The most fundamental aspect of the battlefield is simply to survive; as long as one is alive, there is hope. Convoy resolutely chose to fight to the last against the Zombie Beast horde, all in the name of preserving more hope. Although everyone in Convoy sacrificed themselves, they managed to secure a chance for survival for others.
The remaining vehicles surged forward madly, the harsh sound of grinding metal echoing across the battlefield. The Zombies were caught off guard by the sudden turn of the convoy, which was now racing back at full speed. The truck that Lin Yi was in had taken the lead, and the task ahead was daunting.
The trucks, resembling giant meat grinders with their sharp edges, sliced through any Zombie that came too close. If this momentum continued, there was a good chance that Lin Yi and his team could break through. Currently, a large group of Zombies was desperately chasing from both sides, while the previously battered beast horde had shifted from a head-on collision to a rear chase. Everything seemed to be heading in a positive direction, and without the obstruction of any Giant Zombie, the trucks were crushing their way through, leaving dismembered limbs piled on either side of the road—a horrifying sight.
Lin Yi observed the Zombies reaching out with their emaciated black claws and roaring at the convoy, his face betraying a calm demeanor. Over the past two months, he had seen far too much. He began to question whether he had become somewhat cold-blooded; otherwise, why did he feel no disgust at the sight of those Zombies with their blackened teeth?
"Boss! My Flame Gun is out of energy!" Flower Cannon exclaimed, patting his Flame Gun with a look of helplessness.
Ammunition had always been an issue; after all, human resources were limited. Whenever such troublesome situations arose, ammunition became extremely scarce. Fortunately, Lin Yi's team consisted of individuals with rich combat experience who wouldn't easily give up when faced with difficulties.
"Douglas, use your mental energy to control your throwing knives and keep firing your Flame Gun!” Lin Yi calmly dispatched yet another approaching Zombie, not even lifting his eyes as he spoke.
The members of the Blood Envoy Mercenary Corps had unconsciously recognized Lin Yi, naturally accepting his commands without hesitation. After handing his Flame Gun to Flower Cannon, Douglas began preparing for knife combat. At that moment, Lin Yi suddenly waved his hand and said, “Douglas, you should conserve your strength; there may be more important tasks ahead!”
Hearing this from Lin Yi, Douglas felt relieved; he had been tense throughout their journey and welcomed a moment's rest.
Just as everyone breathed a sigh of relief, thinking they were safe once they broke through, a strange voice came through the speaker: “Mr. Lin, hello! I am the Vice Captain of the Operation Team. There’s something I need to ask you—did our captain tell you how to contact headquarters?”
Lin Yi was taken aback; he had almost forgotten about this matter. Until now, it had been Bullet who communicated with Kachi. Their team was merely acting in coordination for this mission. With Bullet's sudden death, the entire extermination team found itself leaderless.
“Can’t you reach General Khaki?” Lin Yi asked hopefully, feeling as if he were stuck in quicksand and unable to control the situation's development.
“Mr. Lin, don’t worry,” came the reply. “Before setting out, our general emphasized that this operation is crucial and highly confidential. Therefore, only our captain has direct communication with higher-ups; we follow his lead.”
Everyone felt a wave of panic wash over them upon hearing this. They had just escaped from the siege of the Horde, only to find themselves in an awkward situation without any support.
At that moment, Pachy, who had been silent until now, spoke up: “There won’t be any problems. I believe that with General Khaki's capabilities, finding us should be quite easy.”
Lin Yi glanced at Pachy and tapped his head, suddenly realizing something. However, the Vice Captain still seemed confused about how to inform Kachi and kept asking questions. To satisfy his desire for revenge against them, Lin Yi remained silent, smiling to himself. After all, they hadn't told him anything until trouble arose.
Things went much smoother than expected as the convoy miraculously burst out of the Zombie Sea. Although the beast horde was fast, nothing could outrun a vehicle.
Everyone was overjoyed; they had never managed such a smooth breakout before. Especially this time, escaping from the encirclement of Zombies and Corpse Beasts was nothing short of a miracle. Lin Yi felt a surge of excitement within him. After so many battles, he could clearly sense his combat abilities improving. Not only had his marksmanship advanced, but his reaction speed had also become increasingly agile. By his own assessment, he was nearing the level of elite combat skills. As for why someone who used to get winded after running a few hundred meters could now fight at the level of Special Forces, he had thought of several reasons but couldn't fully convince himself.
