If you want to find the person you're looking for, please arrive at the Reiz Hotel before 1 AM tonight. Lin Yi stared at the elegant cursive writing on the white paper, a flurry of thoughts flashing through his mind.
"The person I want to find?" Lin Yi murmured to himself. Suddenly, a light bulb went off in his head—wasn't the person he wanted to find the very one he had been searching for, Li Qiweng? The moment this possibility crossed his mind, he felt a surge of joy. Although he firmly believed that Li Qiweng was still alive, the lack of news about her for so long had made it hard for him to keep convincing himself; it was merely self-deception. Now that someone had information about Li Qiweng, it was undoubtedly great news.
Due to the crowd around him, Lin Yi hesitated to use his supernatural abilities casually and instead ran straight to the dormitory area. By this time, most people were gathered at the dorm entrance, all wearing heavy expressions.
"Everyone, why does it look like you're all unhappy?" Lin Yi said with a beaming smile, as if Li Qiweng had already been found.
Seeing Lin Yi's smile, the others felt awkward; they were still unaware of what was happening. At that moment, Wu Hao grinned widely and clapped his hands. "Looks like our Captain Lin has news about our Mrs. Lin!"
Upon hearing Wu Hao's explanation, everyone finally relaxed and smiled. For days, they had been exterminating zombies while helping Lin Yi gather medical funds and trying to gather information about Li Qiweng from various factions, but they had received no news. Now that Lin Yi had just awakened and already had news about Li Qiweng, they naturally felt genuinely happy.
"What exactly is going on?" Pachy frowned. Out of professional habit, he didn't believe that Lin Yi could easily obtain information about Li Qiweng just by wandering around outside. He had been in contact with Mr. Lee of Lion City before, but even Mr. Lee only confirmed that Li Qiweng was alive; he didn't know where she was.
Lin Yi glanced at everyone and handed over the note. The members of the Mercenary Corps passed it around one by one, their faces revealing expressions of understanding. However, soon someone questioned the accuracy of this news—it was none other than the willful and headstrong Jiao Jiao.
"Boss, you might not know this, but during your coma, Jiao Jiao led us in gathering intelligence on the factions in the Paris area. That message mentioning Reiz Hotel comes from reliable sources; it's a gathering point for some organization in the Underworld," Ika explained to Lin Yi with a smile.
After hearing Ika's explanation, Lin Yi furrowed his brow. The only people he had offended since waking up were Bald Man and his gang. If everything happening now was orchestrated by their faction—even knowing that he was looking for someone—then even if it meant facing a mountain of knives or a sea of fire, Lin Yi felt compelled to go.
"You tell me where it is; I'm going right now!" Lin Yi said after a brief moment of contemplation.
"Let's go together; they have quite a background! It's too dangerous for you to go alone!" Witerson II squeezed in front of Lin Yi with a sincere expression.
Hearing Witerson II's words, everyone else also expressed their desire to join; since its inception, the Blood Envoy Mercenary Corps had always acted collectively. Lin Yi raised his hand to signal everyone to quiet down before speaking:
"This is my personal matter; I don't want to trouble everyone further. I'll handle this myself." He waved his hand dismissively; he knew that this mission could be dangerous and didn't want his teammates risking themselves for him—they had already done enough.
"Captain, it's your wife we're talking about! She's also our Vice Captain!" Tony said, feeling guilty as he realized he couldn't distance himself from this matter. Despite being injured, he still hoped to accompany Lin Yi.
"I appreciate everyone's good intentions. I'll compromise: Woods can drive me to the entrance; everyone else should rest well," Lin Yi said firmly and disregarded their objections as he slung Silver Soul over his back and left with Woods.
Pachy held considerable sway within the Mercenary Corps; understanding Lin Yi's current capabilities and after some thought, he supported Lin Yi's decision. With Pachy's encouragement and assurance, others also refrained from insisting on their opinions. Seeing the flames outside growing larger, they each returned to their rooms to rest.
In the darkness of the night, a minibus sped along the road. Due to the Zombie Crisis, there were far fewer pedestrians at night compared to the bustling days, making Paris City eerily quiet. In the distance, faintly, one could hear the roars of the lost echoing from not far away.
Lin Yi glanced at the time displayed inside the vehicle; there was still over an hour until midnight. Although it was late, Lin Yi felt no drowsiness. Instead, he hoped for some good news.
