Bad Luck is a terrifying thing that everyone fears and tries to avoid, yet when it comes, it seems no one can stop it. It's important to face everything with a positive attitude, but when things actually happen, who can truly handle them well?
As they watched the Giant Zombie frantically pounding on the electric fence, a wave of fear swept over the crowd. The Heavy Machine Gun fired wildly, but at that moment, everyone realized there were too many Zombies; they had emerged from underground. As the saying goes, it's not the strength of the Zombies that is frightening, but their cunning. Clearly, these Zombies did not appear out of nowhere; they had been quietly lying in wait here all along, ready to launch their attack the moment construction was nearly complete and everyone let their guard down.
It was evident that they had succeeded, and it seemed like fate was assisting them by cutting off the power to the once formidable electric fence.
"Slo! We have a crisis here; the electric fence is down, and a large number of Giant Zombies are attacking!" Lin Yi thought of those above him and, adhering to the principle of utilizing everything at his disposal, quickly reported his predicament.
Slo responded promptly, but simply: hold your ground and await rescue!
"Another damn wait for rescue!" Witerson II spat on the ground and then raised his gun to shoot wildly at the nearest Zombie.
Lin Yi felt a surge of panic. Aside from the Heavy Machine Gun's fire, the Leopard tanks were currently ineffective. From another perspective, the Leopards could not fire their cannons now. The Zombies were getting closer; if they chose to fire directly, the electric fence would be breached, bringing them closer to being food. Often, Leopards served merely as a deterrent; after all, the Zombie horde had never been as frenzied as it was today!
The electric fence was being torn apart by those Giant Zombies, creating larger gaps. They could burst through at any moment, and whether these people could withstand that was uncertain. Here, aside from the military, there were Engineers operating various construction machines. Under normal circumstances with personnel shortages, professional construction workers should have been available for support. However, during the last Zombie attack incident, fear had thrown the workers into chaos, leading to a complete collapse in organization and effective resistance. Professional soldiers generally possess stronger psychological resilience than ordinary people when facing life-and-death situations.
"Hiss~" Not far from Lin Yi, a massive gap had been torn in the electric fence by a Zombie; it could enter at any moment.
The Machine Gunner noticed the situation and redirected heavy fire towards that area. Although Giant Zombies were much stronger than regular Zombies, under the relentless assault of steel storm firepower, they were reduced to piles of rotten flesh.
However, things were never that simple. The once resilient Steel Wire Netting was torn open again by another Zombie. It was coming in; it was about to start feeding on humans!
The Machine Gunner aimed at the target again, but this time luck was not on their side because this Zombie had already charged in! Its quick movements showcased its speed against the cumbersome Heavy Machine Gun. Due to its lack of mobility, several shots from the Heavy Machine Gun were thwarted by this Zombie.
Li Qiweng and Pachy drew their blades, waving their hands at the machine gun team to signal them not to interfere with the Zombie. They would handle it together.
The commander of the defense unit was no fool. As soon as the first breach appeared, he immediately called for a tank to start firing at that gap. The Zombies attempting to enter were turned into mush by the tank's cannon. However, the firing rate of the tank could not keep up with the rapid assault of the Zombies, so it took three tanks to effectively seal off a single breach.
But when the second breach appeared, a third followed closely behind. It was as if Pandora's Box had been opened, unleashing demons from hell.
Li Qiweng and Pachy moved swiftly, flanking the Giant Zombie from both sides. Although the Giant Zombie was strong, it lacked combat skills. Li Qiweng used his agility to dodge the Zombie's massive hands while Pachy seized the opportunity to strike from the other side when the Zombie was distracted by Li Qiweng. As the saying goes, two fists cannot match four hands; what seemed difficult for an average person became manageable for Li Qiweng and Pachy. In mere seconds, they carved chunks of flesh from the Zombie's body at an astonishing pace. Within ten seconds, half of the Giant Zombie's body had been severed. Just as it prepared to strike Pachy with its remaining hand in anger, Li Qiweng swiftly swung his blade and severed its neck.
The crowd barely had time to admire Li Qiweng and Pachy's impressive combat skills before they turned their attention back to the breaches behind them, firing frantically to prevent further incursions.
At this moment, no one had any intention of giving up; their construction efforts represented a true lifeline. If they were breached by Zombies now, all their previous efforts would be in vain, and their lives would be forfeit as well. Thus, there was no need for the commander to rally them; everyone was fighting with all their might.