The convoy sped away from the Zombie Sea, and in just over ten minutes, the hellish scenes they had just witnessed vanished. Lin Yi climbed from the window onto the roof of the vehicle, wanting to feel the cool breeze. He always felt a bit stifled, as if he couldn't find comfort no matter where he went.
The climate on the Plateau was still quite cold at this time, with distant mountains presenting a stark and icy grandeur. Lin Yi tried to stand on tiptoe to see what lay beyond the mountain, but the rough road made it impossible; he could only sit on the roof and gaze at the colorful landscape of the African continent below. All he saw was desolation—aside from a few patches of greenery, nothing caught Lin Yi's interest.
Suddenly, Lin Yi's gaze fixed on something ahead that made him gasp in surprise and alertness. Just moments ago, he had caught sight of a frail figure several dozen meters away from the convoy. When he thought he might have been mistaken, he saw that figure slowly turning around. The cool breeze had blurred his vision slightly.
It was an eerie sight; in such a desolate place, encountering a solitary person was far less likely than witnessing a meteor fall right before one's eyes. Lin Yi's heart raced, but he did not stop the convoy's advance.
"There's someone ahead; everyone stay alert!" Lin Yi felt that this situation was too strange to be explained by logic, so he instructed everyone to prepare for battle while he crouched on top of the vehicle, ready to fire at any moment.
The convoy finally halted about ten meters from that figure, allowing Lin Yi to see clearly who stood before them! It was still that gaunt body and that face etched with deep lines—a severely dehydrated skeleton of a person.
"Zhao Pei," Lin Yi thought grimly; this nightmare had lingered in his mind for too long. He knew it wouldn't die easily. However, he hadn't expected to encounter him again so soon—last time Zhao Pei had orchestrated the destruction of a defensive fortress. It seemed wherever Zhao Pei appeared marked the onset of doom for a city. Meeting him again certainly meant trouble.
Without hesitation this time, Lin Yi signaled Flower Cannon and Bai with a glance; both immediately understood!
"Zing!"
"Zing!" Two crimson beams shot forth in an instant toward Zhao Pei's forehead. The laser beams traveled at an astonishing speed; no one could dodge them at such velocity—what could be faster than light? Lin Yi felt nervous, unsure if they would successfully eliminate this undead menace this time. Although they had once been friends, this version of Zhao Pei—who refused to acknowledge his identity as Zhao Pei—posed an immense threat. He needed to find every possible way to eliminate him—not out of some heroic duty but simply to end his nightmare sooner.
No one could move faster than light; however, if one reacted in advance, it was another story altogether. Just as Lin Yi signaled Flower Cannon and Bai to fire, Zhao Pei surged forward like a ghost with incredible speed toward the convoy. The two deadly beams inevitably missed their target as Zhao Pei reached the center of the convoy.
Lin Yi's eyes had just followed Zhao Pei's movements when he saw it flash to the vehicle behind him.
At that moment, an incredible scene unfolded. The once formidable Big Truck was effortlessly lifted by Zhao Pei with both hands. The entire truck was raised from the front, and without any hesitation, it was thrown far down the path from which the convoy had come.
Lin Yi couldn't fathom how much strength that required. He only knew that even with the Potential Gene Drug, he could barely lift a truck, let alone throw it as far as Zhao Pei had done.
Everyone stared in disbelief at Zhao Pei's display, momentarily forgetting to retaliate. As the sound of crashing echoed with a loud boom, they finally reacted, raising their guns to shoot. However, Zhao Pei always seemed to be one step ahead, disappearing before the laser beams could reach it.
This time, Zhao Pei had directly evaded to beneath Lin Yi's vehicle, its grayish-white eyes fixed intently on him. Yet it waved its hand, signaling Lin Yi not to attempt an attack.
Lin Yi understood Zhao Pei's gesture and shouted for everyone to stop and not act recklessly. It was ironic that a large group of highly skilled Special Forces was being threatened by a living dead creature. On this narrow road, it was clear that the undead had the upper hand.
"Bug... kill... damn it!" Lin Yi was stunned; he could hardly believe his ears. He had encountered countless Zombies before, but this was the first time he had met one that could actually speak.
"How can you talk?" Lin Yi's voice trembled slightly.
"You leave, they die!" Zhao Pei continued in a slow and deliberate manner, completely ignoring Lin Yi's shocked feelings.
