Lin Yi stood still as a crowd approached him, waiting for them to speak. However, they merely stared at him in silence, as if he were an alien. Not used to being the center of attention like this, he finally asked, "Can someone say something? Where are we headed next?"
"Superman! Oh, no, Hero! Please allow me to pay my respects," Witerson II suddenly exclaimed, excitedly reaching out to shake Lin Yi's hand. But halfway through, he hesitated and instead gave a formal military salute before falling silent again.
"You... you're still human, right?" Flower Cannon stammered, unable to believe that this slightly plump man possessed such terrifying combat power.
Lin Yi remained silent, simply wiping his blade with his sleeve, appearing enigmatic.
"The amazing Oriental man must possess legendary martial arts!" Gal said dreamily, his face filled with admiration. Lin Yi heard this and didn't deny it; he just patted Gal on the shoulder in acknowledgment. However, the seemingly light gesture caused Gal to fall onto the ground, clutching his shoulder with a pained expression but not uttering a word.
Seeing this scene, Bai couldn't help but marvel inwardly at how much strength it took to knock a person weighing over a hundred pounds down so easily. Trying to appear calm, Bai asked Gal, "What's wrong?"
"It hurts! It hurts!" Gal's face was now drenched in sweat, clearly in genuine pain.
Lin Yi felt a bit embarrassed and scratched the back of his head. "Sorry, I didn't control my strength." He then helped Gal up, but Gal didn't dare come close again and instead retreated to rub his shoulder.
"Hero, what should we do now?" Witerson II asked eagerly, as if grasping at a lifeline after losing all hope.
Lin Yi felt a bit shy from the way Witerson II addressed him and blushed slightly. "Please don't call me a hero. My name is Lin Yi; I'm from Lion City. Thank you for your help earlier."
"I am Witerson II, from Witerson Combat Camp..." At this point, Witerson II's eyes turned red as he refrained from mentioning his background and instead pointed at the others behind him. "These are my brothers in life and death!"
"It's definitely still dangerous here; we should get out first!" Lin Yi urged. He feared that more enemies would arrive soon; after all, the effects of the medicine were already wearing off. They needed to find a safe place quickly.
"Yes! You can ride in my armored vehicle; there's a highway from the airport leading into the inner city. We'll get there fast!" Gal said with renewed military composure.
Lin Yi glanced at the others and nodded. "We have a few more people in Cabin; let's bring them along."
Witerson II naturally admired his hero and respected such a skilled individual wholeheartedly! Seeing that Witerson II had no objections, Lin Yi and the others hurried back to Cabin to bring Li Qiweng and the others down.
Although two armored vehicles were spacious enough, it felt cramped once all eight of them piled in. Witerson II and Gal cooperatively perched on top of the vehicle. Lin Yi felt somewhat guilty for using someone else's vehicle and taking up space. Meanwhile, Li Qiweng was still unconscious, and he was worried about not being able to keep an eye on her.
Witerson II had mentioned that it would take twenty minutes to reach the inner city; hopefully by then they could find an embassy where he could rest without worrying about being unattended. However, Aoling Er kept staring at him from the side, making him feel uneasy.
"What’s wrong?" Lin Yi couldn't help but ask.
"Can I ask if you are from the Lion City Biological Research Institute?" Aoling Er asked timidly.
"Yes, that's right. And you are?" Lin Yi seemed to have realized something, but he couldn't sort out his thoughts at the moment.
"I am a researcher stationed in Mombasa, and everyone calls me Reiko." Once she confirmed Lin Yi's identity, Reiko became less reserved.
"Are you here to pick me up?" Lin Yi's heart raced. He had always suspected that the murder was a decision made by the institute, but now that someone from the institute had come to pick him up, did that mean there were others behind the plot to kill him?
Before Lin Yi could make sense of it all, a sudden shout came from outside.
"This bridge is now closed. No personnel are allowed to cross!"
What is going on? Lin Yi felt a tightness in his chest and opened the car roof to take a look. A blinding light hit his face, making it impossible for him to open his eyes.
Lin Yi shielded his eyes with his hand. "What's going on? Why did the car stop?"
"The road ahead is blocked by the military; we can't get through," Witerson II's hoarse voice reached Lin Yi's ears. Lin Yi squinted and looked ahead. They were approaching a bridge, where many vehicles were shining powerful searchlights at them. On the other side of the bridge, there were even more bright lights reflecting off the water surface, creating an unbearable glare.
"Why won't they let us through?" Lin Yi felt frustrated; the situation was too strange!
After listening, Witerson II spoke in the local language to those on the other side, but from Witerson II's expression, it was clear that things were not good.
"They think we might be infected with a virus and won't let us cross. If we try to force our way through, they will shoot us on sight!" Before Witerson II could explain further, Gal interjected.
