The earth trembled once more, the dull thuds echoing like a heartbeat in everyone's chest. Everyone hoped the sound would cease, but it seemed determined to test their endurance, drawing ever closer.
Lin Yi felt a chill run through his entire body. At that moment, he wished he could transform into an invincible superhero, capable of effortlessly annihilating any Zombie that crossed his path. Yet reality was cruel; just when despair began to set in, even more despair followed.
The Super Zombie moved with great strides, and after a few leaps, it was only a few dozen meters away from the crowd. For the hulking Super Zombie, that distance could be covered in the blink of an eye.
"Wen, hold on!" Lin Yi didn't hesitate any longer and quickly took out the Potential Gene Drug and consumed it.
The familiar sensation returned, a powerful force coursing through him that made all feelings of confusion and helplessness vanish. Lin Yi felt an overwhelming surge of strength within him as he fixed his gaze on the approaching Super Zombie. In an instant, he shot forward like a bolt of lightning, reaching the Giant Zombie's side.
Though Lin Yi strained to look up, all he could see was the Giant Zombie's chin dripping with blood. He gripped two Silver Souls tightly, ready to deliver a fatal blow at any moment. They had been caught off guard before, leading to their disastrous defeat against this Super Zombie. While Lin Yi's personal combat strength might not be enough to gain a decisive advantage over the Zombie, if he utilized his weapons effectively, taking down this Zombie wouldn't be too difficult—provided someone could get close without being turned into mush.
A piercing howl of wind rushed toward him as the Super Zombie sprang into action.
Lin Yi's advantage lay in his incredible speed. Although the Zombie was powerful and fast in its own right, it posed no real threat in Lin Yi's eyes.
As he watched the massive hand capable of crushing an elephant hurtling toward him, Lin Yi pushed off with his toes and darted sideways. Just as he leaped aside, the Zombie's hand came crashing down.
Dust erupted into the air from the impact of the blow. However, Zombies did not rely solely on sight; they had eyes but did not see as humans did. In that moment when dust obscured Lin Yi's vision, the Super Zombie's other hand was already moving swiftly toward him.
Lin Yi's ears twitched; the ominous sound sent shivers down his spine. Though he couldn't see at that moment, his acute hearing picked up on the danger approaching.
The giant hand moved faster than before; clearly, Consciousness had realized that Lin Yi was not easy prey. Lin Yi tightened his legs again and sprang away just in time.
The Super Zombie's roar was particularly piercing; even its powerful sound waves could make one's eardrums tingle. After two missed strikes, the Super Zombie appeared irritated and let out a furious howl.
Lin Yi was equally frustrated; dodging endlessly was not a sustainable strategy. Although he had his own plans, this Super Zombie was no fool and wouldn't simply allow him to execute them unimpeded.
Fortunately, the Undead Birds did not attack Lin Yi. Even if they had come for him, he was prepared. He believed that with his two Silver Souls in hand, he could defend himself effectively.
As Lin Yi dodged once more, the Super Zombie grew enraged. It lifted its massive foot and aimed it at Lin Yi as if intending to crush him into a pancake. Lin Yi sensed a heavy shadow looming over him and quickly retreated a few steps.
The Super Zombie missed its stomp and swung its right hand directly at Lin Yi. Just as Lin Yi's toes touched down again and he prepared to push off once more, he realized he lacked sufficient momentum. The giant hand was about to strike his head just as he had taken a step back.
Everything happened too quickly; in an instant, the Super Zombie's hand descended upon Lin Yi’s head. Time seemed to freeze at that moment as both Lin Yi and the giant hand were suspended in place.
What was meant to happen eventually did. Just as the giant hand descended from above, Lin Yi took a single step back. But that step was enough to escape the crushing grip of the Super Zombie. However, even though he had evaded the weight of its palm, Lin Yi was still within the attack range of the Zombie.
He had to fight! Gritting his teeth, Lin Yi crossed his twin blades and aimed for the Zombie's fingers.
With a series of sickening crunches, the sound of bone and flesh being shredded echoed as Lin Yi successfully severed two of the Super Zombie's fingers. He managed to find a foothold amidst the gaps between its fingers, avoiding being crushed.
Now was his chance! As the Super Zombie's palm hit the ground, and with two fingers already cut off, Lin Yi wasted no time and stepped onto the back of the Zombie's hand.
With a series of quick steps, Lin Yi propelled himself forward, aiming to get closer to the Zombie's head for a decisive strike.
