The lunch break passed quickly, and Lin Yi rubbed his temples, trying to wake himself up a bit more. During the break, he hadn’t rested at all; instead, he had been pondering the unusual issues he encountered that day. While having lunch with Nock, he thought the Section Chief might share some secrets with him. However, every time he asked a crucial question, Nock would deftly change the subject. Lin Yi couldn’t extract any useful information from Nock.
Shaking his head, Lin Yi tried to cast aside the bizarre thoughts swirling in his mind. Perhaps it was better to distract himself with work. Yet, humans are strange; the more one tries to avoid thinking about something, the more those thoughts linger in their mind. As a nationally renowned Biological Research Institute, everything was under government control, which inevitably suggested some secrets. But if they were this secretive even with internal personnel, could there really be some kind of conspiracy?
He spent the entire afternoon lost in thought, unable to focus on work, and before he knew it, it was time to clock out. Lin Yi sighed softly; perhaps it was best not to dwell on so many troublesome matters. The weekend was just around the corner, and he had already made plans with Wen for an outing. It would be a shame if this vague situation dampened his spirits.
“Time to clock out! Anyone want to go have some fun?” Marin stretched lazily, clearly exhausted from staring at the computer.
“Lin darling is treating us; I certainly won’t hold back,” Ika winked at Marin, teasingly.
Marin, fresh out of school, found it hard to resist such “temptation” and awkwardly scratched the back of his head with a silly grin. “So, Ika, does that mean you’re agreeing to go?”
Ika didn’t respond verbally but looked towards Lin Yi as if seeking his opinion. However, Lin Yi was too preoccupied with his thoughts to notice; he simply grabbed his coat and walked out.
“It seems our busy team leader has no time to accompany us little shrimp soldiers for some fun,” Ika shrugged helplessly as she watched Lin Yi’s figure fade away and prepared to leave.
“Does that mean you’re not going?” Marin asked with a hint of resignation, clearly having given up hope for a fun outing.
“Why not? If you’re treating, what reason do I have to refuse?”
Marin didn’t expect Ika to agree and was momentarily taken aback but managed to maintain her composure. However, her steps seemed a bit more animated and shaky. Just as they were about to leave, Nock rushed in unexpectedly; it was surprising how agile a hefty person could be.
“Hey, does anyone have a communicator I can borrow?” Nock spoke hurriedly as if something important was happening.
“I do! I do!” Marin said cheerfully and immediately handed her communicator hanging from her waist to Nock.
Nock fiddled with Marin’s communicator for a moment before returning it to her. Marin casually asked, “Boss, where’s your communicator?”
“I lost it,” Nock replied as he turned to leave but noticed the two young people looking at him skeptically. He could only chuckle awkwardly and add, “Lin Yi invited me to Eastern Dream for lunch today, but now I can’t even find him.”
“Wow! That place? Where is it?” Marin exclaimed in surprise initially but followed up with something that made one feel like hitting a wall.
“Um, it’s a very luxurious place; not everyone can afford to enjoy it casually. Looks like Lin Yi played me today,” Nock sighed deeply before walking away alone.
Ika and Marin exchanged glances filled with confusion. What exactly was going on today?
As the evening light began to fade, Lin Yi walked alone along Aisley Street, lost in thought. He had a car he could have driven home, but suddenly realizing it had been a while since he last took a stroll, he decided to walk instead. This two-hour journey had already taken him about an hour and a half. The French Sycamores lining the street swayed gracefully beside the tall streetlights, resembling lazy aristocrats stretching their somewhat stiff bodies. Lin Yi's figure flickered in and out of view among them, creating an elusive impression.
"Roar~" Lin Yi let out a light growl, and his previously furrowed brows relaxed. He decided not to dwell on the tangled issues anymore; focusing on working hard and striving to marry Wen as soon as possible was the right path. With this realization, his mood lightened.
Glancing around, he noticed hurried passersby; no one stopped for even half a second at Lin Yi's growl. Perhaps everyone was burdened with their own thoughts, lacking the energy to concern themselves with others. As he casually surveyed his surroundings, Lin Yi inadvertently locked eyes with a lean middle-aged man dressed in a silver-white trench coat. His heart skipped a beat—did this man seem to be staring at him? Did he recognize him? But then Lin Yi reconsidered; perhaps he was overthinking it. Maybe the man was looking at someone else and their gazes just happened to meet.
However, despite Lin Yi's thoughts, the middle-aged man clearly had different intentions. Upon noticing that Lin Yi had seen him, he did not shift his gaze but continued to stare intently at him. Lin Yi was taken aback—could it be that this man had feelings for him? He couldn't let his morale drop like that; he returned the gaze with what he believed was a sharp look. The middle-aged man nodded at him, as if signaling him to come over.
Why shouldn't I go over? Lin Yi muttered under his breath, yet he found himself walking over involuntarily. There was something about this man that made it hard to refuse, as if his superior had assigned him a task and all he could think about was how to execute it well.
