The night deepened, and the outside world remained brightly lit.
Inside the barracks, there was a profound silence. For everyone present, living was not easy, and living well was even more difficult. Now that they could finally enjoy a brief moment of peace, why let trivial matters disturb them? Perhaps being passive wasn't entirely wrong; after all, no one was an omnipotent deity capable of solving every problem.
"I've decided to stay and rebuild the Witerson Combat Camp. This has been my father's lifelong work, and I don't want to see it destroyed on my watch."
Witerson II remained silent for a long time before ultimately resolving to stay. No matter what, this was his homeland, and unless absolutely necessary, he had no desire to wander aimlessly.
"I respect your decision." Lin Yi knew it was futile to try to stop him; he merely expressed his lack of objection in a low voice. However, his hoarse tone revealed that he too was struggling internally.
A heavy silence enveloped the room. Silence might not resolve many issues, but the somber mood affected everyone present. It seemed that no one felt particularly good. Many lay on their beds staring at the ceiling, as if their souls had been lost. In just a few short days, everyone felt as though they had lived through a century; the changes were so overwhelming that they struggled to comprehend whether everything happening around them was real. Even Pachy, who had fallen into a deep sleep due to the Potential Gene Drug, furrowed his brow and tossed restlessly, seemingly unable to find even a moment of peace in his dreams.
"Since that's the case, let's all get some rest." Lin Yi thought about the uncertain path ahead. He had always tried hard to adapt to this society; regardless of the situation, resting well would give them the strength to think things through.
At least Lin Yi was still their Captain for now. Though it had only been a few days, his heroic act of single-handedly slaying hundreds of Zombies had left a deep impression on everyone. So when Lin Yi suggested resting, there were hardly any objections. Of course, there were still those who were not accustomed to following Lin Yi's lead.
"Darling, how about we go for a walk?" Li Qiweng suddenly blinked at Lin Yi, her lips pressed together with a slight smile.
Despite having spent so much time together, Lin Yi maintained the heart of someone in love with Li Qiweng. So when she playfully "teased" him like that, his heart raced uncontrollably.
"An order from my leader must be obeyed," Lin Yi replied with a salute directed at Li Qiweng.
The base buzzed with activity as everyone prepared for what lay ahead. The Zombie Crisis could erupt at any moment; no one knew what tomorrow would bring. They were the firefighters of this disaster; wherever Zombies appeared, they would rush to provide support. They might face total annihilation or return victorious—but what did it matter? Fulfilling their duty to protect their homeland came first; sacrifice or glory were secondary.
Lin Yi took Li Qiweng's delicate hand in his own, their fingers intertwining like an ordinary couple. There were no bustling shops around them, no relaxed atmosphere, not even a place for whispered conversations. But what did it matter? When hearts were united, anywhere could be the warmest and most romantic place.
"It’s been so long since we walked together like this," Li Qiweng said softly as they finally reached a quieter spot.
"Yes, it's always so busy, and when I come back at night, there's no time to be together," Lin Yi felt a pang of sadness in his heart, suddenly reminiscing about the days before work, when he was at least free.
"Now we can finally stick together. Isn't that great?" Li Qiweng looked up at Lin Yi, the distant light shining into her eyes, resembling countless twinkling stars, calm and filled with hope.
Lin Yi glanced at the military vehicles passing by in the distance, his expression dimming slightly. They could be together, but it came at such a high cost. This couple could only date in a place where iron and blood intertwined.
"Maybe things will be better in the future," Lin Yi didn't know how to express himself; he simply reached out to embrace Li Qiweng, lowering his head to inhale her fragrant hair. It was wonderful and heartwarming.
"I don't know what the future holds, but shouldn't we cherish this moment?" Li Qiweng tightened her hold on Lin Yi, closing her eyes and murmuring softly.
"Then should we do what we need to do?"
"What do you want?"
"Yes!"
"…"
"Hey, you bit my lip."
"Ah, we still need to communicate often; I'm not used to it anymore."
"…"
Just as dawn began to break, everyone was suddenly awakened by a commotion outside. Lin Yi was having a beautiful dream when he was jolted awake, momentarily confused about what was happening.
"Weng, what's wrong?" Lin Yi rubbed his swollen eyes and asked Li Qiweng, who was sitting on the edge of the bed.
"Get up and take a look; it seems something is happening outside." Li Qiweng stood up and stretched his limbs.
Outside, there was no need for much formality. Lin Yi had even slept in his coat last night. Seeing that Li Qiweng was already up, he rolled over and stood up as well, stretching his muscles.
