The hospital was shrouded in darkness, with only the faint starlight filtering through the windows to help distinguish the path ahead. The fishing line was thin yet strong, and as Wang Chao stumbled over it, he felt a gust of wind rush from behind. He quickly turned, exerting force underfoot to snap the fishing line, and in a flash, he grasped four or five crossbow bolts in his hand. With a single hand, he applied pressure and broke several of the bolts.
Just as Wang Chao was about to push the door open, a sudden idea struck him. He shouted, "Ah!" and then crouched beside the door to listen for any sounds inside.
Sure enough, after Wang Chao's shout, he heard whispers from within. An elderly voice remarked, "What was that scream? It doesn't sound like a Zombie. Could there be someone outside? We should go check." Another woman's voice chimed in, "Academician Wang, perhaps we shouldn't. We don't know what’s out there; we should stay hidden until morning."
Others echoed her sentiments. Wang Chao listened closely; there were both men and women inside, but he couldn't discern how many people were present.
The elderly man continued, "As healers, it is our duty to save lives. There may be injured people outside right now. I have dedicated my life to medicine; how can I ignore someone in need? The traps we set are designed for Zombies and are quite lethal. If it’s a human out there, they could bleed out if we delay too long. I must go see."
"Xiao Li, come with me. You all stay hidden and remember: if you hear nothing from me, do not come out!" With that, the old man moved to open the door. The hospital was eerily quiet; Wang Chao listened intently from beside the door and couldn't help but admire the old man's dedication to saving lives. As the door creaked open slowly, Wang Chao stepped back a few paces to make his presence known. The old man was startled to see Wang Chao standing unharmed at the door.
"You... who are you?" Xiao Li asked in disbelief.
Wang Chao quickly replied, "Don't be afraid. I am Major Wang Chao from the Jing City Safe Zone. I came to the hospital to collect commonly used medicines and didn't expect to run into you all again. Our Safe Zone is in dire need of doctors; I hope you can come back with us to treat patients and provide timely medical care. Here is my identification." He presented his Officer ID from his Spatial Ring.
In the dim starlight, the old man examined the Officer ID closely before suddenly embracing Wang Chao. "Major Wang! You’ve finally come! Quickly, everyone come out! By the way, I am the director of this hospital; my surname is Wang..." As Director Wang called out, around ten people emerged from various corners of the room—under beds and behind doors.
Wang Chao asked, "How did so many of you end up here?"
Director Wang sighed and explained, "It's a long story. Ever since the Zombie crisis erupted, we've been holed up in this hospital, thinking that the government would come to control and protect it right away. But it's been over a year now with no one showing up. We started with over a thousand people here; now only a few dozen remain to scrape by."
"Don't worry," Wang Chao reassured them. "Once we reach the Safe Zone, everything will be alright. We have set up camp outside; just come out with us—there won't be any danger."
As he spoke, Academician Wang led the group down the stairs. Wang Chao observed that these young men and women were only at the lower levels of silver rank at best, which was insufficient in the current situation. The mutated Zombies outside had reached an unknown level, and Wang Chao had just awakened; he had yet to encounter any mutated Zombies and had no idea what their strength was.
While descending, Dean Wang turned to Wang Chao and said, "Major Wang, tomorrow we will lead the troops to gather medicine. With your help, we will surely achieve twice the result with half the effort."
Wang Chao nodded and replied, "With you knowledgeable people in the Safe Zone, we truly have hope."
Dean Wang looked at Wang Chao, hesitating to speak. His brow was furrowed with concern. Noticing this, Wang Chao said, "I wonder if Dean Wang has something on his mind. Feel free to share it; if I can help in any way, I will do my utmost." Upon hearing this, Dean Wang shook his head and said, "Indeed, there is something."
"What is it?" Wang Chao asked.
"This matter is somewhat embarrassing. When the Zombie crisis broke out, I was on a call with an old friend. However, when the crisis hit, our communication was cut off. He is a Biochemist, and I believe that with his abilities, even without mutation, he could survive in this chaotic world. If possible, I hope you can rescue him."
"A Biochemist?" Wang Chao inquired.
"Yes!" Dean Wang confirmed.
"Alright. Once we return to the Safe Zone tomorrow, we will set out immediately," Wang Chao declared.
After a night without further discussion, the next day, under Dean Wang's leadership, the Guard made significant progress. The path was clear, and within just a few hours, they had collected all the essential medicines from the hospital. They truly emptied it out; however, these supplies would eventually run out. This was just the first stop in their mission to gather medicine; they could not afford to pause for even a moment.
Fast forward a day later, everyone returned to Jing City Safe Zone with Academician Wang and others. Without waiting for rest, Academician Wang immediately began urgent medical treatment processes. Meanwhile, Wang Chao prepared to find Academician Wang's friend, Biochemist Gao Rui. The address was located in the western part of Jing City, and Wang Chao decided to go alone.
This proposal naturally met with opposition from everyone; however, Wang Chao was resolute. As a Biochemist, Gao Rui's contributions to the Safe Zone would be immense—such as in drug development and research on human evolution. Although Professor Sun was a physicist, he had heard of Gao Rui's reputation, indicating Gao Rui's high status and expertise in his field. Such a person must be rescued at all costs.
However, it is uncertain whether Gao Rui is alive or dead now. But since Dean Wang said so, it is likely that Gao Rui is still alive.
In this matter, having more people does not necessarily mean better outcomes. With the Wolf Mount, Wang Chao's speed is faster than taking a high-speed train. Moreover, this time they are only looking for one person, not conducting a large-scale search. After all, the Wolf Mount can ignore terrain and traffic congestion. If the Guard were to go along, they would likely get stuck on the road, and who knows how many days it would take to return.
