Watching his hopes being shattered bit by bit was an excruciating experience for Lin Yi, who was currently enduring one setback after another. He began to feel hatred, a deep-seated loathing for the culprit behind all this disaster. It seemed he had never hated anyone as much as he did now. But no matter how much he hated, it changed nothing; he had no idea who was truly responsible for everything happening behind the scenes. He struggled against the tide, and even though he felt powerless, he was determined to fight once more.
"Fire quickly! Don't let those bastards get close to the helicopter!" Lin Yi shouted desperately. He could not allow those detestable creatures to extinguish his hope.
When the Undead Birds flew away, everyone felt a momentary sense of relief. Then they heard Lin Yi's loud shout and realized that the helicopter sent to rescue them had arrived, but that group of Undead Birds was launching a surprise attack on their savior. It was intolerable; everyone raised their Laser Guns and began firing wildly at the Undead Birds.
Lin Yi dashed forward in a few quick movements, positioning himself in front of the group. Most people had grown accustomed to Lin Yi's godlike presence in battle. However, Paul and Woods, who were unfamiliar with him, gaped in disbelief. Both had previously crossed Lin Yi, and if he had displayed such formidable combat prowess back then, who would have dared provoke him? Woods silently congratulated himself for aligning with the right person and not resisting fiercely. Paul, on the other hand, felt a lingering dread and thought that since he had already apologized, Lin Yi should not hold a grudge any longer.
"What do you think?" Li Qiweng asked when Lin Yi approached, her words seemingly out of context.
Lin Yi understood her immediately; he shared the same concern. "Is 'he' still following us?" His brow furrowed deeply; he did not want to confront that figure, yet it lingered like a parasite, continuously affecting him.
"It’s impossible for only one Zombie like that to appear; there must be others nearby. If we want to escape this time, our best bet is to kill the Zombie commanding them!" Li Qiweng scanned the surroundings, trying to locate that troublesome Zombie as soon as possible.
"Is that Intelligent Zombie around us again?" Pachy asked in surprise. He had witnessed Zhao Pei's tactics before and knew it was a tough opponent.
"This is bad, but it's clear that these Undead Birds are being controlled!" Lin Yi said, looking at the Undead Birds closing in on the helicopter with a worried expression. Fortunately, as long as the helicopter landed safely, these Undead Birds would not be able to damage this steel beast.
"Boss! Look at what those Undead Birds are doing!" Witerson II suddenly shouted while pointing at the birds in the sky.
Lin Yi turned to see that the helicopter, which had been flying, was now hovering in preparation for landing. However, at that moment, the Undead Birds were already approaching; what they initially thought would be a mere distraction turned into a reckless charge towards the helicopter.
With loud thuds resembling urgent knocking sounds, all the Undead Birds crashed into the helicopter's body without regard for their lives. Although it seemed like they were attacking with no chance of success, the pilot inside could clearly feel the vibrations from their assault. Even though this pilot was seeing these Undead Birds for the first time, he was chosen for this mission because he was no ordinary person. Yet as the Undead Birds swarmed over every inch of the helicopter's surface, he felt as if he had entered a dark room; aside from the blinking lights inside the cabin, everything outside was obscured.
The pilot struggled to remain calm. Although he could see through the glass screen that an Undead Bird was sticking its Scarlet tongue out at him defiantly while pecking at the body with its decayed beak—splattering various unknown liquids across the glass—he focused on keeping his composure. As long as they could land smoothly, everything would be fine.
A familiar roar echoed nearby; a large wave of Zombies was rushing toward them. Most were just ordinary Zombies, but there were still quite a few Giant Zombies among them.
"Lin Yi! We should take out those Zombies first!" At this moment, Lin Yi's eyes were bloodshot as he stared at the helicopter besieged by Undead Birds. He wanted to shoot but feared hitting the helicopter instead. Seeing this, Pachy could only remind Lin Yi that if they delayed any longer, their group would face annihilation even faster.
Lin Yi withdrew his gaze from the Undead Birds and replied to Pachy: "Let Wu Hao come pick us up; we can't rely on this helicopter anymore!"
Pachy nodded and quickly sent the message to Wu Hao. They had no choice but to use their backup plan, even though it would come at a significant cost.
The Super Zombie was tough to deal with, but the ordinary Zombies were no match for those equipped with superior gear. Even the Giant Zombies, which had once posed a threat to Lin Yi, were easily dispatched by Jimmy and Flower Cannon, who could take down a Giant Zombie's head with just three shots.
