Disaster seldom comes alone. Just when one thinks they have suffered enough misfortune, another calamity strikes. Lin Yi felt that everything should have come to an end, and he could finally return to rest, but the situation was far from over. When God intends for someone to grow, He often first drives them to madness. 0

Various birds were sprawled across the ground, completely devoid of their usual grace in the air. They lunged at Lin Yi and his companions like crazed beasts. They were delicacies, the finest of foods. 0

The calls of all the birds were filled with excitement, their flapping wings beating faster than usual. Strangely, all the birds were pitch black at that moment, and one could even see the skeletal remains exposed from their decaying flesh on their wings. They gazed greedily at the group of terrified humans fleeing before them. Some birds suddenly opened their mouths, revealing scarlet tongues that stood out starkly against the dark surroundings. They soared through the air, fighting for survival, but in Lin Yi's eyes, these birds were demons from hell; fear and despair were clearly etched on every face. 0

"Brother! Didn't you say there were only fifty?" Lin Yi's fingers trembled as he struggled to suppress his rising panic. 0

As the flock of Corpseification birds drew closer, an unbearable stench filled the air. 0

"Gather together and maintain firing frequency!" Seeing Paul’s pale face, Lin Yi realized that even if he asked for explanations now, what good would it do? 0

Everyone fell silent. After hearing Lin Yi's shout, they quickly huddled together. They didn’t want to die just yet, especially with their mission so close to completion. 0

The power of the Laser Gun needed no further explanation; although it was a challenge to deal with those Super Zombies, they could easily slaughter these clustered birds. 0

“Zing! Zing!” The sounds of firing echoed in everyone’s ears as the oncoming Undead Birds scattered like pebbles thrown into a lake. The foul-smelling black feathers fell like dark snowflakes drifting from purgatory. 0

Lin Yi estimated that there were at least over a thousand Undead Birds. They surged forward in dense waves; if they couldn’t stop them, they would likely become nothing but bones. 0

Everyone was desperately firing lasers, praying to hold off these harbingers of death for a little longer. But there were too many; only a dozen or so remained with Lin Yi now, and even their coordinated fire couldn’t fully resist the relentless advance of the Undead Birds. 0

Each Undead Bird charged toward the deadly beams without fear, seemingly intent on paving a path for their companions toward a feast. Even when struck by laser beams and scattered, they quickly regrouped and charged at Lin Yi and his group once more. 0

The powerful HQ4 modified Laser Gun could take down several Undead Birds with a single shot, turning them into charred corpses that fell from the sky. Yet even so, Lin Yi and his team couldn’t halt the approaching tide; they could only run backward while firing desperately. 0

“Paul, how many minutes until the helicopter arrives?” Lin Yi felt overwhelmed; although the Undead Birds hadn’t fully closed in yet, they were now less than ten meters away and had the capability to break through their laser defenses at any moment and devour them whole. 0

“Only thirty seconds have passed! They’ll need at least two more minutes to get here!” Paul replied while returning fire; he didn’t want to die either—his era had just begun, and he wouldn’t go down without being a hero. 0

Death loomed close for everyone. 0

In thirty seconds, Lin Yi and his team managed twenty rounds of concentrated fire. Although theoretically they should have killed seven or eight hundred Undead Birds by now, it seemed to Lin Yi that there was no noticeable decrease in their numbers. 0

Lin Yi touched the pocket compartment where the Potential Gene Drug was stored. He had snatched it from Ika just before leaving. Now, only he and Li Qiweng had any left, and they had no surplus Gene Drugs to use. Although they had been in contact with Lion City, hoping for support in Gene Drugs, the situation was too chaotic now, and Lion City was powerless to help. 0

The Undead Birds were flying closer, increasing their defensive pressure. The God of Death could break through the laser defenses at any moment. 0

Time seemed to slow down, while Lin Yi and his companions were in a dire situation; perhaps in the next moment, they would be completely wiped out. Lin Yi's mind raced as he tried to maximize everyone's capabilities. However, they were all flesh and blood, and fear of the Undead Birds gnawing at them was palpable. 0

Lin Yi looked around and spotted Number 19. A thought struck him; he remembered his ability. Perhaps when everyone else was consumed, he might still survive. 0

"Number 19, come stand with me at the front!" Lin Yi called out. Although they were retreating while counterattacking, Lin Yi wanted to place the strongest fighters in the most dangerous positions. He might not be the strongest himself, but his responsibility was the greatest. 0

