The Fighting Training Ground in the G-715 Sub-base's D Zone is vast, yet it does not stretch endlessly into the horizon. Instead, it features a fully immersive, all-terrain, all-weather simulated training environment. From the weightlessness of outer space to the towering mountains and vast oceans of various planets, from deserts and arid lands to marshy wetlands and grasslands, every conceivable training scenario is available here. This includes extreme environments such as high temperatures that can simulate nearly ten thousand degrees Celsius and low-temperature or hypergravity conditions.
This reveals the true depth of the G-715 Sub-base. It is rumored that this training ground has reached the D5 level standard set by Mechanical City, costing an immense fortune. It was specifically constructed by Lord Eel of the Sub-base Executive to recruit a D7 level Elite Warrior to safeguard this area.
For Lin Yuan and most Mercenaries, a D7 level warrior is akin to a god—an existence that feels unattainable and worthy of worship. In Mechanical City, the classification of levels is not just trivial data; it requires real combat power to achieve. The F1 to F7 levels are merely child’s play, while ascending from E1 to E7 presents significant challenges. Many citizens of Mechanical City spend their entire lives stuck at the E-Class level, leading them either to become Mercenaries or miners.
Only by advancing to D1 level can one be considered a true contender. Regardless of whether one is Mechanical Life, Carbon-Based Life, or Silicon-Based Life, reaching D1 immediately elevates one to Secondary Citizen status, granting unimaginable benefits. Theoretically, even if one goes bankrupt, Mechanical City will unconditionally tolerate it—a stark contrast to the treatment received by citizens below E-Class.
Thus, everyone strives desperately to level up and enter this noble circle.
However, levels D1 to D7 are merely middle-class; there lies an even greater divide ahead—the S-Class. Only those who ascend to S-Class can be regarded as true Elites in Mechanical City, enjoying benefits that are simply astounding!
Yet this remains even more elusive. Just look at how arrogant Lord Eel is; he could only invite a D7 master to oversee the G-715 Sub-base, highlighting the vast disparity in strength and status.
As Lin Yuan made his way toward the Fighting Arena, he listened to the musings and grand discussions of the Mercenaries around him. Inside, however, he remained calm and collected—he had already signed the duel contract and was no longer worried about any tricks from the trolls.
Unexpectedly, Thomas and Shield Warrior Bison had also heard about the match concerning the Troll Squad. They hurried after him and requested Troll Captain to allow them to take Lin Yuan's place in the fight. In contrast, Lord J remained silent for a moment before coldly addressing the trolls: “This isn’t honorable. Why should we fear others? Even if we must lose, we should do so like warriors—let someone else take on that burden!”
Lord J's words left Troll Captain feeling quite awkward. Kangaroo and other Mercenaries exchanged glances; clearly, Lord J held some influence in their circle.
“It’s too late; the duel contract has already been submitted. We’re just waiting for our turn in the Fighting Arena now. Please don’t complicate things,” Troll Captain said with a wry smile. Managing a Mercenary Group is much like running a company—before one possesses formidable strength, being diplomatic and smooth-talking is crucial.
“Papaya, just concede when you get in there. Don’t overexert yourself; Gabi is a total brute! Even at my peak condition, I find it challenging to face him—what chance do you have with your frail physique?” Thomas whispered to Lin Yuan. Although Lin Yuan was just a laborer with no remarkable skills or standing within the Mercenary Group, facing off against Berserker Gabi would undoubtedly lead to disaster. It would be better to concede right away than suffer severe injuries first before admitting defeat; after all, as a mere laborer, there was no pride at stake.
“Exactly right, Papaya! You’re not even an official Mercenary or a warrior yet; losing doesn’t matter—we won’t laugh at you,” Shield Warrior Bison added quietly. To him, this quiet laborer was at least not unpleasant enough to warrant ignoring his plight.
Lin Yuan was somewhat taken aback, a bitter smile forming on his lips, but he still politely expressed his gratitude.
During the waiting period, a series of Mercenary Groups arrived one after another. These were small-scale Mercenary Groups, each consisting of three to five members, never exceeding ten, as their teams were all at the e1 level.
However, these individuals were not here for the upcoming fight; the outcome was already obvious. They had come for compensation. Since the Troll had brazenly taken advantage of the situation, it was necessary to offer everyone a little hush money. This was a common practice among Mercenary Teams, as the lower-tier Mechanical Life forms usually operated alone, without descendants or families, and thus lacked any form of inheritance. Therefore, this method of appeasing the masses could also be referred to as an inheritance tax.
