After the commotion on the road, Wang Chao's mood had plummeted to its lowest point. Fortunately, he was an optimistic person; otherwise, anyone else in his situation might have felt like smashing their head against a wall in despair. Wang Chao continued to ride his bicycle, weaving back and forth through the Zombie Tide. The thought of what had happened earlier made him furious. At such a critical moment, how could humanity still be fighting among themselves? Wasn't that absurd?
After cycling for an hour, Wang Chao looked at the city he knew so well, now transformed into a sea of Zombies. At the bus station, along the roadsides, inside cars—Zombies were everywhere. He also spotted quite a few living people in the residential buildings; they looked at him as if he were a fool. After all, the best choice now was to stay home and wait for rescue. People like Wang Chao, who seemed to have no idea what was going on and were recklessly running around the city, were essentially courting death.
Eventually, Wang Chao arrived at the neighborhood where Liu Xiaoxiao lived. Today was supposed to be a nice weekend spent with her, but inexplicably, this chaos had erupted, and his worry escalated. He casually tossed his bicycle aside and cautiously surveyed his surroundings. There were quite a few Zombies nearby, but it seemed they hadn't noticed him yet.
Wang Chao still couldn't figure out how these Zombies detected living humans—was it through smell? Hearing? Sight? Or some other sense? He had seen Zombies without noses, eyes, or ears and simply couldn't understand this academic puzzle.
Shaking his head, he decided to leave those questions for future scientists to solve. His current mission was to find Liu Xiaoxiao as quickly as possible. Entering through the front gate meant a long walk ahead, but after some thought, Wang Chao decided to climb over the wall! The two-meter-high wall was something those Zombies couldn't scale, while he could move quickly on top.
With that in mind, Wang Chao tossed aside the kitchen knife he had been holding and jumped onto a car parked by the wall. He easily climbed up and once on top of the wall, he noticed that numerous Zombies seemed to have radar-like precision as they all turned towards him at once. Wang Chao cursed under his breath, thinking about how he never had this many people chasing him back in school!
Fortunately, he had often climbed walls to skip classes during high school, and now he found himself adept at it again. Indeed, interest is the best teacher; Wang Chao ran swiftly along the wall while the Zombies below often only reacted after he had already passed them. They would then turn around and slowly but surely pursue him. Finally reaching Unit Five, Wang Chao leaped down from the wall and kicked one Zombie before sprinting towards the building's entrance.
The door was closed! Without thinking much, he jumped up and used the protective netting on the first floor to reach outside the second floor. Luckily, this place was an old building only six stories high with ordinary glass windows; with one strike, he shattered a window and slipped into the kitchen on the second floor. Seizing another kitchen knife from there, he cautiously stepped out of the kitchen.
There were three Zombies inside the apartment; Wang Chao dealt with them swiftly.
Liu Xiaoxiao lived on the third floor—just one level away. Wang Chao carefully pushed open this family's door and entered the hallway. He stealthily made his way up to the third floor without making a sound. Upon reaching it, he noticed that Room 301's door was wide open. His heart sank; he knew all too well what it meant when someone didn't have time to close their door.
That indicated Liu Xiaoxiao was in danger.
Wang Chao tightened his grip on the kitchen knife and gently kicked open the ajar door. As soon as it swung open, several Zombies shrieked and staggered toward him. He kicked one away and swiftly dispatched another with his knife. Without hesitation, he kicked the door shut behind him and quickly moved forward to decapitate the fallen Zombie. There were only these two Zombies in the living room.
Liu Xiaoxiao had mentioned yesterday that she was in the bathroom.
Wang Chao did not dare to delay. He quickly walked to the bathroom door and slowly opened it. As he looked in, he saw someone kneeling beside the toilet. Just from the back, Wang Chao recognized that it was his girlfriend, Liu Xiaoxiao.
"Damn it! Don't scare me like this. If you've turned into a Zombie, I won't love you anymore!" Wang Chao said, nudging Liu Xiaoxiao's back with his toe. Liu Xiaoxiao turned her head, and when Wang Chao saw her vacant eyes, he realized that the worst had happened—his girlfriend, Liu Xiaoxiao, had become a mindless Zombie.
Sure enough, Liu Xiaoxiao did not stand up; she simply opened her mouth to bite. Wang Chao instinctively swung his knife but stopped in the next moment.
He hurriedly stepped back two paces and closed the bathroom door, only to hear banging from inside. Although Wang Chao had imagined this scene more than once on his way here, seeing it in reality left him unsure of what to do. He cursed under his breath while checking other rooms in the house, finding no other Zombies.
In the entire house, it was just him and his girlfriend, now a Zombie.
…………
"You said you were cold and didn’t come looking for me. I went to find you, but you didn’t want to see me, saying you were disgusted with me. But I know you were just afraid I would be cold!" Wang Chao said as he looked at Liu Xiaoxiao, tied to the coffee table.
The only response he received was the emotionless growl of a Zombie.
"You say you're not pretty and have a bad personality," Wang Chao continued, tears streaming down his face uncontrollably. "You often lose your temper with me, complaining that I have no house, no car, no savings. Why should I love you? Why should I be sad? Wasn't it you who stayed by my side when I was unemployed? Encouraged me when everyone looked down on me? Protected me when everyone opposed us being together…"
At this point, Wang Chao was already sobbing uncontrollably.
He wiped his tears and continued, "You liar! You clearly said that even if the whole world looked down on me and opposed us, you'd stay by my side! Didn't we agree to have a few kids and what names we would give them…"
As he spoke, Wang Chao couldn't help but reach out to touch Liu Xiaoxiao's face. Her face was covered in dark red clots of dried blood and her hair was disheveled; she looked terrible. Yet in Wang Chao's eyes, Liu Xiaoxiao remained beautiful. Just as his hand reached out, Liu Xiaoxiao opened her mouth to bite. Wang Chao tightly held her head so she couldn't move while one hand gently stroked her face.
The entire scene appeared so paradoxical, both violent and gentle. Death and survival twisted together in that moment.
"I... I wish I could die with you!" said Wang Chao, tears streaming down his face.
