When the first rays of sunlight broke into the Imperial Capital, Zhang Fusheng had already arrived, having made the journey in just one day. As Shen Zhitao had said, the Zhang family possessed secret techniques. This particular technique was a refinement created by his grandfather, merging the essence of the Breathing Technique and Fluttering Butterfly Steps. It allowed for incredible speed, but it demanded a significant amount of internal energy from its user. As Shen Zhitao noted, there were likely very few people in the world who could match Zhang Fusheng.
Now that he was in the Imperial Capital, Zhang Fusheng slowed his pace, walking leisurely down the silent streets as if he were taking a stroll. Strangely enough, waves of Zombies seemed oblivious to his presence, or perhaps they saw him but dared not approach. Within a one-meter radius around Zhang Fusheng, there was not a single Zombie.
Zhang Fusheng's walking posture was somewhat peculiar; he moved with a lazy gait reminiscent of an old man taking a walk, dragging his feet along the ground. He appeared completely out of place in his surroundings. "Hey, that Zombie looks quite young; she must have been a beauty in life!" one passerby remarked. "I think I've seen that Zombie on TV before; she was a star," another chimed in. Zhang Fusheng glanced around curiously, as if he were an old farmer newly arrived in town a century ago.
He continued to stroll unabashedly through the streets for about half an hour until he reached the Safe Zone. The response from the Imperial Capital had been remarkably swift; within a short time, they had managed to secure about one-fifth of the city as a Safe Zone. This area was circular, centered around the military district. The outskirts of the city were lined with tall buildings, all connected by high concrete walls that sealed off the gaps between them—clearly designed to keep Zombies at bay.
The Safe Zone had three main gates, all heavily guarded. Despite its large area, only a few gates were opened at any given time for security reasons, preventing any dispersion of military forces. Patrolmen were stationed throughout to prevent too many Zombies from gathering in one place and climbing over the walls. Although such occurrences were nearly impossible, the influential figures in the Imperial Capital could not afford to be complacent.
Zhang Fusheng looked at the towering ten-meter-high concrete wall with a smile on his face. With a single leap and a few agile steps, he effortlessly scaled it without even needing a running start. Once over the wall, he found himself at the edge of the Safe Zone, where there were hardly any residents. He did not see any patrolling soldiers either and shrugged his shoulders before striding forward.
As he moved deeper into the center of the Safe Zone, he could feel an atmosphere that was entirely different from outside—an air of bustling activity that suggested that chaos had not affected these people significantly. Ignoring the commotion around him, Zhang Fusheng headed straight for the Imperial Capital Military District. Upon reaching the entrance, a young soldier from Little Station Mountain noticed that Zhang Fusheng held no military rank or pass and attempted to stop him from entering. Just as he raised his weapon to obstruct him, an older soldier intervened.
It wasn't until Zhang Fusheng's figure disappeared into the distance that the older soldier spoke up: "Are you crazy? You dare to stop that person? Do you want to lose your uniform?"
"But he doesn't have a pass!" protested the younger soldier, feeling wronged by the reprimand. "How can I let him in?"
The older soldier sighed and replied, "Remember this: that face is his pass."
Unbeknownst to Zhang Fusheng, this exchange had taken place at the military district's entrance. He had already arrived beside a Small Building located behind the military compound. His eyes sparkled with intent as if plotting something. Observing that there were no fewer than ten elite troops surrounding the building, he smiled and then retracted his aura before darting out like a flash of lightning.
Behind that building stood two soldiers who stood guard with an air of authority, constantly vigilant of their surroundings. Their expressions indicated that someone very important resided within that Small Building. Suddenly, one soldier felt as if a gust of wind had swept past and turned to his companion: "Brother Wang, I think I just saw something fly by."
Brother Wang glanced around cautiously, noticing that there was nothing in sight—not even a fly. He then said, "Stay alert and don't get distracted."
The man nodded but muttered, "There must be something out there."
On the third floor.
In a quaint little room filled with a faint fragrance, several elderly men with graying hair sat around a simple beechwood tea table, sipping tea and reading the news. Suddenly, one of the elders looked up and said, "It seems the little troublemaker has returned." The elder in the middle nodded and replied, "I sent him out to train; he should be back today."
"Hey, brat, have you gotten used to hanging out on the roof? Why don't you come down?" the elder said.
As soon as he finished speaking, a figure was seen hanging upside down from the smooth ceiling. It was none other than Zhang Fusheng. With a grin, Zhang Fusheng flipped down from the ceiling and walked behind the speaking elder, giving him a back rub while saying, "Grandpa, you still can't escape your sharp eyes." He then greeted the other elders, saying, "Hello, Grandpa Wu; hello, Grandpa Zhao; hello, Grandma Xu."
The elderly men nodded kindly, but Grandma Xu wore a displeased expression. Zhang Fusheng understood that Grandma Xu was one of his grandfather's women but not the main wife, which made her look unfavorably upon him. If anyone were to witness this scene, they would surely marvel at how half of the most powerful people in all of China were gathered in this small study.
"What did you discover on your trip?" Elder Zhang asked.
"As you expected, zombies are evolving. I encountered quite a few mutated zombies along the way; they weren't much of a challenge for me. However, some of these mutated zombies are showing signs of intelligence. I believe that after some time, there will be zombies that even I will find difficult to handle. By the way, while I was on the back mountain of Yucheng, I met someone quite interesting."
"Someone?" Elder Zhang inquired.
"That's right. While I was hunting mutated beasts on the mountain, I suddenly came across a person who seemed to already possess silver-level abilities," Zhang Fusheng replied.
Elder Wu remarked, "Hmm, considering how recently you've seen evolution from Yun Hao to now, it's impressive that this person has reached silver level."
Zhang Fusheng replied, "What’s so great about silver? I am a diamond."
"Nonsense!" Old Zhang said. "With the few of us who have nurtured you since childhood, if you can't reach the level of a diamond, then you truly are worthless!"