"Okay, Yi Ge!" Number 19 nodded and swiftly emerged from the crowd to stand beside Lin Yi. 0

"If any scattered Undead Birds come close, remember to help everyone fend them off," Lin Yi spoke quickly; coordinating his hands and mouth was no easy task. 0

Number 19 understood Lin Yi's intent without needing further explanation. His youthful face had already taken on a determined expression. As an orphan who had always been looked down upon by others, he felt grateful that Lin Yi not only saved his life but treated him with equality. Number 19 respected Lin Yi deeply. 0

“Douglas, how much can you control your mental power right now?” Lin Yi asked, panting slightly. His heavy breathing worried Li Qiweng, who was closest to him. 0

"According to Mr. Wu Hao's method, I can control at least three knives for high-speed movement!" Douglas replied, beads of sweat forming on his forehead. Although his mental power was strong enough, running was not his forte; fatigue was beginning to show. 0

Three knives' worth of control, Lin Yi thought silently. He understood what that meant; Wu Hao had explained this situation to him before. For Ability users who excelled in mental power, their combat effectiveness was generally assessed by how many knives they could control simultaneously for high-speed movement. Mental power users were often employed for long-range manipulation tasks—killing and stealing were among their missions. The more knives one could control, the stronger their combat capability would be. Most novice mental power users could only perfectly control one knife for high-speed movement but could manage two after special training. Those who could control three were undoubtedly formidable Ability users. According to Wu Hao, they once encountered someone capable of controlling seven knives simultaneously; just a few glances from such a person could induce a stinging sensation in others. 0

"Alright, gather a few knives and use them to ambush those Undead Birds!" After considering it for a moment, Lin Yi decided to let Douglas unleash his combat potential. 0

At this point, every bit of combat strength increased their chances of survival. Paul had just escaped from the cave and left his weapon behind; now he could use Douglas's weapons instead. 0

Everyone was equipped with a short blade about a foot long, and Douglas quickly gathered three short blades. Just then, they had reached their initial gathering point and found a piece of crumbling wall. Everyone leaned against the wall as they prepared to resist. 0

Douglas concentrated all his mental energy; the three short blades on the ground seemed to have a life of their own as they stood upright in an instant. 0

"Whoosh." 0

"Whoosh." 0

"Whoosh." 0

Three piercing sounds of slicing through the air echoed, as three short blades seemed to be drawn by some unseen force, instantly flying into the midst of the Undead Birds. The three controlled blades appeared to have eyes of their own, spinning at a terrifying speed as they entered the flock. They resembled a meat grinder, and the number of Undead Birds in the swarm visibly decreased at an alarming rate. The three blades formed a fan-like apparatus, creating a void wherever they went. In less than ten seconds, they had slaughtered at least a hundred Undead Birds, their effectiveness several times greater than that of an ordinary soldier, and with significantly increased safety. 0

The sudden onslaught of flying knives threw the Undead Birds into a state of panic. However, a strange scene unfolded; instead of scattering in disarray as one would expect from mindless creatures, they quickly adjusted their formation and created distance between themselves, greatly reducing the lethality of the blades. 0

Lin Yi's eyelids twitched. Intelligent Zombies were always more dangerous than mere brute-force Giant Zombies. He struggled to calm his racing heart. What he saw was not just the relentless diving attacks of the Undead Birds but also the mastermind behind them. 0

Douglas was no fool either. After the Undead Birds had dispersed, he separated his three short blades and directed them toward the areas with the highest concentration of Undead Birds. Only someone with his formidable mental strength could manage to control three blades with such precision while multitasking. 0

Suddenly, one Undead Bird broke through wave after wave of laser fire and charged toward the group. Everyone was busy shooting their Laser Guns and had no time to react. Fortunately, Lin Yi had already positioned Unit 19 at the front as a strong barrier for everyone. 0

The Undead Bird that breached their defenses was small in size and wasted no time in charging straight for Unit 19. 0

"Ding ding!" The speed of the Undead Bird was impressive as it lunged at Unit 19's chest, frantically trying to pierce its neck with its sharpened beak. However, what had previously worked flawlessly now failed miserably; after several attempts to peck, it felt as though it were striking against steel. 0

Though Unit 19 felt some fear, it bravely endured the overwhelming stench and swiftly severed the head of the frustrated Undead Bird with a single strike. 0

Seeing Unit 19 achieve its first victory brought a sense of relief to Lin Yi, who nodded approvingly. However, just as he casually glanced ahead, the hope that had risen within him was abruptly shattered into pieces. 0
