"Sis! I need the report." After calling out several times, Fat Officer realized that aside from a scream, there was no further response.
"My name is Aoling Er, but everyone calls me Reiko." Although Reiko didn't understand what Fat Officer meant, she quickly introduced herself.
"N-no, my beautiful sister, I want to know about the monster you just saw." Fat Officer was getting anxious, holding the communicator tightly, feeling a bit frantic without any clues.
"I'm sorry, Officer..."
"You can call me Gal." Fat Officer interrupted Reiko.
"Okay, Gal Officer. Here's what happened."
Reiko quickly recounted the events, and with each word, Gal's fear grew. Perhaps it had been too long since peace had reigned; he felt utterly helpless in the current situation as if it were the end of the world.
"You mean they are all decayed and still biting people?"
"Yes, Officer."
Reiko slowly calmed her emotions. Although the situation was chaotic, it wasn't entirely hopeless.
"Is that your monster?"
Seeing Gal's terrified expression, Reiko knew without looking back what was happening. At this moment, all they could do was unite and start fighting.
Since Reiko had been dispatched to Africa, she was not an overly delicate girl who would simply cry in such a situation. Although Gal hadn't encountered anything that made his skin crawl in years, after the initial shock wore off, he immediately drew his gun and began shooting.
"Bang bang bang~~"
A series of gunshots rang out as Reiko quickly took cover beside Gal. It was then that she faced the Zombie directly for the first time. Its body dripped with a pale milky liquid, and sparse hair clung tightly to its forehead. The flesh on its shoulders and cheeks had nearly rotted away, with blood-red strands of meat writhing like worms as the Zombie moved. Its mouth was perpetually open, emitting a raspy "Hehe" sound from its throat.
Before Reiko could figure out what to do, she heard a loud shout from the Gal Officer nearby: "It’s actually invincible!"
Indeed, every person who fought a Zombie for the first time would discover this truth. No matter how many bullets they took, they stubbornly advanced toward their target, driven by a relentless determination that seemed to say they wouldn't rest until they had bitten someone.
"They're already dead; ordinary methods of killing won't work on them."
Suddenly, a man appeared at the entrance of the police station—a man drenched from head to toe. A faint scar ran across his forehead, and his fair skin paired with well-defined features gave him a striking presence. This was Reiko's impression at that moment.
"Who are you?" Gal asked, unsure whether to aim his gun at the approaching Zombie or the unfamiliar man. He felt that this man posed an even greater threat.
"A person who can help you," the stranger replied as he swiftly approached the Zombie and fired several shots into the back of its head until its skull was nearly obliterated.
The Zombie, which had been advancing relentlessly, suddenly collapsed to the ground as if its entire body had gone limp. Gal's gun, which had been aimed at the Zombie, was now pointed directly at the stranger.
"First of all, I don’t like being threatened with a gun. Secondly, there are many more of these pests outside. I suggest you call in any reinforcements you can muster quickly; otherwise, this city is doomed."
"Who are you?" The age-old philosophical question slipped out of Gal's Consciousness.
"You can call me Bai."
"Alright, Mr. Bai. I believe we will do everything we can to resolve this crisis."
Although Gal Officer hadn’t seen the situation outside, he knew there was no time to waste.
After a brief silence of two seconds, Gal pressed the red emergency assembly button with great care and quickly relayed the situation to everyone responsible for protecting their homeland. At that moment, there were no hierarchies or orders—only the need to pick up their weapons and defend their home! In that instant, Gal felt a wave of emotion; what had taken only a few minutes felt like a century.
Before Gal could dwell on his thoughts any longer, the phone on the desk rang.
Reiko watched as Gal answered the phone, but he only muttered a few words in the local dialect. Although she couldn't understand much, the look on his face told her it wasn't good news.
"A citizen just called in; those disgusting things have appeared in the city. I need to go out for a bit," Gal said, knowing that facing reality was part of his duty.
"Let's go together," Reiko replied, glancing at Gal. At that moment, she had no other choice.
Listening to the increasingly loud screams outside, Gal nodded. In times of crisis, this was not a struggle between humans; it was a battle between humanity and death itself—either you die or I do. Uniting all possible forces to defeat the enemy was their ultimate goal.
After nodding, Gal quickly approached the armory. When he emerged, he was already loaded with ammunition and held three police P77 rifles in his hands. These rifles were powerful and suitable for long-range attacks in urban settings, primarily used against increasingly cunning and heavily armed criminal gangs hiding within the city.