"Hello, may I ask what this is about?" Lin Yi tried to appear casual. However, as he approached the imposing figure of the man, he felt an undeniable chill emanating from him that made him slightly uneasy.
"I want to talk to you," the Trench Coat Man said in a steady voice devoid of any emotional fluctuations.
Lin Yi was taken aback; who invites someone for a chat like this? It seemed too abrupt and certainly didn't feel like good news. He frowned slightly and replied, "Is there something urgent?"
"Not really, just some casual conversation." The man turned and walked toward a nearby gazebo meant for resting.
Could you be any more arrogant? Lin Yi silently fumed but followed nonetheless. Regardless of how he felt, it was best to hear the man out first; otherwise, it would come off as rude.
Few passersby noticed anything unusual about the two men; after all, everyone was busy with their own lives and had no time for matters unrelated to them. Lin Yi sat on one of the wooden benches in the gazebo; it felt somewhat chilly now. He looked up at the Trench Coat Man across from him, signaling for him to get to the point.
"I'm not going to beat around the bush," the Trench Coat Man said. "I'm from the National Security Bureau and I have a few questions for you."
The National Security Bureau? Lin Yi's heart raced—he hadn't done anything that could jeopardize national security, so why were they interested in him? However, two years of social experience taught him not to panic in such situations. He feigned calmness and replied, "I'm a model citizen! I even won Best Newcomer at our research institute last year! You know our institute is a key national support facility!"
"Stop with the small talk," the man interrupted bluntly. "I just want to ask you: if your best friend betrayed the country, what would you do?"
Lin Yi felt a wave of discomfort wash over him; it felt like his warm face had met with an icy wall. But there was no time for protests now because the question posed by the man made him uneasy—was he implying that Lin Yi should betray his friend for righteousness? Without knowing the specifics of the situation, he hesitated before responding vaguely, "Naturally, one must prioritize the greater good."
"What do you mean by prioritizing the greater good?" The Trench Coat Man asked calmly.
"Well..." Lin Yi struggled to find words; the man's demeanor left him feeling uncertain about how to clarify things without seeming naive or evasive. Especially under that piercing gaze, he felt himself shrinking back.
Before Lin Yi could finish his response, the Trench Coat Man suddenly lifted his gaze sharply as if sensing something behind Lin Yi. Following his line of sight, Lin Yi turned around and saw what appeared to be a shadow darting swiftly through the dim yellow light in the distance. The speed was astonishing; before Lin Yi could fully comprehend what he saw, the shadow vanished completely. Had he just imagined it? He quickly turned back to ask the Trench Coat Man what was happening.
"Ah~" Lin Yi turned around but saw no one. A sudden chill enveloped him, as if he had fallen into an ice pit. Was this even human? Just a moment of turning around, and the figure vanished. Was it a person or a ghost? Nevertheless, Lin Yi reassured himself that the other party was from the National Security Bureau, so it was quite normal for them to possess abilities beyond ordinary understanding.
Was it already time for ghosts to appear before midnight? Why did that National Security Bureau agent become so agitated upon seeing that shadow and just disappear? It seemed his own questions were still unanswered, and the person who vanished seemed to be stalking him. What could their intentions be? The most important thing now was to get home; after all, trespassing was not permitted by law, or else the Trench Coat Man wouldn’t have talked to him halfway.
Lin Yi lived in a high-end residential area, so as he got closer to his home, the number of pedestrians dwindled until he could no longer see anyone. The atmosphere felt eerie; strange occurrences had been happening one after another, leaving him puzzled. As the saying goes, "Where there are strange events, there must be something unusual." Just when Lin Yi hurried back, a shadow flashed before him—a woman in black with sunglasses appeared right in front of him.
It was dark, yet she wore sunglasses. Did she not fear running into a wall? That was Lin Yi's first reaction. In this area equipped with surveillance cameras, he wasn't worried about any harmful actions from this woman in black. Although she didn’t seem very friendly, her figure was impressive; her oval face bore a look of determination but was undeniably beautiful.
"Excuse me, is there something I can help you with?" When it came to pretty girls, we always had patience, even though we knew she might strike at any moment. But as the saying goes, "To die under the peony is to be a romantic ghost."
The woman in black said nothing and threw a straight punch aimed directly at Lin Yi's face. He hadn’t expected her to act without warning and froze for a moment. Fortunately, it seemed she held back; her fist stopped just a centimeter away from his face.
"You're too slow," Lin Yi heard a hoarse and aged voice, which made him lose some admiration for the beauty before him. However, with all the strange happenings today, he couldn't help but feel frustrated. He decided he needed to clarify what was going on.
Lin Yi habitually touched his nose and smiled, "May I ask what your intention is?"
The woman in black seemed uninterested in answering him; she simply leaped onto a nearby wall and jumped down. Lin Yi suddenly felt unlucky; it seemed everyone disregarded him and acted inexplicably. The most crucial part was how fast everyone could move—such skills were enviable. Lin Yi headed straight to Li Qiweng's house; he needed to tell her about what he had just encountered. They both lived in the same building—Li Qiweng on the third floor and he on the fifth.