It was unclear how long they had been driving, but Lin Yi sensed that the surroundings were growing increasingly dark, until finally, for several minutes, he could see no light at all. Just as anxiety began to creep into his heart, the bus suddenly slammed to a stop.
Looking up, he was met with a five-story building that exuded a strong classical architectural style from the Louis Dynasty. The entrance featured a marble path leading directly to the grand hall, flanked by symmetrical stone pillars. Dim streetlights cast a warm yellow glow on the path. At the end of the road stood a massive and imposing gate, where a vague shadow lingered. The figure stood firm like a mountain, as if it had been rooted in that spot for millennia without moving.
Lin Yi felt a twinge of fear in his heart, but after patting Woods on the shoulder, he stepped down alone. Trying to appear calm like an ordinary person, he approached the shadow step by step. His keen senses warned him of terrifying dark forces lurking nearby; any sudden movement could provoke a dreadful attack.
"Mr. Lin has arrived half an hour early!" The shadow's voice echoed as if it came from deep within a cavern—distant yet penetrating.
Lin Yi smiled slightly, attempting to convey friendliness, but faced with the indistinct figure before him, he struggled to express his emotions.
"Being late is never good," Lin Yi quickened his pace, feeling a chill in the air.
As he drew closer to the shadow, he realized it was a young European man, slightly taller than Lin Yi. Upon seeing him, the young man respectfully gestured for Lin Yi to enter and led him through the grand door.
Expecting a lavish hall inside, Lin Yi was instead struck by an overwhelming sense of emptiness as he stepped in. The lighting was extremely dim; only a few candles flickered atop a long table in the center. The only person visible was an elderly man with white hair sitting at the end of the table, bent over and reading near one of the candles. Under normal circumstances, this scene might have seemed warm; however, it now appeared exceptionally eerie.
In that moment of distraction for Lin Yi, the young man who had led him inside vanished, and the heavy door behind him closed shut. Suddenly, the entire world became profoundly silent—so quiet it felt as if they were standing in outer space.
"Sit!" The white-haired elder pointed to the only black chair opposite him.
Lin Yi did not move; he disliked being treated with arrogance.
"Indeed, it's been quite some time since anyone dared to disregard us so openly!" The elder did not seem angry but continued to focus on his book without looking up at Lin Yi.
"Tell me what you know; I will repay you handsomely in due time!" At that moment, all Lin Yi wanted was information about Li Qiweng; nothing else mattered to him.
"No need for that; I called you here to demand an explanation!" The elder set his book aside and leaned back slightly as if tired from maintaining his position for too long.
"What explanation?" Lin Yi warily scanned his surroundings for an escape route.
"You have broken our centuries-old rules, which are the conventions of our Underworld. We survive by these rules, and by breaking them, you challenge our right to exist. Therefore, we need an explanation from you." The old man lifted his eyelids slightly before letting them droop again.
"What if I refuse to explain?" Lin Yi's temper flared; he despised being questioned.
"The rules of the Underworld dictate that you must stay!" The old man said this with ease.
Lin Yi scoffed derisively, "Old man, do you really think you can keep me here if I want to leave?"
"I know you're fast, but no matter how quick you are, there’s always a limit. Since we've found you, we naturally have our ways..." Before the old man could finish his sentence, he felt a gust of wind sweep past him. In the blink of an eye, Lin Yi, who had been over ten meters away just a moment ago, was now standing right in front of him.
"With speed like this, do you really think you can hold me?" Lin Yi said with a smug smile.
"So you're an Ability user. It's been many years since I've seen one. I didn't expect you all to be so eager to come out and grab a piece of the pie," the old man seemed lost in thought, completely ignoring Lin Yi before him.
Just as Lin Yi was about to say something, he suddenly noticed the old man's weight pressing down heavily on the chair he was sitting in. In an instant, four steel plates shot up from the ground, surrounding the old man tightly. Finally, the steel plates wrapped around him sank into the ground. The entire process was seamless; when everything settled down again, it was as if the old man had never existed.
At the same time as the old man vanished, a sound of metal scraping echoed around them. Lin Yi cursed under his breath and turned to retreat. But before he could take a step, bright lights suddenly illuminated the area. It was only then that Lin Yi noticed he was completely surrounded by metal plates, even overhead pressed down by thick sheets of metal. The once spacious hall had transformed into a massive Cage.
"Roar!" A familiar yet long-absent sound reverberated in this enclosed space, sending shivers down his spine.
