President Derman struggled to his feet, his hands trembling as he held the urgent briefing he had just received. "A large-scale Zombie attack has erupted in the capital. The Minister of Defense has led the relevant personnel to a safe area."
Upon hearing this news, General Hill, who had been staring at the ground, suddenly lifted his head. His eyes were scarlet, as if he were ready to devour someone at any moment.
"This must be a conspiracy! How could this happen? The defenses in Nairobi are so strong; how could Zombies breach them?" Hill shouted, disbelief etched on his face. Then, he covered his face in anguish and began to sob uncontrollably.
General Hill could not help but feel heartbroken; his relatives were in the capital. According to regulations, active-duty officers were not allowed to have their family members with them. However, every year, they had a certain amount of leave to spend time with their loved ones.
The others began to feel uneasy as Hill's cries echoed in the room. The capital being overrun by Zombies meant that their own relatives were also in danger. Although they firmly believed that the Minister of Defense would ensure their families' safety, nothing was ever guaranteed.
"Broadcast a message to the citizens, informing them of our current situation. Our predicament is not merely about encountering Zombies," President Derman said, lowering the briefing and looking at the junior officers present.
"Mr. President, that will only incite panic among the citizens!" The lean Lieutenant General discarded his cigar and spoke up to stop the president.
"What? General Froeman, do you intend to defy my orders?" President Derman's previously amiable demeanor was now replaced with fury, as if he would imprison Froeman on the spot if he continued to oppose him.
"I understand, Mr. President, but we can still control the situation. If we inform the citizens, it will lead to dissatisfaction and blame directed at us!" Froeman replied calmly, showing no signs of retreat despite the president's anger.
"Very well then, General. How do you propose we control the situation?" Derman seemed on the verge of exploding, causing General Hill's sorrowful demeanor to falter.
"Consolidate our defenses and apprehend all suspicious individuals. I have already dispatched one of my battalions to handle this matter," Froeman stated firmly, meeting President Derman's gaze without flinching.
"How is that possible? The area is too vast for such a sweep! In my capacity as president, I demand that a message be sent out!" Derman stood up, compelling those around him to begin recording his orders.
"Though you are president, we are not obliged to follow your commands," Froeman replied before turning to leave the room.
"Froeman, are you considering treason?" Derman shouted.
"Hahaha! Mr. President is unwell; I am now taking over defense operations in the eastern district!"
Without looking back, Froeman exited the room.
Li Qiweng knew that two fists could hardly match four hands. Seeing that the other party had no intention of attacking them for the time being, she refrained from showing any desperate attitude. It wasn't until Lin Yi, covered in dust, appeared before her that she merely gestured for him to stay calm, lest the enemy decide to wipe them out.
"What do we do now?" Lin Yi whispered to Li Qiweng. Their weapons had been confiscated, and their hands were cuffed, being escorted down the street by fifty fully armed soldiers. He secretly hoped that Li Qiweng still had some Potential Gene Drug on her; even if the enemy's numbers doubled, they could escape in an instant.
"Don't expect me to have any Gene Drug left," Li Qiweng shot him a glance, revealing his unspoken thoughts.
Lin Yi was taken aback; without their only hope, did that mean they were just waiting to die? However, seeing Li Qiweng's relaxed demeanor reassured him that things weren't as dire as they seemed. Yet, without communication devices, they couldn't reach out for help, leaving him puzzled about how to seek assistance.
Witerson II repeatedly explained to the soldiers escorting them that he was the camp commander of Witerson Combat Camp and needed to see his superior. But the soldiers ignored his incessant chatter. Though Witerson II was seething with anger, he had no choice but to comply. After narrowly escaping death at the hands of zombies, he didn't want to die at the hands of his own people. Fortunately, this group didn't seem intent on harming them; they simply led them into a shopping mall and left them there. Of course, they weren't allowed to leave either, as numerous soldiers stood guard outside.
Though Lin Yi was anxious, Li Qiweng refused to tell him what their options were, leaving him frustrated as he watched her. The soldiers who captured them hadn't bothered them since arriving and hadn't confiscated their food either, so for now, they were safe.
Time passed slowly for two hours. As long as Lin Yi didn't bring up escape plans with Li Qiweng, she remained her usual self—smiling and scolding him in equal measure. However, being trapped felt unbearable, and with no one attending to them during this time, Lin Yi felt increasingly invisible.
Just as Lin Yi's frustration was about to boil over, the previously closed doors of the shopping mall suddenly swung open. Fresh air rushed into the stifling space, and everyone who had been listless perked up at the sight of the entrance, their eyes filled with hope.
"Lin Team Leader! I apologize for arriving late!" A voice tinged with a hint of charm echoed through the room as the door opened.
