In a secluded part of the city, a gray-white building stood on a hillside. Dense vegetation nearly concealed this complex, while colorful indicator lights flickered in the rooms, hinting at the building's extraordinary nature.
"General, we can no longer delay; we must take action!" A middle-aged man with the rank of Major approached a burly Bald Man, holding a document in his hand.
"In peacetime, even I can only mobilize a battalion without the President's orders," the Bald Man sighed deeply, his once-straight back seeming to bend slightly with the weight of his words.
"Then why hasn't the President given you any orders?"
"Major, you must understand that there are many things you are not authorized to inquire about." The general, who had initially shown no signs of authority, regained his former presence. Even a simple statement made the Major's heart tremble.
"I have already notified the mayor and begun organizing the evacuation of citizens. Let's try to buy as much time as possible."
"But only the people in the West District know about this now."
"There’s no choice; someone has to sacrifice to buy time for others."
Silence fell over the room again, but outside, military tents bustled with activity as people came and went.
The number of vehicles around them was increasing, and the fear etched on people's faces revealed that they were aware of the impending crisis.
"It seems they are preparing for a full city evacuation," Lin Yi said as he paused while getting out of the vehicle, stretching his numb legs.
Due to the large number of people, aside from Flower Cannon driving, the other four girls remained inside the car. As one of the guys, Bai was also present, while Gal sat directly on top of the vehicle. Although it was cooler up there, danger lurked everywhere with Zombies trying to get close.
Fortunately, Bai's marksmanship was impressive, and Gal was becoming increasingly skilled. Lin Yi could only watch enviously from the side; there was no rushing this process. However, he gradually began to discover some tricks and improved his shooting skills quickly.
"Although we run fast, the number of Zombies behind us is increasing rapidly. They will catch up with us soon," Gal said. As a police officer, he naturally wanted to go out and fight bravely. However, after witnessing many of his colleagues turn into Zombies, he understood that individual heroism was nothing but a joke in the face of this disaster.
At that moment, the previously crowded crowd suddenly parted to create a gap about three meters wide. Lin Yi looked through the opening and saw that several Military Vehicles were approaching.
Cheers erupted from the crowd, and thoughts of desperate escape were temporarily cast aside. For ordinary people, the military represented the strongest force; anyone who encountered them faced certain death. Of course, people's emotions were never uniform; many glared at the soldiers who had arrived late. They could only remember the despair expressed by their loved ones over communication devices, feeling helpless and powerless—a burden that was hard to let go.
For countless years, people have tried to make themselves strong because only the strongest can control their own fate without interference from external forces. The military, as the most powerful force, has always been reliable. So when the military appeared, people no longer feared; they awaited the soldiers to eliminate these vile creatures. The Iron Warriors had already formed a solid defensive line along the wide street.
Flames roared fiercely, and the existence of steel fire was meant to eliminate all obstacles in our path!
The first Zombie was quickly reduced to pulp.
Then came the second, third... Soon, all the Zombies visible to everyone were eradicated.
Women began telling their children that it was time to go home. Men saw how weak the Zombies were and regretted not having picked up weapons to fight earlier. Young men felt their blood boil with excitement, eager to rush forward and grab a big gun to sweep everything away.
The crowd cheered again as the military efficiently prepared to return to their camp.
Although Lin Yi wasn't sure how many Zombies remained, he knew that the story had just begun.
This was merely an appetizer, albeit not a very tasty one. Just when everyone was getting ready to pack up and head home for a wash and sleep, they discovered that more had come.
"There are still two stragglers left; any brothers willing to give me a chance to show off?" A young man in his twenties jumped onto a vehicle's roof upon seeing more Zombies appear, ready to take them down and demonstrate his bravery.
The soldiers ignored the show-off, simply picking up their weapons again and aiming at the prey.
A familiar scene unfolded once more, as two Zombies quickly turned into nothing but minced flesh.
However, it wasn't long before another appeared, then three... the number of Zombies seemed to multiply exponentially.
Ten!
Fifty!
Then a hundred, or perhaps even more; no one bothered to count anymore. The crowd began to panic again, and the already crowded street became even more congested.
