Witerson II was now completely numb. Out of the more than two thousand brothers who had followed him, fewer than ten remained. The upper command's rescue had become a joke; he could no longer contact any units. The once-glorious Witerson Combat Camp was on the verge of becoming a lesson in failure. And he, Witerson II, would soon be nothing more than dust in history, forever lost in the river of time.
As he thought about the endless waves of Zombies that had surged toward them, Witerson II felt a twitch of despair in his heart. This boundless ocean of Zombies rushed at their armored vehicles like hungry ghosts from hell. There was no hope, only despair; soldiers screamed in agony, and he could only watch helplessly. What terrified them even more was the possibility of encountering Giant Zombies among the horde—massive creatures with incredible resilience to damage, impervious to ordinary bullets. While they could still maneuver their armored vehicles against regular Zombies, these Giant Zombies would often crash directly into Military Vehicles, flipping many troop transports over. Inside, soldiers were either killed upon impact or quickly devoured by the relentless swarm.
After exhausting their ammunition, the Zombies showed no signs of diminishing. It seemed as if the entire city had been overrun by them. The situation grew increasingly dire; many vehicles came to a halt due to constant Zombie interference and were then lifted by Giant Zombies, resulting in the occupants being brutally thrown to their deaths. By the time they broke through the encirclement, only two armored vehicles remained from what had once been a proud Witerson Combat Camp.
The armored vehicles drove aimlessly, unsure of which direction to take. Although no Zombies were currently charging at them, they felt no sense of survival after the catastrophe. Former comrades had lost their lives within just a few hours, and their superiors had failed to come to their aid. The feeling of being abandoned was bleak; many of the once-steel-hearted men were now crying. The collapse of faith swept over them like a tide; even Witerson II felt utterly dispirited.
"Boss, where do we go now?" Perhaps having witnessed so much death already, Medic Ike appeared surprisingly composed at that moment.
Hearing Aik's hoarse voice, Witerson II seemed to lose his soul for a moment and remained silent.
"We should pull ourselves together; otherwise, who will avenge our fallen brothers?" Aik's voice grew louder; living meant hope, and he didn't want to see this combat camp truly fall into decline.
Avenge? Witerson II trembled slightly before lowering his head again. His previously numb gaze now appeared gray and hollow, devoid of life. He had no idea what this battle was truly about; did avenging mean killing these creatures that could no longer be called human?
"Watch out! Gunfire ahead!" Aik suddenly shouted, causing those around him to instinctively become alert.
Lin Yi was growing bolder by the moment; he had learned to control his body with increasing skill. At first, he relied solely on speed and strength—when a Zombie lunged at him, he would draw his knife early and strike its head. At the same time, three Zombies charged at him, but to him, they moved incredibly slowly. To everyone else’s eyes, it seemed as if he had simultaneously slain three Zombies in an instant. Of course, even Lin Yi himself didn’t notice this; he was solely focused on cutting down the encircling Zombies as quickly as possible!
"Is this guy even human anymore? When we captured him back then, he was begging for mercy! Now he's like some kind of superhero," Flower Cannon exclaimed in astonishment.
"I can't believe this guy was hiding his true abilities! Wasn't he afraid we would kill him back then?" White had hardened considerably through repeated killings but couldn't help but marvel at Lin Yi's sheer lethality.
Gal's mind raced with countless thoughts; as a police officer, he had heard plenty about super soldiers. Now that he witnessed one displaying such prowess right before him, even someone as composed as him found himself momentarily speechless.
The pressure that had once hung over them began to lift significantly. Lin Yi sliced through numerous Zombie heads as if chopping vegetables while the remaining fighters also took action and blew off several Zombie heads themselves. In just half an hour, they had reduced the number of Zombies by nearly half—though it was mostly due to Lin Yi's efforts alone; his speed was simply too overwhelming.
Intense combat also meant intense consumption; their group had already fired off their last bullet with little ammunition left. There were still many Zombies remaining, and Lin Yi couldn't hold out forever on his own—they couldn't afford to do nothing.
"There’s another knife here, exactly like the one that guy is holding!" Bai glanced around and spotted the blade lying on Li Qiweng's body.