"We'll use unified firepower; it will make things easier on the battlefield," Gal quickly distributed the weapons to the other two.
"Isn't this against regulations?" asked the man who called himself Bai, curious.
"If you use that gun to harm any civilian, I will hunt you down and bring you to justice, no matter where you are," Gal said sternly, looking directly at Bai.
Reiko stuck out her tongue after hearing this and then took her gun and walked outside. Although she had never truly been on a battlefield, she was somewhat familiar with firearms; after all, Africa was still a chaotic place.
In the neon-lit city, shadows lurked beneath its bustling surface, with various sounds intertwining. Sometimes it felt like paradise, but at other times it resembled hell. Now, for all those who were alive, the gates of hell had swung wide open.
Lin Yi gritted his teeth and struggled to draw his sword, but the third zombie had already lunged at Li Qiweng. Lin Yi couldn't bear to imagine what would happen next; he felt as if his heart were being crushed. Yet his unwillingness and anger transformed into strength as Lin Yi swung his sword down decisively, cleaving the zombie in half. The fluid from the zombie splattered all over him, but Lin Yi couldn't care less; his focus was on survival in this critical moment.
Though it was only a distance of three or four meters for Lin Yi—just a second or two—it felt like an eternity for the last zombie that was now almost upon him.
In desperation, it was time for one final push!
Lin Yi clenched his jaw and charged at the vile creature with all his might.
A dull thud echoed through the air. In that fleeting moment, Lin Yi heard the sound but couldn’t stop his momentum. However, by the time he reached Li Qiweng, the ferocious Zombie had already collapsed. The creature's head was mostly blown apart, and through the remaining half, some brain tissue was vaguely visible, charred as if it had been burned in a fire.
Covered in blood and bits of flesh, Lin Yi paused for a moment before kicking aside the truly dead Zombie and scooping up Li Qiweng.
"Brother, that's not very nice. I took care of such a big Trouble for you, and you can't even spare me a glance," came a soft voice from the darkness, one that didn’t quite sound like a girl’s.
Lin Yi wiped his somewhat blurry eyes and focused on the newcomer. The figure was slender, resembling a tall bamboo pole that could easily be used as a clothesline. In their hands was a large sniper rifle; Lin Yi didn’t recognize the model but found it somewhat familiar.
"What’s wrong? Do I look strange? You’ve been staring for so long."
"No, there's another one coming up behind you," Lin Yi replied, realizing that the person was Flower Cannon, who had been teased on the boat earlier.
Flower Cannon paused for a moment upon hearing this, then quickly turned around.
A foul stench rushed toward him; the Zombie was now only about a meter away. However, as a professional assassin, Flower Cannon's reflexes were extraordinary. At such close range, using a sniper rifle wouldn’t be effective since hitting the head was crucial against Zombies.
Flower Cannon swung the sniper rifle like a hammer and began to pummel the Zombie's head mercilessly. After dozens of strikes, even the toughest head would be reduced to nothing but mush.
Though it took less than a minute, wielding such a heavy object left Flower Cannon feeling exhausted.
"Thanks," Lin Yi said sincerely to one of those who had helped him kill the creature. Despite his past hatred for those who had tried to kill him, after experiencing life-and-death situations several times, he found that anger had diminished. In their current circumstances, they were all on the same front line; unity would yield better results.
"It’s been years since anyone spoke to me like that. I can only say you’re worth saving."
"Where are you planning to go now?" Lin Yi asked as he prepared to leave with Li Qiweng on his back.
"Where can I go? I’m carrying two deadweights myself. How about we stick together?"
Lin Yi turned back to take a look, and two figures emerged from the darkness—Jiao Jiao and Hai, whom he had indeed seen earlier.
“How did you two meet?”
“Fate, I suppose. Let’s stick together; we’re all strangers here, and it’s better to have each other’s backs,” Flower Cannon said, waving at Jiao Jiao and Hai to follow.
“I don’t understand. You once tried to kill me, and now you want us to look out for each other? I’m not stupid; I don’t get your intentions.”
“I know, but I also know you need our help. And I can guarantee that until this disaster passes, I won’t take any harmful actions against you.”
“Why should I trust you?”
“You must care a lot about the girl you’re carrying on your back, right?”
“What do you mean?”
“I mean, if I weren’t trustworthy, why would I have just saved your woman?”
“Alright, I believe you!”
Although Lin Yi felt a strong aversion towards the Blood Wolf Mercenary Group, at this moment, he had no choice but to accept that in the face of this common disaster, they would need to unite.
