No matter what happens, every action will have its consequences. These consequences may be good, or they may be unbearable. However, Mandray chose the final way; he was not afraid of death. Since he had to die, taking a bad person with him should not be a loss. So when he was finally pulled into the air by Reagan, he knew his end could only be this way. He chose to detonate the last grenade on him, hoping it would have some impact on others.
Lin Yi felt a surge of panic. The moment he opened his eyes, he was met with an endless sea of Zombies. They roared at him, seemingly mocking his weakness. Lin Yi was furious, but soon panic set in because he couldn't see a single teammate; even Li Qiweng was not by his side. Looking around, it seemed the world had been overrun by Zombies, and at that moment, he felt abandoned by his team. A chill ran down his spine as despair washed over him. His arms ached painfully, and his chest burned with sharp pain. He wanted nothing more than to wait for death; it felt like the best relief.
"Roar!" A Zombie lunged at him, and Lin Yi instinctively jumped in fear. He ran and ran, as if the path ahead had no end, while the horde of Zombies behind him seemed boundless.
Lin Yi grew increasingly exhausted and wanted to give up, but he couldn't; he still needed to find Wen. So he continued to run, though he didn't know how long it had been before he finally slowed down. Turning around, he found that only one Zombie remained behind him.
Yet even though there was just one Zombie, it felt as if he were facing thousands of them, filled with terror and unease.
"Mandray!" Lin Yi collapsed to the ground as he recognized the face of the figure before him. Though this person’s originally dark and simple face was now covered in decaying flesh, and his hollow eye sockets were devoid of eyeballs, making him look utterly horrifying.
"Why did you run off alone?" Mandray's dark and emaciated hand bore sharp nails that seemed ready to pierce Lin Yi's veins at any moment. His breath sounded like a wheezing asthma attack.
"I..." Lin Yi didn't know what to say; all he could do was push himself back frantically against the ground.
Suddenly, Lin Yi felt the ground beneath his hands give way, and he flipped over, plummeting downward.
"Ah!" Lin Yi couldn't help but scream but then realized that he had landed on a soft mattress; he hadn't fallen at all.
"Were you dreaming about being assaulted by your sister? You screamed so loudly!" A teasing voice came from beside him; Lin Yi didn't need to turn around to know who it was.
"Stop making fun of me; I’m not that lucky!" Just waking up, Lin Yi's consciousness was still hazy, and his thoughts slipped out before he could think them through.
"Oh? So deep down in your subconscious you still think about this?" A delicate white hand reached toward Lin Yi's neck as if intending to choke him but hesitated for a moment before withdrawing.
Lin Yi felt cold sweat trickle down his back and quickly corrected himself: "What I meant is that my dreams are nightmares; how could I have dreams as carefree as ordinary people?"
"I won't hold it against you this time; I wouldn't want you to lie there like a corpse for three days straight, making it impossible for me to get any rest!" Li Qiweng's tone softened considerably, tinged with a hint of grievance but mostly relief from surviving after the catastrophe.
Only then did Lin Yi notice the fatigue etched on Li Qiweng's face; her once bright eyes were now bloodshot. His heart ached for her as he hurriedly took her hand and said softly, "Come on, let’s rest for a bit; it's all my fault."
"We're in a hospital!" Although Li Qiweng felt embarrassed, she ultimately didn’t pull her hand away from Lin Yi's grasp. Her cheeks flushed bright red like a young girl’s, exuding an air of innocence that made her even more endearing.
At that moment, Lin Yi realized he was lying on a snow-white bed surrounded by various medical equipment. He was the only patient in the room and could faintly see a door nearby leading to what seemed like a living room outside.
"Where is this place?" Lin Yi finally pieced together that while he knew he had been seriously injured, he hadn’t expected Li Qiweng to arrange such a luxurious suite for him in the hospital. But where exactly this place was remained a mystery to him!
"You're such a fool. Where was our plan supposed to take us?" Li Qiweng slapped Lin Yi's chest, causing him to wince in pain.
"Um, um, I can't remember the name!" Lin Yi stammered, still unable to figure out where they were.
"The doctor checked your head and said there was no injury, so why are you still so forgetful?" Li Qiweng lightly covered her cherry lips, her eyes squinting into slits.
"I’ve been lying here for three days; my head isn’t fully awake yet," Lin Yi said as he tried to shift his body up. Hearing that he had been lying there for three days made his back feel as if it were developing bedsores.
"What's wrong? Are you uncomfortable lying down?" Li Qiweng immediately asked with concern.
Lin Yi shook his head. "No, it's just that I've been lying here for three days without a shower, and I feel a bit unpleasant."
