As night fell, the twinkling stars scattered their light across the silent earth, evoking a sense of inexplicable sorrow. Lin Yi led the way, with Wu Hao supporting the big boy closely behind. The others walked cautiously, alert to their surroundings. Throughout the short journey, Wu Hao maintained a beaming smile, as if he had stumbled upon a treasure. 0

“Douglas!” As everyone returned to the parking spot, Jones suddenly called out, covering his mouth in disbelief. 0

The boy referred to as Douglas lifted his head at the sound of Jones's voice, tears streaming down his face as he choked back words. 0

Jones was much better than the tearful Douglas; he stepped forward to support him and asked with genuine concern, “Where are the other students and teachers?” 0

At this question, Douglas, who had merely been sobbing before, suddenly burst into tears and clung to Jones. The emotional turmoil left Lin Yi and the others anxiously waiting nearby. 0

It was uncertain whether it was Jones's comforting words that had an effect or if Douglas finally managed to regain some composure. 0

“They... they were all eaten!” Though his voice still trembled with sobs, everyone understood his distressing message clearly. 0

Jones, who had begun to feel a bit better, fell silent again. Although she had already guessed this outcome to some extent, it was still hard for her to accept when faced with the harsh reality. After all, people are not mere grass or wood; who can be devoid of feelings? 0

“Let’s rest for a bit. We can discuss things later,” Lin Yi said. He wanted to comfort this poor soul who was crying uncontrollably, but with darkness approaching quickly, it was too dangerous to linger in such an open area. 0

Captain Lin's words left no room for dissent. After packing up their belongings, they left the vehicle and headed towards the inn they had found not long ago. 0

While everyone could rest, security measures still needed to be taken. They all gathered on the second floor to rest, while some were assigned to guard the main entrance on the first floor and others were tasked with observation from the rooftop. Fortunately, they had several night vision goggles at their disposal, alleviating concerns about visibility in the distance. 0

Lin Yi took on the role of one of the first night watchmen and went up to the rooftop with Witerson II. Bai and Jiao Jiao also joined them; monitoring all four directions from the rooftop was crucial for defense and would provide everyone with more time to react to potential dangers. On the first floor, Gal led a few veterans in securing their position. This kind of work was familiar to most of them—except for Lin Yi, who had never done anything like this before. 0

Li Qiweng had initially promised Lin Yi that he would go rest first but found himself unable to sleep. Frustrated, he trudged upstairs to find Lin Yi. 0

"Yun, aren't you going to rest?" Lin Yi, while fiddling with the night vision goggles, recognized the footsteps and knew it was Li Qiweng. After so many years of partnership, their understanding was no joke. 0

Li Qiweng paused behind Lin Yi before softly saying, "I suddenly missed you." 0

"Heh, after all these years, you're still being so cheesy." Lin Yi waved his hand behind him, signaling Li Qiweng to come closer. 0

"Hmph, who are you calling old married couple? You need to propose to me at least three times before I even consider saying yes," Li Qiweng replied as she walked over to Lin Yi and wrapped her arms around his slightly pudgy waist from behind. 0

Lin Yi's face turned red, not because Li Qiweng was hugging him, but because everyone around them, including Witerson II, had heard her words. As the leader of the team, he wanted to maintain some dignity in front of them. 0

"Yun, that's a bit cruel, isn't it? Three proposals!" Lin Yi turned his head and lowered his voice as much as possible. However, he could clearly see Witerson II shaking with suppressed laughter not far away. 0

"Let me have some fun!" Li Qiweng ignored Lin Yi's complaints and gently pushed him aside while picking up the night vision goggles to observe the situation ahead. 0

Lin Yi had been enjoying himself until Li Qiweng pushed him away, feeling a bit resentful. But he "dared not" confront her about it and instead tried to coax her from behind. Of course, he had to keep his voice low. 0

Unfortunately, Li Qiweng completely disregarded Lin Yi and continued observing ahead with the night vision goggles. 0

"I found something amazing!" Li Qiweng suddenly turned around with excitement, bouncing as she hugged Lin Yi. 0

Lin Yi nearly got dizzy from her enthusiasm and took a moment to calm her down. Jiao Jiao and Witerson II considered coming over to see what was happening but ultimately held back. Lin Yi picked up the night vision goggles himself and looked in the direction Li Qiweng had indicated. After a while, he vaguely spotted a massive white object. 0

"What is that?" Lin Yi asked in confusion. 0

"What’s wrong? Can’t you see the plane?" Li Qiweng said, a bit frustrated. 0

"What good is a plane?" For Lin Yi, the idea of a plane was beyond his consideration. 0

"We need to escape. Isn’t a plane faster and safer?" 0

It was only then that Lin Yi realized he had been thinking about escaping all along, but when the fastest method finally presented itself, he had forgotten about it. 0

"But who can fly a plane? Oh, no, who can pilot it?" Lin Yi returned to the harsh reality. 0

Li Qiweng snapped back, "Don’t you know that all of us are exceptionally talented? Do you really think you, Captain Lin, need to worry about flying a plane?" 0

"How would I know you could fly a plane?" Lin Yi replied, looking bewildered. 0

"Pachy can!" Li Qiweng shot Lin Yi an annoyed glance before stomping off. 0

Once Li Qiweng disappeared from sight, Witerson II couldn’t help but laugh, and even Bai, who usually maintained a serious demeanor, wore a knowing smile. 0

"Alright, everyone, let’s continue observing. We can rest in the early hours when someone comes to relieve us," Lin Yi said, not wanting to explain further since it was a family matter. 0

This was merely an interlude; now that they could find a plane, their chances of escape were significantly greater. Everyone felt relieved and diligently fulfilled their responsibilities. However, just three or four hours later, Flower Cannon and Hai came to take over for Jiao Jiao and Bai. At this point, there was still an hour left until midnight. 0

