As Wang Chao rode back on Little Wolf, his heart remained restless. Even now, he had no idea where Zhang Fusheng was hiding or what his next move would be. It was a situation where Wang Chao was in the light while Zhang Fusheng lurked in the shadows. The full-scale siege of Zombies had already lasted for two weeks, and most areas had been reduced to a state that was nearly impossible to maintain.
However, a portion of the armed forces had managed to keep many Zombies at bay outside the high walls, providing a refuge for countless displaced people. This meant that this wave of Zombie attacks served almost as a filtering process, dividing the Safe Zones into two tiers. One tier consisted of Safe Zones that had been breached by the Zombies; those inside were either torn apart or had vanished without a trace. Such Safe Zones were practically destroyed. The remaining Safe Zones, like Imperial Capital Jing City, were able to hold their ground against the Zombies.
Yet, these resilient Safe Zones were few and far between, and Wang Chao and his companions could not possibly attend to all of Huaxia's Safe Zones in such a short time.
Leaning against the high wall, Wang Chao contemplated how to deal with the Mind Controllers surrounding the capital before heading to Zhonghu Safety Zone. What he did not know was that while he was engaged with the Vice Captain, Zhang Fusheng was also busy on his end. To be honest, if the previous sniper was merely a pawn of the Vice Captain, then the Vice Captain was also a pawn of Zhang Fusheng.
It had been mentioned before that the Vice Captain's arrival was to ascertain who the Mind Controller was. Zhang Fusheng feared that if Wang Chao turned out to be that Mind Controller, he would have no choice but to deal with him first. However, Zhang Fusheng did not want to confront Wang Chao so soon; after all, Wang Chao had once been his best friend. He wanted to keep Wang Chao around until the very last moment.
At the moment the Vice Captain arrived in the capital and met his demise, Zhang Fusheng had already confirmed that Wang Chao was indeed in the capital at an extraordinary mid-level skill set—someone not easily killed. If anyone could take down his capable subordinates, it would only be Wang Chao. Shaking his head, Zhang Fusheng murmured to himself, "In the end, we all have to go; it's just that you left us a bit earlier."
"Prepare for a flanking attack; is the Mind Controller ready?" At this moment, Zhang Fusheng stood several kilometers outside Jing City, surrounded by hundreds of thousands of Zombies who had regrouped behind him and several members of Avengers Alliance. One person stepped forward and whispered, "Everything is ready; we can strike at any time."
Zhang Fusheng nodded and continued asking, "How many waves have we gone through since I arrived here?"
"This is already the fifth wave," replied the individual.
Zhang Fusheng nodded again; it was indeed the fifth wave. Since Wang Chao left Jing City until his own arrival, although these waves of Zombie assaults were controlled by the Mind Controller behind them, they were merely gathered together without any strategic planning. Thus, such Zombie charges posed little substantial threat to Jing City Safe Zone—the safest zone in Huaxia.
Although soldiers atop the high wall remained vigilant, their alertness had significantly diminished compared to their initial state of readiness. As the sixth wave of Zombie Tide approached, there was hardly any sign of alarm or quick reflexes among them. "Commander, another wave of Zombie Tide is coming; should we call General Liu Jie?"
"No need!" came the response. "Director Liu and others just went down to rest; let's not disturb them. Like previous waves of Zombie Tide, this one will also be quickly repelled without concern."
The situation was just as the person had said; like the previous waves of Zombies, these Zombie hordes were scattered and lacked the organized assault of the first attack. Gunfire echoed, and almost no one spoke. As before, these Zombies slowly pressed against the outer wall, resembling moving targets that had come specifically to die.
But at that moment, a figure suddenly surged from the crowd of Zombies, rushing swiftly toward the large gate beneath the high wall. This person's speed was astonishing, so fast that most people barely had time to react; many didn’t even catch sight of this shadow. This person was none other than Zhang Fusheng, alongside the members of the Avengers Alliance.
“Destroy everything inside, kill everyone within!” Zhang Fusheng spoke as if addressing the crowd or perhaps just talking to himself. “This world, this planet, needs to rest!”
As he spoke, Zhang Fusheng kicked open the massive gate with a single blow. Instantly, the Zombies seemed to be invigorated as if they had been given a shot of adrenaline; they began to move en masse, flooding in. With their entrance, hundreds of thousands more Zombies surged from further away, like a wave crashing toward them.
The soldiers atop the wall were already overwhelmed; they fired their weapons frantically. However, without the gate's obstruction, despite suffering heavy casualties, more Zombies continued to pour in. The Commander felt sweat bead on his forehead; he realized he had made a grave mistake. He shouted, “Soldier! Go notify Director Liu immediately!”
“The rest of you must hold your ground!” the Commander yelled. “We are the last line of defense; behind us are our families and friends. We must hold strong!”
But as soon as he uttered those words, he could say no more because Zhang Fusheng had seized his neck tightly. With a sudden twist, he snapped the Commander's neck. The soldier beside him witnessed this scene and closed his eyes forever. It was Zhang Fusheng who committed the murder, and within minutes, nearly all the soldiers atop the wall were slaughtered by members of the Avengers Alliance.
At that moment, a deafening alarm blared throughout the night, waking nearly everyone from their slumber.
“What’s happening?” Tang Feng jumped out of bed almost immediately and grabbed his Tang Dao lying beside him.
