For thousands of years, people have pursued the feeling of flight, a sense of freedom that seems to transcend the physical to touch the soul. Lin Yi's team now felt an unprecedented sense of liberation, free from the worry of being chased by Zombies.
The airplane flew smoothly over a country that had been thrown into chaos by Zombies, and they had no time to concern themselves with this solitary traveler in the sky. Many were already resting; Witerson II was even playing cards with a few comrades. Although the space was cramped, everyone enjoyed a brief moment of comfort.
As the leader of the team, Lin Yi had to consider more pressing matters.
He had always been curious about Douglas, and he never expected that at the last moment, it would be Douglas who saved the entire team. The one who understood everything best was Wu Hao, but he remained silent, seemingly waiting for Lin Yi to ask. Lin Yi sighed and moved a few steps closer to Wu Hao.
"What’s going on with Douglas?" Lin Yi sipped his coffee to warm himself; the airplane's heating system seemed inadequate.
"I've known for a long time. Our Eight Departments is just that kind of organization, gathering individuals with special abilities from across the country and even the world. Douglas is one of those individuals with special abilities, but he hasn’t realized it yet!"
"Special abilities?"
"Yes! Some people can see through walls, some have bodies as hard as iron, and others can emit a kind of death ray. There are also those with mental abilities; their minds can transform into powerful attacks against others." Wu Hao spoke excitedly about these abilities; perhaps for him, Douglas was truly one of his kind.
"It seems that Douglas's arrival has indeed given us a significant advantage. I just wonder if we will encounter more people like him in the future." Lin Yi's face lit up with hope; if they could meet more Ability Users in this chaotic world, they would have better chances of survival.
"Actually, it seems there is an organization for Ability Users, but I haven't gained membership yet, so I don't know much about them." Wu Hao hesitated for a moment before speaking up; even if he did share this information, Lin Yi wouldn't be able to find those people.
Although Lin Yi was filled with anticipation, he understood that some things couldn't be forced. He smiled lightly and then looked meaningfully at Jones not far away, primarily focusing on Douglas's hesitant expression beside her.
Douglas's situation became clearer; he and Jones were from the same school—specifically, he was Jones's junior. During orientation for new students, it was Jones who welcomed Douglas and his peers. According to Douglas, he fell for the lively and stunning Jones at first sight but found himself out of luck in love. After three years of pursuing her without success, now seeing his beloved during this crisis made him forget all his other troubles.
Wu Hao pieced together these details during his conversations with Douglas. Although Douglas possessed strong mental power, he didn't know how to utilize it. As someone who had practiced mind-reading for many years, Wu Hao effortlessly grasped Douglas's basic situation.
"Wow, what a beautiful lake! I didn't expect Africa to have such stunning waters," Ika exclaimed as she gazed out the window at a lake that sparkled like emeralds against the sky.
"If I'm not mistaken, this should be Lake Turkana," Gal said, gazing nostalgically at the water below as the plane flew over it, lost in a brief memory.
"If we keep flying past Lake Turkana, we'll enter Ethiopia. There's a wildlife reserve there that I've always wanted to see," the young Medic Ike chimed in, his face glowing with a sense of longing as if he knew this place well.
"Kid, I didn't expect you to know more than I do!" Witerson II exclaimed, playfully patting Aik on the head with a chuckle after losing several rounds of their card game.
Aik felt a bit embarrassed and replied, "I've told you before, Captain. I love photographing animals, so I've picked up some geographical knowledge along the way."
Everyone here had their own dreams, and for various reasons, they had come together. Their purpose was simple: to survive or to live a little longer.
"Captain Lin!" Pachy seemed to struggle with the new title for Lin Yi, finding it somewhat awkward to say.
"What's wrong, Captain Patch?" The address was a bit confusing, but since Pachy was Li Qiweng's captain, he felt it was respectful not to call anyone by their first name directly.
"The plane is about to run out of fuel; I need to make an emergency landing on the water surface," Pachy stated calmly.
The others felt a chill run down their spines at the news. Running out of fuel meant immense danger!
"Captain Patch, you’re not joking, are you?" Lin Yi's previously good mood plummeted as if he had fallen into an ice cellar. They had managed to avoid being eaten by zombies only to crash instead.
"Everyone stay calm; below us is a vast expanse of water. I'm confident we can land safely," Pachy assured them as he began to lower the nose of the plane, heading swiftly toward the lake.
"Everyone, fasten your seatbelts; it might get bumpy!" Li Qiweng, as Pachy's co-pilot, took on the responsibility of reminding everyone to prepare for safety.
The initially panicked group quickly returned to their seats and gripped the armrests tightly at Li Qiweng's prompt. However, the plane did not shake as violently as they had imagined; it was only during the final moments before hitting the water that they felt a dull thud that nearly jolted them from their seats.
After a chorus of shouts from the crowd, the plane gradually came to a stop from its taxiing state, and everyone let out a long sigh of relief. However, once their emotions stabilized, they realized that many of their clothes were soaked from the water that had seeped in. The temperature in January was already low, and after the moment of panic, everyone began to shiver.
At this point, the plane was still over a thousand meters away from the shore, and the area near the shore was uninhabited, leaving them without anyone to help them reach safety.
“Douglas, focus all your energy on pushing the plane to the shore,” Wu Hao said as he noticed Douglas looking bewildered and quickly went over to give him a pat.
