"Never abandon, never give up," is indeed a famous saying. Lin Yi's current task is to not abandon his teammates and to maintain his determination to fight against the enemies. At this moment, he has regained much of his faith, especially with the addition of another superpowered individual to his team. Upon closer inspection, it seems he is the one man who should have been abandoned; without drugs, he truly is nothing.
However, Lin Yi does not think of himself that way. He still believes he has enough ability to lead this ragtag group. The presence of Number 19 is a good start. Lin Yi follows closely behind Number 19, dodging the attacks from Zombies while using Silver Soul to slash at them. The sharpness of Silver Soul should never be doubted; even someone like Lin Yi, who has never undergone training, finds it extremely convenient to wield it. Each time the blade glints coldly, a Zombie loses an arm or a leg.
Number 19 feels someone behind him and turns around to find Lin Yi. Curiously, he asks, "Mr. Lin, why are you following me?"
Lin Yi's face flushes; he can't very well say it's to protect a friend. However, he remembers that Number 19 seems unaware of his own superpower and quietly asks, "Don't you feel like there's something different about you compared to others?"
While swinging his large knife, Number 19 replies incredulously, "How did you know? I've never been injured and I'm not afraid of pain."
Lin Yi nods. It appears that most people with Ability physiques do not notice their superpowers. If someone had truly discovered this ability, perhaps the media would have already spread the news.
"Just keep killing enemies; you've got a bright future ahead!" Lin Yi can't afford to talk too much with Number 19 right now. His only goal is to fight and seize a glimmer of hope. Although Number 19's physique gives him some hope, it does not guarantee victory in this battle.
Number 19 smiles shyly; he has never been genuinely praised like this before! At this moment, the only way to express his joy is by working harder to slay Zombies—perhaps Reagan would be furious if he found out.
Yet there are still many Zombies around. Despite everyone doing their best to kill them, the relentless spirit of the enemies is terrifying. The current situation is that unless they find a decisive method to turn the tide, their chances of defeat are high. Those who are scratched by Zombies will eventually undergo Corpseification, and the number of Zombies can continuously replenish, meaning Lin Yi's side will keep diminishing.
Lin Yi is no superhero; after half an hour of slashing with his knife, he feels completely exhausted and has no choice but to step back and rest for a moment. The current scene shows armored vehicles continuously firing at the Zombies pouring out from the city gates while others hunt down stragglers or those jumping off the walls. Ordinary Zombies lack combat strength; even though their numbers are overwhelming, they are barely held back by the human forces. However, humans can tire out while Zombies seem to fight tirelessly, unyielding.
Although the battle has only lasted half an hour, fatigue is already evident on everyone's faces. They cannot afford to relax for even a moment; they must concentrate all their energy on fighting to avoid being bitten by Zombies and facing Corpseification themselves. Looking at those who have undergone Corpseification is horrifying—they are more ferocious than the wildest beasts, and no one wishes to become like that.
"Boss, what should we do?" Ika has also retreated to regroup; after all, she is a girl. Although she has trained in some combat techniques, she is not a professional.
"We might have to collectively use Potential Gene Drugs to carve out a bloody path!" Lin Yi does not have high hopes for their current situation, especially considering how many Zombies might be waiting outside.
"But there are only four doses left! No matter how hard we fight, there will inevitably be casualties in our team."
Lin Yi and Ika speak quietly since Jerry and Douglas are still resting nearby. They aren't intentionally hiding anything; they just need to find a good way to inform everyone.
"Reagan doesn't know what he's doing! Last time he burned down the whole city just to kill those Zombies; now he's actually bringing them here to attack us!" Ika vents her frustration towards Reagan upon hearing Lin Yi's analysis.
"Burning down the city? Yes, we can use fire too!" A spark of inspiration flashes in Lin Yi's mind as he comes up with an idea.
The inner city was not very large, and if a fire broke out inside, it could turn many Zombies to ash. Lin Yi felt a surge of hope at the thought. However, where could he find enough fuel? It wasn't something that could just be conjured up!
At that moment, Slo suddenly ran over to Lin Yi. Seeing Slo was like a glutton spotting a feast; Lin Yi placed his hands on Slo's shoulders and grinned like a child. "I have an idea! We can throw a large amount of fuel into the city and burn them all!"
Slo had originally intended to ask Lin Yi what to do, but upon hearing this suggestion, he raised an eyebrow. It was indeed a good idea worth trying!
"But how do we get the fuel in there?" Slo pondered further, as fuel wouldn't walk itself in!