A long howl erupted from the Super Zombie, seemingly venting its fury. Just as Lin Yi took a few steps, the Zombie instantly reacted, swinging its right arm in an attempt to fling him away.
Feeling his balance falter, Lin Yi quickly drove one of his blades into the Zombie's arm. From a distance, it looked like a giant was playing with a doll as Lin Yi was thrown into the air. Yet he held tightly onto the knife embedded in the Zombie's arm, resisting being tossed aside.
The Super Zombie seemed to tire momentarily and paused for just under a second. Seizing this opportunity, Lin Yi exerted all his strength, pulling himself up from mid-air.
With a dull thud, Lin Yi managed to leap onto the Super Zombie's shoulder. However, compared to the massive creature, he appeared as fragile as an infant perched atop a towering giant.
Lin Yi had no time to ponder his own vulnerability; within less than a second after landing on the Super Zombie's shoulder, he swung his blade toward its head.
The sound was akin to a watermelon being sliced open as Lin Yi struck down at the top of the Zombie's skull.
Contrary to expectations, Lin Yi thought he would cleave the Zombie's head in two. However, due to the hasty nature of his attack and insufficient force, he only managed to cut halfway through. Of course, this was also because this Super Zombie was enormous; its head was more than twice the size of an average person's.
"Ah!" The Zombie, forever oblivious to pain, was thoroughly enraged by Lin Yi's attack. It turned its gaze toward him with bulging eyes filled with fury. Its face, covered in rotting flesh, was now smeared with foul-smelling blood plasma mixed with darkened brain matter. The originally pale eyes were now dyed crimson, radiating an aura of rage that sent chills down one's spine.
The Super Zombie roared with its wide-open mouth, releasing waves of nauseating stench. Meanwhile, its left hand swung toward Lin Yi.
Lin Yi remained calm; he wasn't foolish enough to make reckless moves. Just as the Zombie opened its mouth and raised its arm, he swiftly retrieved a grenade from his backpack and bit off the safety pin before accurately tossing it into the gaping maw of the Zombie.
In less than a second, Lin Yi executed three actions: throwing the grenade, drawing his blade, and leaping! At that moment, the Zombie's roar finally escaped as its left hand only swung halfway through its arc.
"Boom!" A tremendous explosion erupted just as Lin Yi ducked down behind cover from above the Zombie’s head; the deafening sound reverberated around him.
A rain of blood and chunks of flesh fell from above. Lin Yi wiped his face; it felt sticky and grimy from whatever part of the Zombie it had splattered on him. He quickly opened his military water bottle and rinsed his face off; getting infected by zombie toxins was not something he wanted to experience.
With a loud bang, just as Lin Yi stood up, the Super Zombie swayed a few times before finally collapsing. Its once intact form was now marred; after Lin Yi threw a grenade that blew off its head, there was a massive gaping hole in its chest cavity, and its left hand was reduced to nothing but a stump. But Lin Yi didn’t care about that; his goal was to eliminate this Zombie.
Lin Yi recalled the moments that had just passed, feeling a lingering fear. Although the sensation of being superhuman was exhilarating, he didn’t want to experience it again; it was like playing with his life.
Just as Lin Yi prepared to return to his team, a tremendous roar suddenly echoed through the air. Following the sound, he spotted a massive Black Helicopter approaching.
Finally, I can go back, Lin Yi sighed inwardly.
Suddenly, a series of frantic screeches pierced the air. The Undead Birds, which had been trying to break through the laser defense line, seemed to have been stimulated by something; their previously orderly attack had turned chaotic.
No, it wasn’t that they were confused; they were changing formation! Lin Yi realized in an instant that those dark swarms of Undead Birds seemed to have abandoned their attack on Li Qiweng and the others.
Lin Yi had taken less than a minute to deal with the Super Zombie, so Li Qiweng and the others hadn’t eliminated many Undead Birds yet. Now, after changing formation, these Undead Birds soared into the sky with renewed vigor!
Could it be that they were intimidated by my bravery and decided to flee? Lin Yi watched as the Undead Birds suddenly took off, puzzled.
But soon Lin Yi discovered the truth: those Undead Birds weren’t fleeing; they were heading to attack the Black Helicopter that had arrived early!
“Close the windows!” Lin Yi shouted loudly towards the helicopter, but it was completely useless; the deafening roar of the helicopter drowned out all other sounds.