With envious eyes on Bai leading Jiao Jiao downstairs, Lin Yi sighed. He hadn’t rested well in recent days either, but with three more hours until the shift change, he had no choice but to endure. 0

As Lin Yi waited with growing anticipation, Pachy and Jimmy, armed with a machine gun, finally arrived. Lin Yi felt as if his eyelids were about to engage in a fierce battle of their own; he was so exhausted that his mind had gone completely blank. 0

“Wait!” Hai suddenly shouted, breaking the silence. 0

Lin Yi jumped in surprise and nervously asked, “What’s going on?” 0

“I see several Zombies coming this way!” Hai's voice trembled, clearly shaken by the sight. 0

Upon hearing about the Zombies, Jimmy rushed over and indeed spotted a few Zombies wandering toward them along the main street. Jimmy, a big guy with an impulsive nature, immediately began firing his machine gun at the approaching Zombies. However, the distance was too great and the lighting poor, rendering his shots ineffective. 0

At that moment, Lin Yi knew he couldn’t afford to sleep anymore. He quickly contacted Gal and the others downstairs to inform them that Zombies were on their way. Just as they were about to rush down for a rescue, Flower Cannon suddenly shouted in panic. 0

“Run! Run! A lot of Zombies are closing in, and there’s a Giant Zombie!!!” Flower Cannon stuttered before preparing to flee downstairs. 0

The others were thrown into a frenzy by Flower Cannon's alarm. Just how many Zombies were there to cause such a panic? Lin Yi needed to assess the situation and determine how many Zombies were approaching and how far away they were. 0

“There’s no end in sight; it’s definitely more than what we saw at Mombasa Base—endless. They’re about two kilometers away from us, but those Giant Zombies move fast!” Flower Cannon hurriedly explained, trying to calm himself down. 0

Lin Yi felt overwhelmed; they were going to have to run for their lives again, and he hadn’t even had a chance to rest! 0

In the twelve-story building, they practically slid down the stairs and reached the ground floor in just a minute. By then, everyone had gathered and packed their belongings. 0

“Alright, this is urgent. There’s no time to go back for that vehicle. About two thousand meters away are countless Zombies and incredibly strong Giant Zombies. There’s a plane located at our twelve o'clock position; whether we can escape depends on whether we can get past these Zombies!” 0

Lin Yi urgently informed everyone of the situation, but some of them, perhaps still half-asleep, looked at him in confusion. 0

"Come on, if we don't run now, we'll end up as zombies!" Lin Yi couldn't help but shout. These people were indeed too exhausted; even hearing that zombies were approaching didn't elicit much of a reaction from them. 0

Leading the way, Lin Yi started to run. The journey was long, and everyone was burdened. Ahead lay only darkness, mirroring their current predicament, which made fleeing quite difficult. 0

Gathering all the light they could muster, the group ran towards the direction of twelve o'clock, which was behind the hotel. Just when they had covered half the distance to the plane, a loud noise erupted from behind. 0

"Not good! A Giant Zombie is right on our tail!" Witerson shouted from the back. 0

Lin Yi glanced at Li Qiweng and nodded before taking another dose of the Potential Gene Drug. He then stepped back and began to approach the Giant Zombie, which was now less than ten meters away. 0

A dazzling light flashed as Lin Yi summoned a death-defying resolve and swung his blade, severing the Giant Zombie's neck. However, the Giant Zombie was not so easily dispatched. Even with his body’s potential fully activated by the drug, he felt a painful ache in his arm after that strike. But he couldn't afford to dwell on it; he noticed that the team had already moved several steps ahead while three more Giant Zombies were closing in behind them. 0

This was it! 0

That was Lin Yi's only thought. Using the momentum from his run, he decisively swung his blade again, decapitating one of the zombies. Yet at that moment, despite having been able to kill ordinary zombies in an instant before, he suddenly felt utterly drained. 0

Only two left! Lin Yi had no choice but to fight for his teammates. 0

This time, Lin Yi played it smart; he aimed for one zombie's leg with a single strike while managing to slice another's neck down to its chest cavity. The short-legged zombie collapsed immediately, its speed drastically reduced. However, the one Lin Yi had struck in the chest suddenly spun around and flung him away along with his weapon. 0

Ignoring the pain coursing through him, Lin Yi saw that everyone else had already boarded the plane. There was no need for him to stay behind and fight anymore. More zombies were rushing toward him with loud cries; if he didn't leave now, it would be a dead end for him. 0

Lin Yi's speed was impressive; just as the others entered the cabin, he had already leaped up. The plane had started and was beginning to ascend. 0

But at that moment, the aircraft jolted violently, as if something heavy had grabbed hold of it. 0

"Oh no!" Lin Yi's heart sank as he realized that the Zombie he had failed to kill was clinging to the wheels of the landing gear. 0

“Douglas, focus! Get rid of that Zombie!” Wu Hao shouted at Douglas. 0

Douglas closed his eyes, beads of sweat forming on his forehead. In an instant, the Giant Zombie seemed to lose all weight and flew backward, while Douglas collapsed to the ground, seemingly exhausted. 0

Finally, the plane took off just as more Zombies approached. 0

After the side effects of the Gene Drug wore off completely, Lin Yi finally woke up. Looking out at the natural scenery outside the plane, he couldn't help but marvel at nature's craftsmanship, which could create such magnificent sights. In front of the wonders of nature, humans truly felt insignificant. 0

"Where are we now?" Lin Yi asked slowly. 0

"The Great Rift Valley. We are flying above it," Li Qiweng replied, handing Lin Yi a cup of freshly brewed coffee. 0