Thus began another round of bargaining, during which some cooperative agreements and tasks were surprisingly reached. Those who were unaware of the underlying context would surely be puzzled by what they saw.
As for Lin Yuan, he felt as though he was invisible in this scenario, completely overlooked. Even his opponent Gabi only cast a disdainful glance at him at the beginning and then ignored him entirely.
Everything seemed so natural, yet all the Mercenaries were destined to be disappointed.
Finally, with a mechanical voice echoing through the arena, they were finally queued for the Fighting Arena.
“Attention, Fighting Arena 019 is now open. This match is a private betting duel. The attacking mode requires one party to concede; otherwise, they will be deemed in violation of the rules. Casualties that occur objectively are permitted. If one party dies, the victorious party will incur a fine of One Hundred Thousand Mechanical Coins. The combatants for this duel are: Gabi from the Cyclops Tribe, a Silicon-based Life form with an e1 level strength assessment. He is a registered Mercenary with the Mechanical City’s Mercenary Association and holds combat titles as a Stone Octopus Junior Hunter and Troll Junior Hunter. His combat profession is Berserker and he is a prospective Brute Assault Specialist with a record of 9 wins and 48 losses.”
“The second combatant is d00981547 from Mechanical City’s Secondary Citizen category, a f6 level hybrid Mechanical Warrior known by the codename Papaya. Currently, he is not a registered Mercenary with the Mercenary Association and holds no combat titles or defined combat profession. His previous combat record is nonexistent! Countdown to Combat begins; the fighters are about to be teleported to Fighting Arena 019.”
As soon as this announcement concluded, two energy shields locked onto Lin Yuan and One-Eyed Gabi. In a flash of light, they vanished from the crowd. Immediately afterward, a massive virtual screen appeared before everyone, displaying one hundred numbers representing Fighting Arenas numbered from 1 to 100. The red flashing number indicated an ongoing fight; clicking on it would instantly teleport viewers to that arena. However, there was a limit to seating in the audience area; if it was full, spectators could only watch via virtual live stream.
At that moment, most people had little interest in match 019 and chose instead to watch other ongoing fights. Only those directly involved—such as the Trolls, Kangaroo, and several others including Lord J, Shield Warrior Bison, and Thomas—entered Fighting Arena 019.
Meanwhile, Lin Yuan found himself in an area resembling a desert landscape; this was not virtual but rather an actual Fighting Arena meticulously designed to mimic a desert environment. The gravity levels were maintained at normal conditions. Five hundred meters away stood One-Eyed Gabi, grinning menacingly at him with an aura of violent intent that felt almost tangible; he was likely contemplating how to rush in without waiting for Lin Yuan to concede.
A thousand meters outside this desert arena stood figures like the Trolls; however, their voices could not reach inside due to a transparent barrier separating them from the action within.
“Countdown to Combat... 1, begin!”
As the mechanical voice came to an end, the One-Eyed Gabi roared from five hundred meters away. Its already towering figure, over five meters tall, suddenly inflated like a balloon, expanding more than three times its size. Following this, a massive wooden log, two meters in diameter, appeared in its enormous hands. With a fierce howl, it hurled the log toward Lin Yuan's position!
The speed was unimaginable; this was the One-Eyed Gabi's opening move, the Giant Log Toss, a special ability of its race that was quite boastful!
Before the massive log could crash to the ground, the One-Eyed Gabi was already roaring and charging forward like a frenzied Gorilla. Its speed was astonishing; even if Lin Yuan managed to evade the log, he would not escape the full-force assault that followed!
Outside the transparent barrier, Thomas and Bison were dumbfounded, shouting for him to surrender quickly—there would be no time left soon!
However, to everyone's astonishment, Lin Yuan not only refused to surrender but also, at the moment the giant log came crashing down, his Mechanical Body moved like a wisp of smoke, evading the fierce attack with an unbelievable grace amidst the flying dust!
Seeing this scene, Troll Captain, Thomas, and Bison exchanged shocked glances at Lord J. What a joke! As team leaders, they were well aware of Lord J's ultimate skill—Swift Evasion. This was a necessary skill for any Swift Hunter!
How could that Labor Papaya possibly master such a skill? Although it seemed clumsy compared to Lord J, even the One-Eyed Gabi couldn't match up to him; one glance would likely be enough for Lord J to take it down!
The real question was: when did Lord J become so fond of this Labor Papaya?
A very bad premonition spread through Troll Captain's heart in an instant. (To be continued.)
