"Are you dead?"
"I doubt it. You just got kicked a few times; you didn't go meet God, did you?"
"Don't kick me, it hurts!"
"Who told you to shout so loudly? You deserve to get slapped!"
"If you were in danger, you wouldn't shout either!"
"Out here on the ocean, shouting until your throat is raw won't help!"
"What if someone hears us? Maybe we still have a chance!"
"You're really something. By the way, what's your name?"
"Lin Yi!"
"Alright, Mr. Lin, what should we do next?"
Lin Yi felt a headache coming on, not just from the pain of being hit earlier, but from the torment of the situation before him. The moment he realized he was in danger on the deck, danger had already struck. Before he could even see who it was, someone had pinned his arm and thrown a hood over his head. His instinctive reaction was to shout questions, but all he received in return was a flurry of punches and kicks that left Lin Yi crying out in pain.
No matter how much he yelled in agony, no one came to his rescue. Eventually, perhaps because they grew tired of beating him, they tossed him and Wu Hao into a room filled with filthy water. At this point, those people had already torn their masks off and revealed their true intentions. They casually informed them that they were hired—either for money or some other reason—to deliver a shipment to East Africa. They also made it clear that Lin Yi and Wu Hao were meant to die right under everyone's noses. These people were certainly not good folks; they called themselves the Blood Wolf Mercenary Group.
"What can we do? The only thing we can do is listen to them and look for a glimmer of hope," Lin Yi maintained a relatively calm demeanor despite the bizarre situation.
"Why? Can you tell me why?" When Wu Hao stopped pretending to be foolish, he appeared much sharper than Lin Yi, and his mindset wasn't far behind either.
"According to the development of the story, that's how it is!"
"Stop spouting nonsense. If we don't find something to eat soon, we might starve to death before they get a chance to kill us!"
*Creak~*
As if in tune with Wu Hao's emotions, the slightly rusted iron door was pushed open. Lin Yi and Wu Hao looked nervously at the entrance, somewhat hopeful about the world outside.
However, the person who entered paid them no mind and simply tossed a bag before leaving. The two exchanged puzzled glances and walked over together.
"It seems we're really going to die!" Wu Hao said, looking at the food in his hands, utterly pessimistic.
"Bread and clean water are already pretty good; at least we won't go hungry," Lin Yi replied. He was the type who wouldn't give up until he saw the Yellow River. Since someone was still bringing them food, it meant they could still be alive. That gave him hope. Lin Yi encouraged himself and began eating the bread.
"Boss, we've basically controlled the entire ship. We can take care of those two and grab our payment before leaving!"
In the cockpit, a Black-Faced Man stood respectfully before a middle-aged man dressed in a captain's uniform.
"Some want them dead, while others want them alive. If we want to get paid, we need to stay alive too!" The middle-aged man spoke calmly, but his imposing presence was not something that could be cultivated in just a day or two.
"Our Blood Wolf Mercenary Group may not be top-tier, but we've handled our fair share of tough jobs. Why are we so cautious this time against two unarmed people?" the Black-Faced Man protested.
"The client instructed us to stage this accident properly, so we must follow their orders. Besides, the payment is in the cargo hold; do you think it will just disappear?" The middle-aged man seemed somewhat agitated as he mentioned this and waved his hand for the Black-Faced Man to leave.
Ever since he received this job from the Underworld, the middle-aged man had been restless. The fact that someone would go to such lengths to kill two people—having him control an entire tanker just for that—was unsettling. Although he had always lived on the edge, this situation heightened his sense of danger. However, the payment offered was so generous that it could secure his future without worries. To show trust in his mercenary group, the client had even placed the payment on this ship; they could take it as long as they completed the mission.
As the saying goes, every family has its rules, and every country has its laws. The Underworld also has its own set of rules: if you take someone's money, you must help them out of trouble. If you accept payment but fail to deliver on your end, you might not be hunted down by every mercenary group in existence, but you certainly wouldn't be able to continue operating smoothly. Those who left the mercenary world in such a manner would not receive any protection from other mercenaries. In such circumstances, a mercenary stained with others' blood wouldn't last long at all.
The middle-aged man raised his binoculars to scan the horizon, but even the highest peak of Kilimanjaro, capped with its gleaming white snow, was beyond his sight. However, based on experience, he estimated that they were close to their destination. After days of sailing at sea, even the most resilient mercenaries showed signs of fatigue. Most of them gathered on the deck, enjoying the sea breeze and chatting, eagerly anticipating the good times that lay ahead, smiles unconsciously spreading across their faces.
"Hey, kid, what are you planning to do with your fortune this time?" a man with yellowed teeth leaned closer to a young man whose skin had a slightly waxy pallor.
The young man shrank back a bit in fear upon seeing the yellow-toothed man, but then seemed to remember something and straightened his back. "I’m going to take over the brothel in our town and have a three-day party!"
"Hahaha."
"Hahahahaha!" The surrounding people erupted into laughter as if they had heard the greatest joke.