The newly emerged Zombies moved with incredible speed, several nearly breaking through the line of Military Vehicles. The Zombies kept coming, so many that the soldiers didn't know where to aim their guns.
The one who had just been eager to show off saw the situation worsening and immediately ran into an alley beside the street. He must have felt pleased with his cleverness, but soon fear took over.
Inside the alley, a group of Zombies rushed out excitedly, their faces smeared with blood appearing grotesque under the lights. When they spotted their first delicious meal before them, a spark of excitement seemed to ignite in their previously lifeless eyes.
Delicious, delicious! This was perhaps their only thought at that moment, and they eagerly devoured the unfortunate soul in front of them.
Afterward, they didn’t have time to wipe the blood from their mouths as they emerged into the fleeing crowd, still carrying half-eaten intestines and what seemed to be a still-beating heart.
Another round of screams erupted; people were truly terrified as Zombies had already surrounded them.
After the woman's scream came the helpless cries of children, while the men either roared in anger or fled in fear. The world suddenly shifted from light to darkness; perhaps we should not have rejoiced so early.
Watching the precarious defense line, Lin Yi and the others felt a surge of terror and unease. The sudden concentration of so many Zombies was undoubtedly deadly. The military could no longer hold them back; it seemed the entire city had already sunk into a quagmire of Zombies.
"Quick, throw grenades, increase firepower!" The commander shouted from the command vehicle while urgently contacting his superiors.
The deafening roar echoed all around, yet it still could not disrupt the frantic urge of people to escape. Without proper guidance, the chaotic situation only worsened, leaving no way out.
The commander watched the crazed Zombies outside the window, his heart trembling incessantly. It might still be possible to escape at this moment; if they delayed any longer, they would truly be devoured by these Bloodthirsty monsters until nothing remained.
Finally, his superior made contact.
"I order your unit to hold out for reinforcements, buy enough time for the civilians to retreat. The President is watching you! Keep it up, folks!"
It was a mechanical statement with no real significance. This commander was no fool; he understood that he had essentially been abandoned.
"Colleagues, as soldiers, our most important duty is to protect our homeland. Now, at this moment of life and death, it is time for us to fight for this city and its people!"
"I hope there will be no deserters from Witerson Combat Camp!"
"I hope every one of you can fight until the very last moment!"
"I hope you all can showcase the spirit of Witerson!"
"In the name of God, I, Witerson II, swear that I will fight alongside you until the end! If there are any deserters, I will personally kill them without a military tribunal!"
After a brief silence, the soldiers shouted in unison, "Understood, Commander!"
Another battle of blood and fire had begun! The soldiers' fighting spirit was ignited, and the combat quickly reached a fever pitch. The Zombies charged recklessly, soon breaking through the soldiers' defenses and merging with others that surged from the alleys. In no time, the soldiers found themselves being overwhelmed from behind as well, forcing them into a two-front battle. For Witerson Combat Camp, which was already short on manpower, this was a dire situation.
"Old Bai, hold on tight! I'm going to charge forward!"
Zombies were relentlessly tearing into one person after another, and the situation was critical. The Flower Cannon's vehicle was stuck in traffic, unable to move forward or backward, while occasionally being greeted with enthusiastic embraces from Zombies.
"Brother, just drive out! We'll clear the way for you from above!" Bai swiftly eliminated a Zombie that had approached Jiao Jiao's window.
Lin Yi, Gal, and Bai formed a triangular formation on top of the vehicle to defend against their surroundings. However, their ammunition was limited; they needed to break out of the encirclement quickly.
Flower Cannon's driving skills soon earned everyone's respect; whenever there was an opening, he would dash through it. Other vehicles trying to cut him off were simply asking for trouble, as they were directly shoved aside by his off-road vehicle.
As their off-road vehicle continued to overtake one car after another, the surroundings began to feel less congested. In fact, for most people facing danger, the first instinct is to flee immediately; many had run out in their pajamas. Along the road, they saw people attempting to stop Lin Yi's vehicle, but before they could even consider doing a good deed, those individuals were brutally bitten by Zombies that emerged from the shadows.
It wasn't that everyone had become numb; it was just that when we find ourselves unable to change anything despite our efforts, silence might be the best choice.
