Lin Yi did not want to die, at least not before he and Li Qiweng had truly become a couple. It would be too unfair. However, as he watched the towering Zombie approach, he felt as if he were sinking into an ocean of Zombies, struggling in vain against the inevitable.
Before God truly lets a person fall into despair, He often gives them a glimmer of hope. At least they still had an aircraft. Although the current situation did not guarantee their escape, hope was still within reach. The takeoff of a large plane required a process, and with chaos reigning at the scene, taking off had become a tricky problem. Everyone could only run for their lives, while the armored vehicles could only buy them a little time. To really leave, they would have to rely on God's will.
In the face of life and death, everyone moved quickly. Before long, they reached a Military Aircraft. Unfortunately, it was already packed with people, making it difficult for the twenty of them to squeeze on board. General Floman was coordinating forces elsewhere to hold back the frenzied Zombies for a while longer. Meanwhile, the aircraft filled with soldiers was preparing for takeoff, seemingly indifferent to the comrades fighting outside.
Hearing the roar of the plane's engines, the armored troops who had been resisting the Zombies suddenly panicked. Ignoring their commander's desperate attempts to stop them, they drove their armored vehicles toward the aircraft. Froeman repeatedly tried to dissuade them through the communicator, but it had little effect. At that moment, everyone just wanted to find a way out of the Zombie Sea; nothing else mattered.
Seeing that the first plane was already taking off, Lin Yi realized that forcing their way on board would only get them shot by the panicking soldiers. Fortunately, several other planes were not far away. When Lin Yi saw one aircraft was full, he quickly led everyone toward another one. The second plane had significantly fewer people since the first one had already taken most of those at the airport. However, just as Lin Yi and his group boarded and the plane prepared for takeoff, a loud explosion erupted as a hole was blown into its left wing.
"What’s happening?"
"Damn it! Who's attacking us?"
The soldiers who thought they were about to escape were stunned by the sudden blast; the plane that was ready to take off came to an abrupt halt. The rear Cargo Door slowly opened since takeoff was no longer possible.
At that moment when the plane opened its door, Lin Yi noticed that the Zombie Army outside had surged into the airport due to a lack of strong resistance. Not far away, an armored vehicle's cannon was aimed directly at their aircraft; clearly, that explosion had been caused by this vehicle.
Everyone quickly understood what had happened: those armored vehicles were stationed outside to resist while others fled on planes. Perhaps they had once been good brothers and comrades in arms. But when faced with life and death and only caring about their own survival while ignoring others' fates, there was no need for mercy anymore. When those armored soldiers fighting against the Zombies saw that the plane was about to take off without them, they could no longer contain their anger; one armored vehicle directly shot down an aircraft.
At this point, two planes had already taken off while another one was hit in its Wing and could not fly. The last two were intercepted by armored vehicles. In this life-and-death situation, there was no need for armored soldiers to board planes anymore. The soldiers abandoned their vehicles and rushed toward the grounded aircraft.
It was urgent! This was clear to everyone. The Giant Zombie was closing in fast!
"What do we do? Captain! It's too late to get off this plane and reach the other two!" Witerson II exclaimed anxiously as he watched the farthest armored vehicle—the one that had shot down their plane's Wing—being surrounded by Zombies. He knew how formidable those Giant Zombies were; ordinary firearms could not kill them.
In an instant, that armored vehicle was overturned by several Giant Zombies working together. The armored soldiers hidden inside were thrown out in droves and were quickly overwhelmed by the incoming Zombies. In just a blink of an eye, these once-living men turned into white Skeletons before everyone's eyes.
Lin Yi glanced at Li Qiweng, then at Pachy. Without waiting for Lin Yi, Li Qiweng reached out to Pachy and said, "a1." Pachy nodded and handed Li Qiweng a few chocolate-wrapped items.
The other soldiers in the vehicle saw that the zombies were getting closer. Some were desperately firing their weapons, while others, unwilling to be trapped, tried to run towards the other two planes. However, even at a close distance, there was still a gap; despite their efforts to run, it was clear that the soldiers on the other two planes would not wait for them.
Li Qiweng handed Lin Yi two doses of the Potential Gene Drug and also passed him the Silver Soul. Their equipment had already been returned to them when they were released by those soldiers. At this moment, everyone began to strategize against the horde of zombies, but the endless waves of zombies made their firepower seem insignificant, like throwing a handful of sand into the ocean—there was no ripple at all.