Lin Yi froze momentarily before looking at Li Qiweng in disbelief; she merely smiled back at him.
"Wen..."
Before Lin Yi could say more, Li Qiweng had already stepped forward to greet the newcomer. Lin Yi stood up as well; he wasn't foolish enough not to realize that this person had come to rescue them.
"Boss, it's been a while," Li Qiweng said seriously but with an underlying weariness.
"I've been relieved of my duties; I only came here because Mr. Li personally requested my presence." A tall bald man slowly emerged from the crowd—it was Li Qiweng's superior, Pachy.
"What happened?" Li Qiweng was surprised that such a situation arose so soon after her departure. In their line of work, unless someone died in service, they would continue until retirement. These individuals were elite personnel selected by the state from thousands; each one was treated like a treasure.
"This isn't a good place to talk; let's discuss it outside." Pachy turned and pointed at a blonde woman beside him. "This is Ika, your husband's colleague."
Li Qiweng looked at Ika, raising an eyebrow. "Thank you for coming all this way."
At that moment, Lin Yi happened to walk over. Hearing Li Qiweng's words, he could only manage a wry smile. "Yes, yes, Ika, you’ve worked hard."
"We can't let our team leader suffer alone; as a subordinate, I naturally have to come to the rescue," Ika said, covering her mouth as she laughed, putting on a worried expression while looking at Lin Yi.
"You can leave now." Perhaps unable to tolerate the scene any longer, the Kenyan Soldier coldly reminded everyone.
Upon hearing this, Lin Yi quickly turned and waved his hand. " Witerson II, gather everyone; we’re getting ready to leave!"
Seeing Lin Yi directing everyone with an air of authority, Pachy glanced curiously at Li Qiweng. Li Qiweng merely sighed and said, "Let’s head out first."
The group quickly assembled and followed Pachy out of the mall's main entrance.
"Where are we going now?" Lin Yi asked, feeling responsible for the large group he was leading.
"Egypt!" Pachy slowly uttered those two words.
"Why not go back home?" Although Lin Yi had previously felt like a stateless person abandoned by his country, he still hoped to return, as it was the place he had lived for over twenty years.
"I don't know. There’s only one flight going to Egypt right now; that’s what they arranged. I can’t change it," Pachy replied as he walked toward an SUV parked outside.
"What should we do, Captain?" Witerson II ran up to Lin Yi and asked. He had decided to follow Lin Yi no matter what.
Lin Yi glanced at a twenty-seat bus parked nearby and realized that although Pachy hadn’t explained why, he wasn’t abandoning those who wanted to follow him.
"We’ll go along for now and figure things out later. We can’t just stay here and be controlled by others without being able to do anything," Lin Yi thought, feeling no joy in reuniting with familiar faces but rather a sense of helplessness amidst various mysteries.
Lin Yi and Li Qiweng walked toward the SUV where Pachy was seated, with Ika closely following behind. The others boarded the bus under Witerson II's arrangement. The former members of the Blood Wolf Mercenary Group exchanged glances before ultimately deciding to stick together.
Only Lin Yi, Li Qiweng, Pachy, and Ika remained in the SUV. As the vehicle moved forward, everyone swayed with its motion, and for a long while, no one spoke.
"I'll take care of it. We received a notification from our superiors that Team Leader Lin and Sister Li are in danger in Kenya. Later, someone from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs came and told us to bring you to Egypt. To prevent any accidents, the research institute sent me with ten doses of the latest serum developed to resist the Zombie Virus."
"Yes, that's roughly the situation. We still don't know the specifics. I was originally dismissed, but then suddenly the Director assigned me here. They also provided twelve A1 forms, just in case." Seeing Ika speak up, Pachy briefly shared his own situation.
"Why were you dismissed?" Li Qiweng asked, puzzled. She couldn't understand how such a situation could arise.
"It's really strange. Do you remember Duren?"
"Yes, what does he have to do with this?" Li Qiweng recalled the recent events; that police officer was quite responsible.
"Well, we went to the hospital to check on his mother, and after we left, there was a sudden fire at the hospital. His mother died in that fire."
"What does that have to do with you?" Lin Yi interjected.
"Exactly, what does it have to do with me? It really doesn't. But later there was a report claiming that a nurse leaked information saying it was because I was smoking inside and carelessly tossed my cigarette butt that caused the fire. Otherwise, with the hospital's strict fire prevention measures, such an incident wouldn't have occurred. You all know how public opinion tends to side with the weaker party. To avoid drawing too much attention, the Director had no choice but to hold a press conference and publicly announce my dismissal."
Pachy shook his head with a bitter smile; he never expected his career would end like this.
