Li Qiweng looked at Lin Yi, who wore a smug expression, feeling an inexplicable anger rise within her. Yet, she found herself unable to reprimand the man; after all, they had faced numerous dangers just to save him. How could she bear to bring him down now?
"Did you get my permission to act as a Mercenary without any organization or discipline?" Li Qiweng couldn't help but question Lin Yi.
"Wen, you've always been in charge of everything. I'm a man; I need to take responsibility for my own affairs," Lin Yi replied, his smile fading into a serious demeanor. In this foreign land, trapped in peril, how could he possibly escape without finding some means of self-preservation?
Li Qiweng wanted to say more, but suddenly someone shouted from behind, "Captain, we've captured a live one!"
Lin Yi turned at the sound and saw Witerson II and Aik dragging someone over. He stretched his stiff body and stood up to walk toward Witerson II.
"What happened?" Lin Yi asked as he approached.
"A few brothers were on guard nearby and saw this guy passed out over there. When he woke up, he refused to talk, so we brought him here," Witerson II explained as he drew closer to Lin Yi.
Lin Yi observed the person whose head was bowed and clothes tattered; he didn't seem like a bad person. However, in this zombie-infested place, one had to be cautious to survive longer. He stepped forward and lifted the man's head. In that instant, he felt the man tremble slightly.
"Hey?" The dirty face seemed familiar, as if he had seen it somewhere before, Lin Yi thought to himself.
"Lin Yi!" To his surprise, the man called out his name upon seeing him.
"Who are you?" Lin Yi still couldn't recognize him and scratched his head in confusion.
"I'm Wu Hao!" The man struggled against Witerson II's hold, trying to break free, but Witerson II was a top-notch professional soldier; it wasn't that easy to escape from him.
"Wu Hao? It's you!" Lin Yi paused for a moment before realizing who it was. "You're not dead?"
"I! If you're still alive, how could I possibly be dead?" Wu Hao's initial joy of surviving after the catastrophe quickly turned into anger at Lin Yi's remark.
Lin Yi smiled awkwardly and said to Witerson II, "Witerson II, let him go. He is a friend who has been through tough times with me."
Witerson II nodded and signaled Aik to release Wu Hao. Once freed, Wu Hao cautiously walked over to Lin Yi and whispered, "Is there any food? I've been hungry all night!"
Wu Hao's hunger reminded Lin Yi that he was feeling quite famished himself. However, as he looked around, he realized that despite being the Captain, he couldn't solve the problem of finding food.
"I want to ask, Witerson II, where is our cooking team?" Lin Yi had no choice but to inquire of the soldier who had been looking at him with admiration.
Witerson II took a moment to process this, and only after Lin Yi explained again did he understand that his Captain was indeed hungry. As a special armored combat unit, Witerson wouldn't be equipped with subpar rations. Among the two remaining armored vehicles, they had found over twenty cans of beef, enough for everyone. After last night's battle, everyone was already starving, and the larger cans of beef were quickly devoured. Naturally, as the current leader of the Blood Envoy, Mr. Lin Yi consumed two cans by himself.
The stark reality presented itself before Lin Yi: first, where would their next meal come from? Second, which direction should they take next?
Seeing everyone looking at him with anticipation, Lin Yi felt a pang of guilt for having no ideas of his own. Noticing Lin Yi's silence, Wu Hao smiled slightly and said, "Everyone, it seems that the entire Mombasa has been overrun by zombies. We must find a way out to survive. However, we are surrounded outside and cannot pass through. To ensure our safety, we need sufficient food and ammunition. Is there anyone who can help us quickly find these supplies?"
"There’s no need to worry about ammunition; I just found plenty of ready-made weapons in the airport security room with Mr. Bai. They are imitation Type 99s and pack quite a punch!" Gal explained as everyone gathered around.
"We have food covered too; I drove around and found a lot of gourmet meals and fuel—enough to sustain us for a while!" Flower Cannon said as he opened a bottle of soda.
"Yes, our biggest problem now is how to get out. We are trapped in the midst of zombies and cannot afford to stay here long," Li Qiweng remarked while surveying the area. Seeing that everyone seemed at a loss for ideas sparked an urge in him to retreat with Lin Yi.
"That's right!" Lin Yi realized that they had returned to the airport again; however, as Captain, he hadn’t had much chance to speak up.
"I remember there used to be an underground passage used by international smugglers that led directly into the inner city. It was sealed off many years ago; I wonder what the situation is like there now," Gal said as he slapped his forehead and looked at everyone.
Lin Yi felt a surge of hope; as long as they could escape, he was willing to try any route available. Everyone looked at him expectantly; although he knew he wasn't that powerful, he had to take responsibility for these people now.