"Bang! Bang!" A series of strange sounds echoed, and the helicopter pilot felt as if he had been struck by high-voltage electricity, his body trembling involuntarily.
The piercing alarm blared in the relatively spacious Cabin, and the pilot realized that the situation was dire. Outside, there were harsh scraping sounds; if he could see, he would notice the Undead Birds recklessly charging toward the helicopter's rotor blades. Although those Undead Birds were shredded into pieces by the high-speed rotation of the blades, one or two casualties were not enough to deter them—ten would follow!
As hundreds of Undead Birds recklessly flew toward the rotor blades, problems finally arose. The pilot, already panicking, perhaps in an attempt to shake off the Undead Birds, suddenly pulled up on the controls just as they were about to land. The helicopter began climbing higher into the sky. However, at that moment, all the Undead Birds clung tightly to the aircraft or interfered with the rotor's normal operation. As the helicopter ascended, the rotor controlling the tail began to slow down, causing the aircraft to spin erratically in mid-air like a drunken man.
"167 calling headquarters, 167 calling headquarters! I am encountering a major emergency; requesting support! Requesting support!" The pilot's voice trembled as he desperately called for assistance.
"Headquarters received your message; please hold on for rescue!" came a cold reply from the other end of the machine before falling silent. Frustrated, the pilot threw down his radio.
"Then let's die together!" The pilot frantically pressed the button for the onboard cannon in an attempt to shoot down the Undead Birds. But it was clear that all efforts were in vain; the Undead Birds were too close for the cannon to pose any threat.
"Clank! Clank! Clank!" The sound echoed in the pilot's ears as if gears were struggling due to a lack of lubrication; he felt dizzy as he heard Death's call.
Under relentless attacks from an ever-increasing number of Undead Birds, the main rotor of the helicopter finally came to a halt. These Undead Birds had triumphed over the Iron Eagle for the first time in its century-long reign of dominance in the skies using nothing but their flesh and blood. However, this was not a cause for celebration—especially not for Lin Yi and his group.
In less than a minute, Lin Yi watched helplessly as what had once been a helicopter spiraling chaotically through the air plummeted like a kite with its string cut.
With a deafening crash, that steel black hawk fell from its aerial perch.
Although many Undead Birds began to flee when the helicopter started its descent, it had not been flying very high. Thus, during its fall, numerous Undead Birds met their end alongside it. The massive explosion that followed also claimed many more lives among them. The previously crowded sky filled with Undead Birds suffered heavy casualties as they continuously threw themselves against the helicopter. By the time of its explosion, there were hardly any remaining Undead Birds left that could pose a significant threat to Lin Yi and his companions.
Paul, unaware that Lin Yi had prepared a backup plan, saw the helicopter crash within that brief minute and his expression grew increasingly desperate.
"How long until we arrive?" Lin Yi turned to Pachy and asked.
Pachy glanced at his multifunctional communicator and replied calmly, "Two minutes left!"
Lin Yi sighed; it had taken only two minutes for the first helicopter to arrive before such drastic changes occurred. Now Wu Hao was still two minutes away, and he had no idea what would happen next. But as he observed more and more Zombies approaching, his sense of foreboding only deepened.
"Boss, I saw a Zombie standing still among the group of Zombies, acting very strangely!" The Flower Cannon, responsible for long-range attacks on the Giant Zombie, turned to Lin Yi, who was furrowing his brow.
"Let me take a look!" Lin Yi felt a surge of excitement; he thought to himself that he wasn't afraid of a clever opponent, just one that kept hiding and not moving.
Through the scope of the upgraded HQ4 Laser Gun in the Flower Cannon's hands, Lin Yi spotted a withered Zombie silently standing behind the frenzied attacking Zombies, as if it were an old tree rooted in place. However, this Zombie looked more like a desiccated corpse, showing no signs of decay on its face.
"Yes, that's the one! If we take it down, we can run away safely later!" Lin Yi was so happy he nearly jumped up.
"Boss, what's going on?" The Flower Cannon looked at Lin Yi with confusion.
"Take out that strange Zombie you just saw!" Lin Yi instructed the Flower Cannon.
Without hesitation, the Flower Cannon snapped his fingers and immediately prepared to shoot.
Three seconds later, a crimson laser beam shot towards the withered Zombie.
"What happened?" Lin Yi asked eagerly.
The Flower Cannon pointed awkwardly in the direction he had just shot at and stammered, "It... it actually dodged! It's as if it knew I was going to kill it!"