"Everyone, please hold on! The Air Force Unit will be here to support us soon. Just a little longer, and victory will be ours!"
Froeman's voice suddenly came from above. Lin Yi looked up to see him sitting in an Armed Helicopter, using a loudspeaker to address those on the ground.
"When did this guy get up in a helicopter?" Flower Cannon muttered angrily while shooting.
"Don't forget he's the boss here. He takes off in a plane and then tells us to hold on!" Jiao Jiao remarked sarcastically from the side. It seemed that after seeing so many zombies, she was no longer afraid now that they had arrived.
"Flight Three, please secure the rear Cargo Door and taxi onto the Highway; you still have a chance to escape!" Perhaps seeing that those who could run had already been devoured by zombies on the road, Froeman advised Lin Yi's grounded plane to get moving while they still could.
Upon hearing Froeman's command, the rear Cargo Door of the plane closed just as the Giant Zombie approached.
Bang! Bang! Bang! The loud sounds continuously struck the fuselage. Everyone could feel the plane shaking; the power of this giant zombie was evident.
On the ground, everyone who could move had fled, leaving only Lin Yi's plane still stuck. Fortunately, large aircraft had strong engines; even if they couldn't take off, they could still surge forward quickly. However, with all the Giant Zombies focusing on them as their sole target, Lin Yi and his companions felt as if their plane might be overturned at any moment by the endless Zombie Army.
Through the windows of the fuselage, Lin Yi saw several Armed Helicopters desperately firing at the horde of zombies outside. While these ordinary zombies weren't much of a threat, it was those Giant Zombies that posed a significant danger with their immense strength and speed. The Armed Helicopters began targeting and eliminating those Giant Zombies.
To increase their hit rate, one helicopter suddenly flew at an extremely low altitude and started shooting at several Giant Zombies. This tactic proved effective; equipped with 0-caliber cannons, a few shots could blow apart a Giant Zombie's head. Perhaps encouraged by their success, other Armed Helicopters soon followed suit with low-altitude attacks.
At this moment, all the zombies could do was roar angrily at the helicopters. Lin Yi felt a sense of satisfaction; after being tormented by these zombies for so long, it was finally gratifying to see them suffer significant blows. Suddenly, Lin Yi noticed that one zombie that had been some distance away quickly closed in on two others. Before he could comprehend what was happening, he saw that zombie take a running leap onto the makeshift human spring formed by the other two zombies' arms.
All that could be seen was a blur, and suddenly, a Zombie was thrown onto a low-flying helicopter. The immense impact combined with the Zombie's weight caused the helicopter to lose balance and plummet. It had been hovering just ten meters above the ground for a low-altitude strike. The pilot didn't have enough time to react before the helicopter flipped over and crashed down.
With a loud "Boom," flames erupted everywhere. The once hopeful crowd fell into chaos; as the saying goes, it's not the Zombie's strength that is frightening, but its cunning. Even more terrifying was that many people didn’t immediately realize what was happening, and those Zombies wouldn’t give them a chance. In less than thirty seconds, another helicopter was dragged down from the sky by the Zombies.
The Armed Helicopter, which had been firing enthusiastically, finally reacted and quickly ascended to a higher altitude. With the threat from the Zombies somewhat diminished, they desperately began to intercept this helicopter that would never take off.
One Zombie after another lunged at the aircraft, gripping it tightly and trying to tear it apart.
It felt as if Death's Knell was ringing in everyone's ears, reminding them that death was near. The soldiers on board began to panic; death itself wasn’t terrifying, but the process of waiting for it was. They raised their guns, unsure of where to shoot amidst the cacophony of impacts all around them. They knew that the moment the helicopter came to a stop would be their moment of facing death.
"We all have Potential Gene Drugs," Pachy said, pulling Li Qiweng, Lin Yi, and Ikado close. "If it comes down to it, we’ll have to abandon everyone else and run."
"They're all my subordinates!" Lin Yi glanced nervously at those around them and felt a pang of reluctance.
"There’s no other way," Pachy replied, looking outside at the overwhelming horde of Zombies. "Even with A1, we might not make it out."
Suddenly, the helicopter that had been flying smoothly came to an abrupt halt.
Oh no! Everyone gasped in shock and sighed in despair.