Anyone who could attend university in the capital was certainly not foolish. Although they had not yet adapted to their superpowers, they quickly learned how to utilize them.
Douglas closed his eyes while Wu Hao continuously encouraged him from the side.
“Thud~”
The plane shifted slightly, and then, amidst everyone's hopeful gazes, it slowly began to move toward the shore on its own. The others dared not disturb him; they simply stared intently at the increasingly closer shoreline.
A distance of one thousand meters is neither too close nor too far. Under Douglas's mental control, no one noticed how much time had passed; they only knew that the plane had been moved to the shore.
Once they reached land, Lin Yi immediately assigned tasks. Those skilled with firearms were sent to hunt, those who could fish went down to the river to catch fish, and those without much ability were tasked with gathering firewood. Naturally, Lin Yi ended up being assigned to the honorable task of collecting firewood.
The lake area was surrounded by several volcanoes; however, according to Aik, these were all dormant. Thanks to a thick layer of fertile soil formed by volcanic ash, Lin Yi and the others found it easy to gather dead wood. When there was no fighting, Li Qiweng generally followed Lin Yi wherever he went, willingly becoming one of those less capable individuals.
No one dared to disturb the couple of Lin Yi and Li Qiweng; with such a vast area around them, there was no need for anyone to play the third wheel.
Turkana Lake was rich in fish resources, so those responsible for fishing quickly returned with full nets—enough for each person to have a meal. Surprisingly, those hunting also managed to catch an antelope. While this act could be considered poaching under normal circumstances, in their current precarious situation, no one cared.
Gathering firewood was the simplest task; however, because of this simplicity, they collected a substantial amount. If everyone planned to rest here for the night, there would be more than enough firewood.
Everything was ready, but they were still missing the final touch. Lin Yi couldn't recall who could cook, as grilling was quite a skill. In the end, Jiao Jiao and Hai Mao volunteered, and soon Ika also joined in to grill food herself. Meanwhile, the others used their military knives to clean the fish and antelope, preparing for a feast.
Turkana Lake was a saline lake, so they didn't need to worry about salt, and many people had spices packed in their backpacks. The six grills took turns cooking, and before long, fragrant Tilapia began to come off the grill.
Lin Yi eagerly devoured the first fish; it had been a long time since he had eaten anything hot, and he was starving. The others just smiled and helped themselves while Ika and the others continued grilling.
Meal times were always delightful, and by the time everything was finished, it was already afternoon. The group, having not rested well, didn’t want to go anywhere else; they sat in a circle leaning against their backpacks, enjoying the warmth of the fire.
As everyone began to relax, suddenly, a loud "thud thud thud" echoed from the nearby plane.
The increasingly loud crashing sounds quickly startled everyone awake. Reluctantly, they fell back into a defensive formation.
"What’s happening?" Lin Yi hurriedly looked toward the source of the noise. The plane that had been still moments ago seemed to be shaking violently as if it were about to be lifted off the ground.
No one could explain what was happening. If there were zombies around, they would have rushed over to attack by now. All they heard was noise without seeing anything; everyone felt lost in confusion. The fear of the unknown was the most terrifying; you didn’t know what was troubling you, yet you were acutely aware of its presence.
“Douglas, can you move the plane?” Lin Yi didn’t want to take any risks. Since there was someone with strong psychic powers nearby, why not let him show his skills?
“Captain, I’m afraid I can’t right now. I can’t concentrate at all; I think I’ve exhausted my energy from moving the plane earlier,” Douglas replied weakly, clearly exhausted.
“Guys, let’s go check it out together,” Lin Yi said, mustering his courage to investigate.
Li Qiweng naturally took the lead, and with the women joining in, everyone else followed suit. They all understood that there was strength in numbers.
When they were still a few meters away from the water's edge, Lin Yi called for everyone to stop and then fired a few shots at the water's surface. The plane that had been making so much noise suddenly fell silent.
At that moment, Lin Yi was feeling quite pleased with himself, preparing to retreat when suddenly, with a loud splash, a creature around seven or eight meters long burst forth from the water.
"Open fire!" Lin Yi reacted quickly, raising his gun and starting to shoot. However, he despaired as he realized that the creature seemed to ignore him completely, getting closer and closer, about to reach the shore.
"What kind of monster is this? It's even bigger than a Giant Zombie!"
Everyone was unable to see what was approaching due to the reflection of the water's surface.
"Run! It's a crocodile swarm from Turkana Lake; they act collectively!" Aik suddenly seemed to remember something, shouting as he turned and fled.
Perhaps to confirm Aik's words, several more crocodiles soon crawled out of the lake. At this point, staying put would mean becoming dinner for the crocodiles.
Lin Yi turned back for one last look and nearly fell over in shock. One after another, crocodiles were rapidly climbing onto the shore from the lake, as if they wouldn't be satisfied until they had killed every one of them.
If they continued to flee blindly, they would surely be caught and eaten by the crocodiles. Although bullets weren't powerful enough to kill a crocodile outright, sheer numbers could overwhelm even an elephant. At that moment, Jimmy, clutching a machine gun, stood out as he desperately shot at these aquatic predators.
Just when everyone was running in a panic, they suddenly heard an inexplicable chorus of shouts, as if many people were calling out in unison. The sound sent chills down their spines, reminiscent of hungry ghosts in hell invoking an evil deity.
Could it be that their souls would be lost here today? Many were thinking just that at this moment.