Lin Yi scratched his head, feeling a bit frustrated. "Don't you have a helicopter?"
"You have to understand, when you called for me to support you, I told you to hold on. The control of the helicopter is in the inner city; I don't have the authority to mobilize it!" Slo looked at Lin Yi with an innocent expression, as if he had suffered a great injustice.
Wu Hao had also retreated to the second line for a rest and happened to catch sight of Slo's innocent face. He felt something was off, but that feeling vanished before he could grasp it.
"Alright, please go find enough fuel first. I'll figure something out!" Lin Yi was determined not to give up on this idea; it might be the most effective way to deal with the Zombies on a large scale.
At this moment, he was also hoping that Douglas's mental energy would recover quickly. With his powerful mental strength capable of controlling an aircraft, getting enough fuel into the inner city should be no problem.
Slo glanced at Lin Yi and hurriedly left, as if he had suddenly thought of a brilliant idea.
Just as Lin Yi was about to continue slashing at some Zombies, Wu Hao pulled him aside and whispered, "I can't shake the feeling that Slo is hiding something from us. Shouldn't we be cautious?"
"Oh Lao Wu, your mind-reading skills are impressive, but everyone has their secrets. If you see through everything, you'll tire yourself out," Lin Yi patted Wu Hao on the shoulder and then headed towards Li Qiweng.
Li Qiweng was currently creating vacuum zones around her with absolute dominance. Even those fearless Zombies seemed intimidated by her; some were even too scared to approach. Lin Yi felt exhausted, covered in the stench of blood and guts that clung to him. Yet he still needed to exert himself; not only was he the leader of this team, but he was also Li Qiweng's fiancé. He couldn't just watch his beloved charge into danger.
Li Qiweng had been under medication for over an hour; her superhuman state wouldn't last much longer. This concern prompted Lin Yi to stay close to her, ready for any unforeseen circumstances.
When Li Qiweng saw Lin Yi approaching, she smiled warmly at him. The gloom that had weighed on Lin Yi's heart melted away instantly with her smile; he felt all the tenderness within it. At that moment, what more could he wish for? To be with the one he loved most—even if the road ahead was fraught with thorns—what was there to fear?
Lin Yi didn't wait long before seeing Slo jump down from a vehicle, his face brimming with excitement. Following him were several young men carrying metal boxes in their hands. After getting out of the vehicle, Slo waved at Lin Yi, signaling him to come over.
With questions swirling in his mind and despite being dizzy from the stench of Zombie blood, Lin Yi ran over without hesitation.
“Ha ha, I found a model helicopter association, and their model helicopters can transport quite a bit of fuel into the city!” Slo said, pointing at the dozen or so people around him, all wearing broad smiles.
Lin Yi nodded, signaling that there was no time to waste and they needed to act quickly. The teenagers, looking around seventeen or eighteen, watched Lin Yi with serious expressions on their faces. The solemnity in their eyes told Lin Yi that they were not just here for the spectacle. Slo gave the order, and everyone began unloading fuel and model helicopters from the vehicles.
“Take off!” commanded a boy who seemed to be the leader. All the kids operated their beloved “warplanes” with serious faces. Although this was a one-way mission, they showed no signs of regret. A few of them were even a bit excited, their hands trembling as they controlled the flight consoles.
These model helicopters were of the largest size, with a carrying capacity of about twenty-five kilograms. Each helicopter was equipped with a new type of solid flammable fuel that, once ignited, would unleash fierce flames that were difficult to extinguish.
Watching the “warplanes” soar rapidly into the sky, Lin Yi couldn't contain his excitement.
Everything went smoothly; these model helicopters did not attract the attention of the zombies, or perhaps their intelligence simply couldn't comprehend the purpose of those things.
The operation platform had screens connected to cameras on the helicopters, allowing each model to find its target location precisely. After nearly an hour of heavy weapon attacks, many areas in the inner city were still ablaze, though the flames were not very large yet. After several barrels of flammable materials were dropped, half of those areas instantly erupted into roaring fires!
However, this was still not enough. Lin Yi saw that Douglas had recovered quite a bit and walked over to him to briefly explain the situation. Douglas hesitated for just a moment before agreeing to Lin Yi's proposal.
Larger barrels of oil were hurled into the inner city by Douglas with wild abandon, and under the influence of the new fuel, the flames grew even fiercer. The licking tongues of fire seemed ready to consume the entire city, reaching higher and higher.
Burn, fury! Victory was within reach!
