Bai, who had been silent all along, lifted his head to glance at Lin Yi. A flicker of displeasure crossed his eyes, and his lips parted as if he were about to say something, but in the end, he chose silence. Lin Yi, of course, did not notice Bai's unusual demeanor; his mind was completely occupied with thoughts of Li Qiweng.
"How are you going to get back now? The situation here isn't optimistic; regular navigation has already stopped," Pachy reminded Lin Yi. At this moment, the Mercenary group was already feeling a bit disheartened, and it would be too disappointing if he really abandoned everyone.
Lin Yi paused for a moment and then noticed that both of the people in front of him had somber expressions. It finally registered in his mind that he was the Captain of the Blood Envoy Mercenary Corps, and abandoning his teammates was simply irresponsible. Especially now, with several members of his team missing, it was crucial to have someone to take charge.
"Ha ha, I guess I was too anxious. As Captain, I really should be more responsible," Lin Yi said with a somewhat embarrassed smile. While Li Qiweng's situation was indeed important, returning to Lion City was also quite difficult at the moment, so he had no choice but to set it aside for now.
"Well then, you guys rest. I'll go check on the situation!" Lin Yi said when he saw that the two were ignoring him and decided to change the subject.
At that moment, someone suddenly walked in through the door. With a bouncing ponytail and a bright smile, she radiated youthful energy. Lin Yi looked at the still somewhat unfamiliar figure and felt a warm sense of sunshine in his heart.
"Are you all here to welcome me?" Ying Sa exclaimed as she entered and spotted three big men standing in different corners of the hall, their expressions somewhat strange.
Lin Yi scratched the back of his head and replied, "I was just about to head out; they were tired from last night and are getting some rest."
Pachy and Bai nodded at Ying Sa before heading upstairs; they were indeed exhausted.
Ying Sa's eyes widened as she looked at Lin Yi, as if she had discovered something amusing. Lin Yi wiped his face and looked at her in confusion. "What's up? Am I handsome?"
"Pfft!" Ying Sa couldn't help but laugh out loud before making a gagging motion, pointing at Lin Yi as if he were overly narcissistic.
"You didn't come here just to giggle, did you?" The gloom in Lin Yi's heart lightened considerably with Ying Sa's arrival; he felt less burdened.
Leaning against the doorframe, Ying Sa brushed her bangs aside and let out a light sigh. "I came to play with you! There are no combat missions today; it's pretty boring being alone."
Lin Yi smiled back. Ying Sa was essentially still a child; it was just that she had been caught up in constant battles. He had always viewed everyone as warriors fighting against Zombies. Even with someone like David, he often didn't see him as a child in most situations.
"What should we do for fun?" Lin Yi glanced nervously over his shoulder. If the other members of the Mercenary group found out he was out having fun, they would probably beat him up.
"Just wandering around is fine; I've been to many places in Paris already," Ying Sa replied with a gentle smile, her feminine charm evident.
Lin Yi looked at the old clock hanging on the wall; it was exactly ten in the morning. He turned to Ying Sa and said, "Let's check out the place where I used to live. It might help us find some clues."
Ying Sa shot him a glance but said nothing. Instead, she reached out and pulled Lin Yi out of the room.
The streets were somewhat desolate. This season should be peak tourist time in Paris, yet it felt much quieter. The pedestrians still dressed fashionably, but their forced smiles revealed that the Zombie Crisis had brought considerable suffering to ordinary people.
As Lin Yi and Ying Sa walked along the street, they chatted casually, though more often than not, they kicked at the scattered pebbles on the ground. Lin Yi wondered if he was feeling suppressed; he found himself lacking enthusiasm in front of such beauty. Ying Sa, being a simple-minded person, noticed Lin Yi's silence but didn't think much of it and kept quiet herself.
The city tram led directly to their previous rental place, which was now devoid of police presence. The crowd affected by last night's disaster still lingered there. Although this place held painful memories for them, there were hardly any locations left within the Greater Paris Defense Zone for them to be relocated. To compensate these innocent victims, the authorities quickly set up temporary shelters for them, which were much better organized than before; what used to be a chaotic slum now appeared significantly cleaner.
Lin Yi thought that the French had never shown such efficiency before; it seemed that in the face of great disaster, everything had to be viewed differently. However, he soon felt frustrated as he could no longer find any trace of where they had lived before, leaving him without any leads from last night.
"What now? It's too clean here!" Lin Yi shrugged helplessly at Ying Sa. He didn't want to be just a fighting machine; he wanted to engage his mind as well.
