In the early morning, the piercing sound of an alarm jolted me from a shallow sleep. I opened my weary eyes and re A Li zed that last night's experiences were not a nightmare, but a stark re A Li ty.
"Get up! Assemble in the yard in five minutes!" a rough voice shouted from outside the door.
My roommates and I hurriedly threw on our clothes and rushed out of the room. The yard was already filled with people—some newcomers who had arrived last night, as well as several old employees who looked weary.
A burly man with a buzz cut stood at the front of the crowd. He scanned us coldly, his gaze filled with disdain and contempt.
"I am Zhang Hai, responsible for training newcomers and daily management," he said, his voice carrying an undeniable authority. "From now on, you are part of our company. Remember, there are only two choices here: work hard and make big money; or slack off and cause trouble, facing punishment and debt."
I instinctively swallowed hard, feeling the tense atmosphere among the crowd.
Zhang Hai continued, "Now, follow me to the training room. I will teach you how to survive here."
We were led into a large room filled with computers. Zhang Hai began to explain in detail what our "work" would entail—what was referred to as e-commerce promotion was actually a variety of scams. There were impersonations of law enforcement, romance scams, cryptocurrency frauds, and more.
"Each person's daily task is to defraud at least 10,000 yuan," Zhang Hai said coldly. "If you fail to meet your quota, your salary will be deducted. If you fail for three consecutive days, there will be special punishments."
I felt a wave of nausea wash over me but dared not show it. Next to me, a girl who looked only a few years older than I was timidly raised her hand. "I... I don't want to deceive anyone. Can I go home?"
Zhang Hai's expression instantly turned fierce. He strode over to the girl and slapped her hard across the face.
"Go home?" he sneered. "Let me tell you this: either you obediently work off your debts or you rot here. Each of you has a debt of 200,000 yuan; that's your travel fee and 'training fee'."
The room was enveloped in a dead silence. We all understood our situation—this was not a company, but a cage, and we had all become pitiful Prisoners.
In the following days, we were forced to learn various Scamming Techniques. My heart was filled with contradictions and pain. I knew this was illegal, that it harmed innocent people, but if I didn’t comply, violence and torment awaited me.
The first week passed, and I barely managed to complete most of the daily tasks.
One day, I received a mission to scam an elderly person. On the other end of the line was a frail voice.
“Hello, this is a representative from the Social Security Center.” I suppressed my discomfort and recited the training script. “Oh, Social Security? What’s going on?” The old man sounded somewhat confused.
I took a deep breath and continued, “Well, we’ve noticed some Abnormal Transactions on your Social Security Card that may indicate it has been compromised. To ensure your Fund Security, we need your cooperation for some procedures…”
As the conversation progressed, waves of dizziness washed over me. The old man’s trust and anxiety came through the Telephone Line, each word piercing my conscience like a sharp knife.
When I coaxed him into preparing for a transfer, my hands trembled, and cold sweat soaked my back. Just then, I heard the old man say, “Wait a moment, let me ask my son…” I hurriedly hung up the phone and rushed to the bathroom, vomiting until the world spun around me.
In the mirror, I saw a pale face with hollow eyes. I no longer recognized that person.