Adopting a tone reminiscent of leaders he'd seen before, Lin Yi paused for effect: "Let's get acquainted as a team." Although he wasn't sure how to "lead" them effectively, it was important to start by getting to know one another. His original team didn't need introductions; it was just Witerson II and one other person—Medic Ike—whom he recognized.
Witerson II first took out his roster, looking at the once full pages of names, now reduced to just a few. The former leader of the Iron Blood Battalion couldn't help but shed tears.
"Driver Akin!" Witerson II called out.
"Present!" A thin man stood at attention.
"Observer Danny!"
"Present!"
"Jack!"
"Present!"
"Joe!"
"Present!"
"Jimmy, Machine Gunner!"
"Present!"
"Mechanic, Tony!"
"Present!"
"Medic, Aik!"
"Here!"
"Commander Witerson II!"
"Here!" Witerson II answered himself.
After listening to Witerson II's introduction, Lin Yi tried hard to remember all their names. However, as an Easterner, he found it difficult to quickly distinguish the faces before him, all of which were dark-skinned. But that wasn't the most important thing right now. Lin Yi turned around and introduced the people he knew to Witerson II's team.
"Alright, everyone is now part of a whole. Mr. Gal will lead the way; let's find the exit!"
Inside the dim metal shed, Roger held his terrified daughter tightly, his face pale. Since last night, the sounds of crashing from outside had not ceased. Usually, Roger made a living selling food in this metal shed, and he had a chance to escape before those relentless creatures arrived. However, at that time, his daughter was sleeping in a partition of the shed. When he rushed in to grab her and prepare to leave, the zombies were already at the door. Helplessly, poor Roger could only brace himself against the narrow metal door to prevent the zombies from breaking in. Fortunately, although it was terrifying to see those grotesque creatures drooling through the cracks of the door, they had not managed to break into the shed.
His daughter had cried herself to exhaustion and was now sleeping with her eyes closed. Even in her dreams, she was filled with panic; her slightly uneven brows were tightly furrowed, and her small hand clutched Roger's arm tightly. Her sweaty face revealed her unease. Roger felt a pang of pain in his heart and held his daughter even closer, praying to God for a messenger to come and save his poor soul.
Suddenly, Roger heard a strange noise, as if something heavy was approaching him. He looked outside through a hole in the metal wall but could only see a few zombies lingering by the door due to his limited perspective.
Then he saw one zombie on the edge sway and fall down. Before he could comprehend what was happening, another zombie collapsed.
"Oh God, I know You will not abandon Your most faithful follower," Roger said devoutly as he kissed the ground beneath him. He continued to peek outside through the crack in the door; in just a moment of distraction, five or six zombies had already fallen and did not rise again.
Roger felt excitement bubbling up inside him as he prepared to open the door and greet the messenger sent by God to save him. However, after holding one position for too long, his body went numb, and he almost fell when trying to stand.
"Daddy, what happened?"
Roger's daughter rubbed her sleepy eyes and looked at him in confusion; she had just been awakened by his sudden movement.
"Yes, Lisa, a messenger has come to rescue us! Let's go outside!" Roger lifted his seven-year-old daughter Lisa and opened the metal door.
The long-awaited sunlight shone down on the father and daughter, and the air, mixed with a faint scent of the sea, filled their lungs, dissipating much of the gloom in their hearts.
Watching the Flower Cannon, Witerson II, and Bailiso take down the six Zombies ahead, Lin Yi couldn't help but smile awkwardly. As Captain, he was supposed to be the strongest among them, but if it were him facing those Zombies, he would likely waste a lot of bullets and still not achieve such a clean result.
"There's someone over there!" Li Qiweng exclaimed as he spotted a Black Man carrying a half-grown child. His brow furrowed; it was quite rare to see a living person in this place that had turned into a ghost domain.
The armored vehicle quickly approached the Black Man, and when everyone saw his smiling face looking back at them, they finally relaxed their fingers that had been tightly gripping the triggers. Thankfully, it was indeed a normal living person.
"I'm Roger, and this is my daughter Lisa. Thank you for saving me!" Roger said as he bowed towards the vehicle.
Seeing no immediate danger, Lin Yi flipped over and jumped down, followed closely by Li Qiweng. As they approached the Black Man, Lin Yi introduced himself, "Hello, I'm Lin Yi!"
"Daddy, you're a hero!" Lisa chimed in from Roger's arms.
Lin Yi was taken aback for a moment as he looked at Li Qiweng walking toward him. He reached out and gently patted Lisa's head, feeling a bit shy as he replied, "Yes, we are heroes. You are one too."
Upon hearing this, Lisa looked at her father beside her and broke into a smile reminiscent of Survival After the Catastrophe.