However, this was still not enough; the situation grew increasingly dire. It seemed that all the Giant Zombies had gathered here, launching relentless attacks. Perhaps they understood that once their life channel was completed, they would find it difficult to feast on humans again. Both sides were frantic—the Zombies were recklessly attacking while Lin Yi and his team fought back fiercely. They were locked in a battle for survival; only those who emerged victorious would earn the right to live.
As Zombies fell, casualties among the machine gun teams soon followed. During a moment of reloading, one team failed to coordinate properly with others, leaving a gap in their fire coverage that allowed a Zombie to seize the opportunity and attack. A Giant Zombie that successfully killed a member of a machine gun team carelessly tore off a man's thigh and began devouring it voraciously, sending shockwaves of terror through everyone present.
The Engineers were armed only with standard rifles, which proved ineffective against the ever-increasing number of Zombies. They drove their vehicles into the fray, crashing into Zombies that had breached the electric fence. The Giant Zombies possessed remarkable vitality; even when struck hard and sent flying, they did not lose their fighting spirit. Moreover, due to the confined space, the Engineers could not increase their speed or impact force.
More breaches appeared, some even connecting with each other. A large number of Zombies began pouring in; despite everyone shooting desperately as if their lives depended on it, they could not hold back the tide of advancing Zombies.
"Boom!" "Boom!" "Boom!" The sound of massive explosions echoed along both sides of the corridor. Since machine guns could no longer withstand the onslaught, it was time to resort to grenades.
There were still plenty of grenades available; after all, there had been an electric fence serving as a powerful first line of defense initially. As long as Giant Zombies approached, these potent individual weapons could be highly effective. Now that the Zombies had breached that defense and even heavy machine guns could not hold them back any longer, it was time to use grenades instead.
The deafening sound of explosions, accompanied by shockwaves, made Lin Yi feel as if his ears were about to burst. His mouth was filled with mud, yet he had to constantly issue commands. Fortunately, Blood Envoy had extensive combat experience and maintained effective resistance, preventing the Zombies from getting too close. Soft things fear hard things, and hard things fear those who are reckless; these Zombies were certainly reckless. Of course, medically speaking, these decayed beings were already dead. No matter how skilled Lin Yi and his team were, they still hoped to avoid close combat with the Zombies.
Lin Yi desperately called out to Slo through the communicator, but the response was vague; it seemed that Slo was also facing some trouble on his end.
Relying on others is never as reliable as relying on oneself—this was a truth that rang especially clear in this life-and-death moment. Lin Yi could not afford to entrust the lives of his team entirely to an officer who only understood one thing.
Human strength has its limits, and ammunition can run out. Although everyone was fighting desperately at this moment, the horde of Zombies was growing larger. Even though the incoming ones were mostly ordinary Zombies, their sheer numbers turned into a disaster.
Thud thud thud~ With a series of crashing sounds, everyone's hearts sank further. The nearby electric fence had been nearly destroyed by the Zombies; they could charge in at any moment and devour them.
Of course, their desperate resistance was not without effect; a significant number of Giant Zombies had already been eliminated. The crowded construction site was now piled high with severed limbs and flesh, almost reaching waist height. The incoming Zombies trampled over the black and red remains as they entered, and a foul stench permeated every corner of the battlefield.
The Giant Zombies were being dealt with by Li Qiweng and Pachy. Lin Yi's team lacked heavy weaponry; in terms of manpower, only Li Qiweng and Pachy had the strength to fight back. Bai, along with Flower Cannon, Jiao Jiao, and Hai, formed another resistance group to take down the attacking Zombies. Witerson II also learned from Pachy to swing a large blade against the Giant Zombies, while others had to protect him in the vicinity. Jerry's abilities were quite reliable; whenever he found an opening, he could control a Zombie. In just half an hour of fighting, he had managed to control two of them, making his combat effectiveness quite high. As for Douglas, under Wu Hao's guidance, his mental strength grew stronger and more adept. He acted like a firefighter on the battlefield; wherever support faltered, he concentrated his mental energy to throw attacking Zombies into the air. Ika and Jones served as mobile observers on the battlefield, keeping an eye out for defensive gaps.
At this moment, the defense forces urgently regrouped at the unfinished entrance to resist the Zombies. Regardless of the circumstances, their bottom line was that they could not allow these Zombies to destroy the fruits of their labor over the past few days.
For survival, everyone fought desperately!
