On one side was the astonishing information provided by "Shadow," and on the other was the urgent summons from Captain Wang. Whichever path I chose could lead to unforeseen consequences.
In the end, I decided to meet Captain Wang first. But before I left, I left a message for Shadow 0259:
[Phantom Hacker]: I need more time to verify this information. Give me 24 hours.
[Shadow 0259]: Time is life, Li Ming. Don’t let us down.
I shut down all my devices, ensuring no traces were left behind, and hurried to the safe house.
When I arrived, I found Captain Wang already waiting. To my surprise, there was another person in the room—a middle-aged woman I had never seen before.
“Li Ming, this is Professor Chen,” Captain Wang introduced her. “She is our cryptography expert and a key figure in this operation.”
Professor Chen nodded at me and got straight to the point: “Li Ming, we’ve discovered that the Shadow organization is planning an unprecedented large-scale cyberattack. The target is the global financial system.”
I frowned. “How did you obtain this intelligence?”
“We implanted a super virus in Shadow’s network,” Professor Chen explained. “This virus can silently collect information and even monitor their activities in real time.”
A wave of unease washed over me. This level of surveillance technology was precisely what Shadow claimed to expose as government abuse of power.
“So, what do you want me to do?” I asked cautiously, staring at them.
Captain Wang handed me an Hard Drive. "Inside is a special program. We need you to implant it into their system the next time you connect to the 'Shadow' network. This will give us full control over their network."
As I took the Hard Drive, my unease grew stronger. This task sounded extremely dangerous and morally questionable.
"What if I refuse?" I asked tentatively.
The atmosphere in the room instantly became tense. Captain Wang exchanged a glance with Professor Chen.
"Li Ming," Captain Wang's tone turned serious, "you need to understand that this isn't just about your personal choice. If 'Shadow' really launches that attack, the global economy will be thrown into chaos. We're talking about the livelihoods of billions of people."
Li Ming fell into deep thought. He recalled the information provided by 'Shadow,' evidence of government abuse of surveillance systems. Now it seemed those accusations were not unfounded.
"Give me some time to think," I finally said, "this is a significant decision, and I need to weigh it carefully."
Captain Wang nodded in agreement. "Alright, but don't take too long. We don't have much time."
After leaving the safe house, I didn't head straight home. Instead, I went to an abandoned warehouse on the outskirts of the city. This was a secret base I had set up years ago, known only to me and Anna.
In a hidden corner of the warehouse, I powered up a special computer. This computer was completely isolated from external networks and was my tool for handling the most confidential information.
I began to analyze the Hard Drive carefully. After several hours of in-depth study, my expression grew increasingly grave.
The program was far more complex than Captain Wang had described. It could not only monitor the 'Shadow' network but also silently manipulate and alter data. If this program fell into the wrong hands, the consequences would be unimaginable.
Suddenly, my secure phone vibrated. It was a message from an unknown number:
"Midnight, Old Place. —A"
My heart raced. The "A" could only stand for Anna.
Looking at the Hard Drive in my hand and then back at the message on my phone, I found myself at a crossroads, deciding to meet Anna first.
As night fell, Li Ming drove to the café where Anna and I had first met.
I cautiously approached the designated café, feeling both excited and anxious. I had no idea whether I was about to face the real Anna or another carefully crafted trap.