"Is that all you've got? Don’t let me be the one to take you out again; it’ll be embarrassing!" The yellow-toothed man slapped the young man's head in annoyance and spat out the remnants of his nearly burnt cigarette onto him.
"I’m Ruan Hei; you should listen to your master. Look at how ambitious your master is—twenty years as a mercenary! Every time he gets paid, he heads off to Las Vegas. That place, tsk tsk..." A man wearing a colorful headscarf sighed wistfully. Seeing his expression made the young man curious about what was so fun about this place called Vegas.
"Flower Cannon, don’t corrupt my apprentice!" The yellow-toothed man shouted at the one called Flower Cannon.
"I’m Yellow-Toothed Man; am I not allowed to speak my mind? What are you going to do about it?" Flower Cannon replied, his delicate features betraying a hint of provocation in his voice, though it sounded more like playful banter to others.
"I really don’t understand how our Blood Wolf Mercenary Group ended up with someone like you—more delicate than a woman!" The yellow-toothed man had never liked Flower Cannon and spoke without restraint.
Flower Cannon disliked being treated this way; his fair face flushed crimson. "I’m great at shooting; who among you can match me?"
"Oh? So you can shoot too?" The yellow-toothed man seemed to have discovered something new and began circling around Flower Cannon, mischief glinting in his eyes.
The others had long grown accustomed to such scenes; they chuckled lightly before suddenly falling silent. The yellow-toothed man sensed something was off and turned his gaze away from Flower Cannon—his boss had arrived.
The Black-Faced Man stood beside the middle-aged man, seemingly ready to assist him at any moment. The middle-aged man waved his hand, signaling everyone to come over. The crowd instinctively extinguished their cigarettes and lined up neatly.
“Da Kui, is everyone here yet?” the middle-aged man asked the Black-Faced Man beside him.
“Boss, Hai and Jiao Jiao are probably still in the kitchen preparing dinner for everyone!” replied Da Kui, the Black-Faced Man.
“We should be docking tonight. When we do, let’s treat everyone to a nice meal at the hotel. Right now, I need you to gather them all; there’s something important to discuss,” the middle-aged man instructed.
“Understood.” Da Kui quickly ran toward the dining area.
The crowd was curious about why their captain had gathered them all together. However, seeing the smile on Captain's face, they assumed it must be good news.
Da Kui soon returned with Hai and Jiao Jiao, the only two women in their mercenary group. Once everyone was present, the middle-aged man cleared his throat and said, “Everyone follows me, Gu Hai, into adventures to survive in this world! This time, we’ve taken on the biggest job since Blood Wolf was established. I think everyone knows what that means—we’re about to get rich!”
Upon hearing the words “get rich,” the crowd erupted in cheers, their excitement palpable.
“Alright, alright, I’m glad everyone is happy. The ship is almost at its destination, and to reward your hard work over these past days, I’ve decided to distribute the payment right now!” Gu Hai said joyfully. He had been worried about unexpected dangers, but seeing that they were nearing shore without any issues eased his mind. Who would dare disturb their elite armed group that had been hiding its identity so well?
Gu Hai signaled for silence and pointed at Da Kui. “Da Kui, take a few brothers and go fetch the gold from the storeroom!”
Da Kui randomly selected seven or eight people from the group and led them toward the storeroom. Among them was Ruan Hei, who had just received a slap from Yellow-Toothed Man.
“Hey, Da Kui, where exactly is that gold?” Ruan Hei asked as they descended deeper into the ship for five or six minutes without any sign of reaching their destination.
“Don’t rush; just follow my lead,” Da Kui replied. As they walked further along, lights began to illuminate one by one in the corridor. Yet as they got closer to the gold, Da Kui suddenly felt a wave of anxiety wash over him; sweat dripped steadily from his forehead onto the floor.
“Are you afraid of getting lost or something?” Ruan Hei muttered.
“I’ve been a sailor for seventeen years; do you think I wouldn’t know how this kind of ship is structured?” Da Kui snapped back angrily at Ruan Hei’s doubt about his abilities and gave him a hard slap.
Gu Hai carefully calculated the time; it was about time for Da Kui and the others to arrive. He turned to Jiao Jiao beside him and said, "Go bring those two up to the deck."
"They're not ashore yet," Jiao Jiao replied, chatting with a Pale-Faced Man, clearly reluctant.
"Let's be humane and let them breathe a few more breaths of fresh air before they die!" Gu Hai frowned, slightly displeased with Jiao Jiao's attitude.
"Alright, boss!"
Although she was called Jiao Jiao, her personality was quite fierce. Her skills were undoubtedly impressive; otherwise, Gu Hai wouldn't have sent her to bring two big men over.
"Hurry, hurry, run!"
Just as Jiao Jiao brought Lin Yi and Wu Hao to the deck, they saw a black-faced man scrambling in terror from the back of the ship to the deck.
"What’s going on? Why are you so flustered?" Gu Hai felt a tightening in his chest but knew he had to maintain control as the leader.
"They're... they're eating people!" Da Kui exclaimed, nearly in tears.