"What? Did I not wash you properly?" Li Qiweng didn’t laugh this time, but her eyes remained narrowed, signaling the onset of her irritation.
"Ah, you washed me? Didn't that mean you saw everything?" Lin Yi feigned surprise, crossing his arms over his chest.
"Who wants to see you? It's all just flesh. Now that you're better, I’m definitely going to set up a training plan for you!" Li Qiweng declared, shaking her fist and pouting slightly, revealing a rare playful side.
Lin Yi nodded vigorously like a chick pecking at rice, promising to strengthen his training. He was aware that his physical strength was a significant weakness and needed improvement. They were constantly in a precarious situation; only by becoming stronger could he increase his chances of survival.
At that moment, a large group of people rushed into the ward. Lin Yi focused his gaze and realized they were all familiar faces. After the Catastrophe, he was delighted to see his old teammates again.
"Boss, next time don’t push yourself so hard. You have no idea how lost I felt without you during these past few days," Flower Cannon joked as he entered wearing a white outfit, hands in his pockets while chewing gum.
Laughter erupted among the group, but soon everyone expressed their joy at Lin Yi's recovery.
Under everyone's "encouragement," Hai presented Lin Yi with a heart-shaped flower basket. Although everyone urged her to give Lin Yi a kiss on behalf of the Mercenary team, she blushed and stepped aside when she saw Lin Yi's hopeful gaze and Li Qiweng's barely concealed "killing intent."
"Captain, we’ve arrived in Addis Ababa. What’s our next move?" Witerson II asked as the atmosphere threatened to turn awkward.
Lin Yi paused for a moment and finally recalled the name of their intended destination from their earlier discussions. However, given the current situation, he had no idea how things would unfold or what thoughts he should entertain.
"First, tell me what happened while I was unconscious and what information you’ve gathered!" Lin Yi needed to clarify his thoughts.
Ika stepped forward and provided Lin Yi with a detailed account of the situation. As one of the few women in the team, she articulated things more clearly and thoroughly.
After Lin Yi fell unconscious, Number 19 fought desperately to drag him back. Of course, this process wouldn’t have been possible without the support of others. Bai and Flower Cannon concentrated their firepower on eliminating every Zombie that approached Lin Yi. Reagan had initially planned to fly over to assist Lin Yi and Number 19 but decided against it due to the dire circumstances; he feared it would only put David in danger. The group opted for long-range attacks instead, and with Douglas and Jerry’s efforts as Ability Users, they managed to bring Lin Yi back safely despite the dangers along the way.
As for the helicopter that was previously broken, it was actually Jerry's doing. Pachy, Jerry, and the others were the first to arrive at the temporary military camp, but Slo wouldn't let them board the helicopter at that time. Wu Hao then gave Jerry a suggestion to find a way to keep the pilot occupied. After that, he secretly worked with Pachy to drain the fuel from the tank, just to prevent anyone else on the helicopter from knowing how to fly it.
After Slo and the others got off the helicopter, Akin ran into the barracks to look for fuel. However, Akin faced many difficulties, which delayed them for some time. It was only at the last moment that everyone managed to escape. The helicopter then flew non-stop to Addis Ababa, encountering several groups of zombies along the way. They dared not land in any cities, as they simply couldn't trust the defensive capabilities of those urban areas.
The defenses in Addis Ababa were unprecedented; it had encircled several surrounding cities, forming a massive fortress. This gigantic stronghold was the largest and safest defensive area in the country, referred to as the Safe Haven. Here, it was like a concentrated version of Ethiopia, with wartime mobilization efforts making this region nearly self-sufficient.
Lin Yi was severely injured and had been unable to wake from his slumber due to taking Gene Drug. Eventually, they spent a fortune to get him into the National First Hospital, booking the most luxurious suite for his treatment. However, even after repeated examinations by doctors, they could not determine why Lin Yi had been unconscious for so long. Although Lin Yi's injuries were serious, it made no sense that he remained in a coma despite all efforts from the hospital. Of course, Li Qiweng knew all of this, so when Lin Yi's external injuries had been effectively treated, she offered to take care of him herself. Li Qiweng was considered a major benefactor of their hospital, so there was no need for them to question her motives.
"Wait a minute, where did we get the money?" Lin Yi thought about spending a fortune but couldn't recall anything valuable in their possession aside from some weapons.
The others exchanged smiles, and Jiao Jiao quickly chimed in, "It was quite a harvest; there was actually a large stash of gold on the helicopter!"
Before Lin Yi could inquire further about the gold, Bai Zai casually added, "Not just gold; we also brought back a person!"
"Who?" Lin Yi noticed Bai's expression wasn't very pleasant and guessed it wasn't good news.
"Slo," Witerson II whispered softly.