Many people had already gotten up to see the commotion. Lin Yi and Li Qiweng stepped outside together, where a crowd had gathered. Everyone was holding a piece of paper, reading it with strange expressions on their faces. At that moment, Lin Yi noticed that flyers were scattered all over the ground; it seemed these flyers had caused the uproar. He picked one up casually and saw the bold words "Notice to Citizens" at the top, followed by a passage that left him stunned.
"What’s going on?" Lin Yi wondered aloud, unsure if he was asking himself or anyone else. He was genuinely taken aback by this notice. If this notice was true, then hadn’t they walked straight into a tiger's den, unable to escape?
"Captain, what should we do? President General Floman is a traitor; he brought these Zombies into our country!" Witerson II rushed over to Lin Yi, holding a flyer and looking bewildered.
Who would have thought that someone who had just saved him and was willing to help would suddenly be labeled a traitor? Witerson II felt completely lost; he didn’t know where to turn.
"I’m not sure about this either, but since the president has said so, General Floman must be problematic," Lin Yi concluded. In his mind, the president should be more reliable than this general.
"We can’t think like that! If he really is a traitor and those Zombies are indeed brought here by him, then why would he save us?" Witerson II still held some faith in Froeman; he didn’t want to believe that the kind old man who had shared visions of the future with him just yesterday could now be a traitor and a murderous psychopath.
Lin Yi didn’t have much emotional attachment to Froeman; after all, they had only met a few times and hadn’t communicated much. If he were indeed a traitor, then their group would be in danger. If he wasn’t a traitor, then they would soon be driven away by him. Whether the path ahead led to life or death remained uncertain.
"Everyone, please believe me, Froeman! If I were truly as this paper claims, what could I gain from it? Even if I were utterly depraved, I wouldn’t commit genocide against my own people! I believe our Mr. President must have been manipulated by real traitors to issue this notice against me. The enemy has schemes; they want us to turn against each other so they can reap the benefits!"
Not far away, Froeman stood atop an armored vehicle shouting through a megaphone, desperately trying to defend himself. He couldn’t understand how President Derman had regained his freedom and issued so many flyers calling for the nation to hunt him down. If this situation wasn’t clarified soon, he might very well be killed by his own soldiers.
Fortunately, after years of managing the Western Military District, although many soldiers glared at him fiercely, there were no riots—stability was more important than anything else at this moment. Froeman truly did not want to stir up trouble.
"I know you all will doubt me and think that the president would really issue such an announcement. I also understand that words are often inadequate; no matter how I explain myself, some will never believe me. I will prove my loyalty through action! I will stand on the front lines with all you brave comrades to resist the Zombie tide—even if it means sacrificing my life for our country!"
To stabilize the situation, Froeman had no choice but to go all in and make a military pledge in front of everyone. Otherwise, today might truly be his last day in this world.
" Witerson II, what should we do now?" Lin Yi listened to Froeman's words, unable to determine whether they were true or false. After all, in this world, anything was possible.
Witerson II lowered his head, seemingly deep in thought. Lin Yi could only wait patiently; at this moment, his opinion was merely a reference. The final decision still rested with Witerson II.
Li Qiweng had been holding onto Lin Yi's arm in silence, as if the situation had nothing to do with her.
Just as Froeman was preparing to continue defending himself, he suddenly received an urgent message. He glanced at it briefly and sighed, his voice trembling as he said, "We've discovered a significant number of Zombies within fifty to a hundred kilometers from us. I believe it's time for me to prove myself. I will personally lead a team to exterminate the Zombies and rescue our citizens!"
The soldiers present, upon hearing this news, no longer cared about the details. Froeman could arrange for personnel deployment; aside from the troops already dispatched to secure important towns, there weren't many left in the camp. He called in staff from the operations department to quickly plan and then left the barracks to join Lin Yi and the others.
" Witerson II, come with me! Your experience can help me greatly," Froeman stated directly.
"General, I think I should stay with our Captain," Witerson II replied, seemingly making a difficult decision. Afterward, he lowered his head in pain. Deep down, he had wanted to work with Froeman, but the recent deception in Mombasa made him doubt the trustworthiness of those around him. Rather than be deceived by his own countrymen and elders, he preferred to stick with Lin Yi.
"Since you've made your decision, I'll take my leave. I hope we can see each other alive again," Froeman said decisively. Seeing that Witerson II had made up his mind, he did not press further and left.
After replenishing their ammunition at the military camp, Froeman provided Lin Yi's group with two Military Vehicles. Amidst the swirling dust, they set off on a new journey.