"Let's walk further inside," Ying Sa suggested, pointing toward a deeper part of the residential area where an asphalt road led into a dense forest.
Lin Yi looked at Ying Sa with a strange expression but nodded nonetheless. A beautiful girl inviting him to a secluded area was something no normal man would refuse.
Although it was already late spring, the trees in the forest were not very lush yet; the narrow asphalt road was covered with many dry yellow sycamore leaves. Occasionally, a gentle breeze would stir the leaves, creating a soft rustling sound that brushed against his heart like a lover's tease. The two remained mostly silent as they walked, and before they knew it, they had gradually reached the edge of the forest. The sounds of the crowd they could hear earlier had completely faded away.
Suddenly, Lin Yi's heart skipped a beat. It was too quiet here—uncomfortably quiet! The tension that had been building over recent days surged back into his mind; this place felt abnormal!
Lin Yi closed his eyes, instantly spreading his mental energy. He had just been casually wandering around with Ying Sa, so he hadn’t paid much attention to his surroundings.
The moment Lin Yi's mental perception scattered, his previously calm demeanor turned pale.
“What…” Ying Sa noticed Lin Yi’s sudden change in expression and was about to ask what was wrong. But at that moment, she saw Lin Yi’s face filled with terror as he reached out his arm toward her waist, interrupting her words.
A tremendous force gripped Ying Sa’s waist painfully, and before she could even gasp, her entire body was pressed tightly against Lin Yi.
The man’s rough breathing sounded like a low, howling wind that invaded Ying Sa's ears. She felt her head start to buzz, her heart racing faster, and she couldn’t help but feel her face flush with heat.
“Danger!” Before Ying Sa could remain in confusion any longer, Lin Yi's voice rang in her ears.
At that moment, she heard a piercing shriek, and her face paled. It was the sound of a rocket launcher being fired.
“Hold on tight!” Lin Yi shouted. Ying Sa felt Lin Yi’s previously soft body suddenly turn rigid as if it had become a piece of dry wood.
In the next instant, Lin Yi shot forward like a fighter jet propelled into the air, launching himself several dozen meters ahead.
“Boom!”
“Boom!”
Two loud explosions erupted not far from Lin Yi, and the massive shockwave caused the surrounding trees to shake violently as if swept by a hurricane. The newly grown leaves were shredded into fragments by the force, while the dry yellow leaves on the ground twisted wildly in the gusts. Two enormous craters appeared on the once pristine asphalt road, and the acrid smell of gunpowder quickly filled the air.
Lin Yi couldn’t stop; he sensed that around thirty people were closing in on him. Although his speed was astonishing, carrying Ying Sa naturally slowed him down considerably. Just as he dodged the rocket attack, those thirty individuals had already formed a tight encirclement around him.
"Bang! Bang!"
The echoes of the explosions had not yet faded when the sound of gunfire erupted around Lin Yi. He cursed himself for being careless, never expecting to be caught in such an unexpected disaster. The only people he had offended were the Darknight Vampires, and he thought they would no longer come after him. But now, it seemed they were more relentless than ever.
"Hmph, the old one got away, but can’t I deal with you lot?" Lin Yi said as he grabbed Ying Sa with one arm and picked up a piece of dry wood from the ground with the other, charging towards the nearest enemy.
Although Lin Yi's speed had decreased significantly, he was still not someone an ordinary person could contend with. In an instant, he transformed into a blur, reaching the closest enemy in the blink of an eye. Since they aimed to encircle him, they were not too far apart.
With a swift motion, taking advantage of his opponent's momentary shock, Lin Yi drove the dry wood into the man's throat. The impact was powerful; it pierced through the Camouflage Uniform of the Masked Man as easily as a knife cutting through tofu.
Blood gushed from the Masked Man's mouth as he fell to his knees, completely lifeless.
At that moment, two other Camouflage Uniformed men nearby finally reacted and raised their guns to shoot at Lin Yi. Although confident, Lin Yi did not dare to face bullets with his flesh and blood.
With a "thud," Lin Yi yanked the dry wood from the Masked Man's throat and hurled it at one of the Camouflage Uniformed men. He then half-knelt on the ground and picked up the Masked Man's rifle.
The dry wood struck with tremendous force, knocking the gun from one man's hands just as Lin Yi seized a weapon for himself.
"Bang! Bang!" shouted another Camouflage Uniformed man as he fired a volley in Lin Yi's direction. At that moment, Lin Yi was still half-kneeling on the ground, staring down the barrel of death!