"There's only one knife, and we don't have enough to go around," Gal said. The P77 rifle in his hands was designed for close combat, but he never expected to need cold weapons; after all, in modern times, firearms were king.
"Even though our guns are out of bullets, we can still use them as hammers. The zombies' heads aren't made of iron; a few good hits will break them," Flower Cannon remarked, recalling how he had recently smashed a zombie's skull with the butt of his gun.
"Alright, let's go down and make some chaos!"
Without hesitation, Bai drew the knife from Li Qiweng's body and was the first to jump down. Flower Cannon and Gal exchanged glances before following suit.
The remaining members of Witerson Combat Camp had unknowingly reached the airport, where they could already hear gunfire from within.
"There's fighting inside the airport!" Witerson deduced after listening to the sporadic gunshots.
For an ordinary person, this would be the time to flee, but as a professional soldier, he felt obligated to investigate! The armored vehicle quickly prepared for combat as they rushed toward the source of the gunfire.
"The sounds are coming from the tarmac!" The driver swiftly steered toward that direction and soon discovered a large opening.
When they illuminated the scene ahead, everyone was taken aback, their mouths agape in disbelief. Although they encountered numerous zombies, compared to the harrowing experience in the city earlier, these zombies seemed trivial. But when they saw a figure weaving through the horde, effortlessly harvesting zombie heads, they could hardly believe their eyes. What kind of person possessed such combat prowess?
Lin Yi was dazzling at that moment; even the members of Witerson Combat Camp failed to notice that Gal and others from Cabin were also fighting fiercely against zombies. Watching the fearless figure under the lights reignited Witerson II's previously extinguished spirit!
"Charge forward! Eliminate these vile demons!" Witerson II shouted, raising his gun to begin firing at the zombie horde.
At this point, the zombies had also noticed these uninvited guests and charged recklessly toward them.
The power of mechanical civilization played an unparalleled role at this moment; the despair, helplessness, and pressure within everyone erupted. The armored vehicle crashed into the zombie horde like a divine hammer. With no Giant Zombies present now, they drove madly over the undead.
Lin Yi was too busy killing zombies to pay much attention; he was simply overjoyed. Just imagine—when could an ordinary person ever have such a chance to unleash their vengeance so freely? Watching each zombie's head roll away as his blade struck down brought an exhilarating satisfaction that resonated deep within him!
"People from the military, we're saved!" When Gal spotted two Military Vehicles approaching, a surge of fighting spirit suddenly welled up within him, dispelling his earlier numbness and resistance.
"It seems the organization still cares about you; they actually sent someone to rescue you!" Flower Cannon teased, just as a Zombie lunged at them.
With a whoosh of wind, Flower Cannon swung his sniper rifle and brought it crashing down on the Zombie's head. Instantly, brain matter mixed with the stench of rotting flesh splattered everywhere.
The trio formed a defensive formation, led by Bai, and began to reap the lives of the feeble Zombies. Although their effectiveness wasn't as impressive as Lin Yi's, they still put in considerable effort.
Bai swung his blade with some reluctance; he could easily cleave a Zombie in two. However, he soon realized that no matter how fast he was, he was merely child's play compared to Lin Yi.
The armored vehicles were just as lethal as Lin Yi, if not faster. With the addition of these two heavy weapons, the remaining Zombies were swiftly dispatched in all sorts of bizarre and gruesome ways, rendered immobile forever.
When the last Zombie fell, the airport seemed to freeze in an instant, enveloped in silence. Everything felt unreal, yet reason told them this was indeed reality. Just moments ago, they had united—though not entirely cohesively—to annihilate over two thousand man-eating monsters.
"What are my brothers staring at?" Lin Yi broke the silence first; he hated this suffocating atmosphere because it always felt like something bad was about to happen.
The airport was vast and quiet. Though Lin Yi's voice wasn't loud, everyone present heard him. Witerson II also came to his senses and called out to his few remaining brothers to step out of the armored vehicle.
Bai and his companions shook off their brief stupor and exchanged glances before instinctively moving toward Lin Yi. At that moment, Lin Yi was covered in sticky liquid—likely splattered from the Zombies. However, the joy swelling within him was beyond words; his long-held hero complex had finally been fulfilled!
