probably something off here!"
Lin Yi gestured for Jerry to hold his tongue; he wasn't blind and could see there was something amiss. However, they were an elite team, so even if there were dangers ahead, there was no need to worry excessively.
Without delay, those who knew the location quickly drove to the Western Defense Zone. Even before reaching the Western Defense Zone, the booming sounds of artillery and the roars of Sea Beasts came crashing in waves, making it clear that it was already a hellish battlefield.
The vehicle soon arrived beneath the defensive wall. As Lin Yi stepped out, a wave of oppressive force hit him like a tidal wave. Standing on the ground, Lin Yi felt as small as an ant compared to the towering wall above. At that moment, chaos reigned above as people rushed towards the Fire Sea, with many medical personnel in white coats tending to injured soldiers.
Lin Yi found it strange; those who fought against Zombies would likely turn into corpses before they could be rescued. So why were they still being carried down from the city wall?
"Are we going up?" Tony was already itching to go; his woman was up there, and he couldn't help but feel anxious!
They didn't know their exact location yet, but there were other officials in the west who could help narrow it down.
A frail man had already run into a makeshift tent beneath the wall, and Lin Yi quickly followed him inside.
Inside the tent was an elderly Drunken-Nose Old Man, wielding a machete and hacking at thin air.
As Lin Yi and the frail man entered, they stated their purpose. Upon hearing this, Rhinophyma's bleary eyes suddenly widened: "Came here looking for a woman?"
"No, three friends!" Lin Yi replied awkwardly.
"Names!"
"Aoling Er, Yellow Sea, and Lulu!"
After hearing this, the Drunken-Nose Old Man didn’t say much and quickly pulled up information on his computer. A minute later, he glanced at Lin Yi and said, "You can go up the stairs from here directly to the top of the wall. Then turn right and walk straight until you see a white tent; that's where they are!"
Upon hearing this, Tony dashed out immediately. Lin Yi hurriedly thanked him and followed suit. They had already received permission from the Defense Center, so no one stopped them.
In just a few breaths, Lin Yi ascended nearly thirty meters high to the top of the wall.
"Whoa!" Just as Lin Yi steadied himself, a massive shadow lunged at him with terrifying speed. Instinctively, Lin Yi leaped into action; in the next moment, his Silver Soul unsheathed from his back and met that enormous shadow head-on.
"Swish!" The sound of a blade slicing through flesh echoed as Lin Yi finally looked up to see a shadow. It was a slippery tentacle!
Once again, it was the Giant Squid! Lin Yi's anger flared up instantly; he despised this creature!
Ignoring the overwhelming stench, Lin Yi drew another Silver Soul and swung it at the decaying tentacle of the Giant Squid, which had yet to retract!
The Giant Squid, infected by the Zombie Virus, was oblivious to pain. Although Lin Yi's first strike with Silver Soul buried itself to the hilt, the tentacle showed no sign of feeling anything.
With the next strike, the cold light of his blade sliced through, and that tentacle, as thick as a water barrel, was severed by Lin Yi in one clean cut.
Dark liquid sprayed from the wound, and Lin Yi could clearly see countless microorganisms writhing within. Even though he had cut off part of the tentacle, it continued to thrash desperately.
Lin Yi had no intention of holding back; his mental energy surged forth as he wielded both Silver Souls like blooming flowers of steel.
"Shh shh shh!" The tentacles resting on the city wall were instantly shredded into mincemeat by Lin Yi's rapid strikes.
At that moment, it seemed the Giant Squid realized that one of its tentacles had been mostly severed. A new tentacle shot toward Lin Yi's position like a black python in the jungle.