"Aren't they pushing us into a corner?"
"They said if we don't leave immediately, they will kill us!" Gal added.
"Then I refuse to leave!" Lin Yi felt emboldened and confident that he could breach this ironclad blockade.
"Ten!"
"Nine!"
“……”
“Not good, they want us to leave right now, or they’ll start shooting!”
Lin Yi, who had just been regarded as a hero, now felt like he was being chased away like Mourning Dog. He was truly unwilling to accept this. But seeing that the other side had already set up a large-caliber machine gun, he knew that even if he managed to escape, the remaining people, even if they hid in the armored vehicle, would be turned into a sieve.
“Retreat!” A wise man does not suffer immediate losses. Lin Yi took on a leadership role and issued his first command. Witerson II responded promptly, turning the vehicle around immediately.
Despite their reluctance, no one was willing to rush to their deaths. Lin Yi opened the window and stood up, trying to let the cool wind clear his mind.
“Where should we go now?” Flower Cannon had somehow joined him outside.
“Where can we go? To die or to commit suicide?” Gal was also furious about why those people wouldn’t let them pass. After going through so much hardship to escape, they were being driven back again; everyone was upset.
“I’m just a Mercenary; I can go anywhere. It’s just a pity for our Blood Wolf Mercenary Group. Now that the boss is dead, only a few of us are left from dozens. It seems our Blood Wolf will be disbanded in the Underworld from now on. Sigh!” Flower Cannon sighed.
“Why don’t we join you?” Witerson II, who had been silent all along, suddenly spoke up.
“You? Are you kidding? Just by looking at you, it’s obvious you’re a high-ranking officer; why would you mix with us? You’d be wasting your life!” Flower Cannon scoffed, even though Witerson II had just helped them significantly.
“Hmph, what high-ranking officer? Right now, I’m just a pawn. If I don’t find a way out for myself, I’ll end up dying a miserable death sooner or later!” Witerson II spat and shook off his previous dejection. The blow he had received today was too great; it seemed he had suddenly awakened and reignited his fighting spirit.
“With just the few of us left and no one to lead us, it’s useless!” Flower Cannon thought about their current situation—just a bunch of defeated soldiers talking about being Mercenaries?
“Huh? Isn’t Lin the hero your leader?” Witerson II hadn’t yet grasped the situation of their eight-member team. To him, someone as formidable as Lin Yi must surely be in charge.
“Me? The leader of the Mercenary group?” Lin Yi pointed at himself in surprise!
“Yes, Lin Yi, you are now our Captain! We’re following you!” Flower Cannon was also taken aback and then looked at Lin Yi as if he had discovered a new continent. Having such a powerful figure as their Captain was more than enough.
Flower Cannon then shouted into the vehicle: “Old Bai, Lin Yi is our Captain now; you have no objections, right?”
Bai felt quite frustrated. The person he once thought he could easily kill was now going to be his leader; it seemed ridiculous upon reflection. But then he remembered how Lin Yi had charged into the Zombie horde and slaughtered them as if they were nothing. Even if he didn’t want to accept it, he had no choice but to comply.
Seeing that Bai had no objections, Flower Cannon didn't need to ask the opinions of the other two women. Instead, he turned to Witerson II and asked, "Are you all joining?"
"Yes, my brothers are all following me on this path!" Witerson II nodded.
"Haha, our Blood Wolf Mercenary Group is about to rise again!" Flower Cannon laughed heartily into the air.
"I think we should just call ourselves the Mercenary Group. We'll be like descending angels saving people from peril!" Although this Captain title felt a bit strange to Lin Yi, he thought it was still a valid suggestion.
"That's not very imposing!" Flower Cannon frowned, clearly dissatisfied.
"Then let's call ourselves the Blood Envoy Mercenary Corps!" Lin Yi suddenly had a bright idea, thinking about the bloody tasks they would undertake in the future. He felt that the name Blood Envoy was quite fitting.
"Listening to the Captain!" Witerson II had already regarded Lin Yi as their leader.
Seeing that Witerson II supported him, Flower Cannon could only shrug helplessly. Lin Yi felt a surge of joy at their expressions but was suddenly hit by a wave of fatigue. He knew the effects of the medicine were wearing off, so he quickly said to the two, "I'm tired now and need to rest. Please don't disturb me." With that, Lin Yi crawled into the vehicle and sat down next to Li Qiweng.
Lin Yi didn't know how long he had slept, but when he opened his eyes, he found the light a bit blinding. Just as he was about to get up, a gentle voice with a hint of teasing reached his ears: "Captain Lin has finally woken up."
Without needing to turn around, Lin Yi knew it was Li Qiweng's voice. He looked at Li Qiweng with pride and said, "So, how's my Mercenary Group doing?"
