The dog whip was unavoidable for Wang Chao. Even if he immediately leaned back, the whip would still strike his face. Wang Chao thought to himself, today was indeed a day of misfortune—no, it was more like he had been wronged by a dog. Damn it, he felt like a hero who had died before achieving anything, tears welling up in his eyes. He hadn't even seen his girlfriend yet and was already reduced to a Zombie. To make matters worse, he had been bitten by a Zombie Dog. If he became a Zombie, he would undoubtedly be one with missing limbs.
Wang Chao felt despondent, wondering if he had committed heinous acts in his past life. Why was his fate so twisted in this life? In an instant, countless thoughts raced through his mind as the dog whip approached his face. That miraculous power he hoped for never appeared. It was over; this time he was really going to die.
At that moment, a sound sliced through the air. Before Wang Chao could discern what it was, the Zombie Dog in front of him suddenly shifted to the right as if struck by something on its left side. As the Zombie Dog flew to the right, the whip grazed Wang Chao's face, leaving a burning pain. He instinctively reached up to touch his face and found no blood—he had merely been grazed by the whip. The pain was intense; if that whip had hit him squarely, he certainly wouldn't see the sun rise again.
Then he looked toward where the Zombie Dog landed and saw several crossbow bolts piercing its body, with a fatal shot having gone through its head. The dog wobbled but ultimately collapsed, lifeless. Wang Chao then noticed figures running toward him from not far away—three men and one woman among them. One of them held a crossbow; it was clear that this person had saved him.
Wang Chao hurried toward them, saying as he ran, "Impressive skills! If it weren't for you, I would have become that Zombie Dog's meal! My name is Wang Chao; may I ask how to address you all?"
As he approached the group, Wang Chao opened his arms enthusiastically to give Crossbow Brother a big hug. However, Crossbow Brother seemed to ignore him completely and ran past him. Wang Chao felt embarrassed and thought how cold this guy was. He quickly pretended to do some chest exercises to cover up his awkwardness.
Following Crossbow Brother was Steel Blade Brother. Wang Chao glanced at him and realized that this guy wielded a real weapon—a hefty machete that looked sharp and imposing compared to his own kitchen knife. Next came a tall woman wearing flat shoes; she was only slightly shorter than Wang Chao, probably around five foot seven. Finally, there was a muscular man bringing up the rear; Wang Chao felt like an elementary school student next to him.
The group passed by Wang Chao without acknowledging him except for the woman who smiled at him. Feeling dejected, Wang Chao thought they were truly aloof. The woman looked decent enough but had a mix of dirt and grime on her face from what seemed like long travels. Wang Chao smiled back at her.
Since they were ignoring him, there was no point in sticking around any longer; he needed to hurry to Liu Xiaoxiao's side. With that thought in mind, Wang Chao picked up his damaged kitchen knife and headed toward his scattered backpack. Just as he placed his hand on it, a slightly hoarse voice called out, "Give me the backpack!"
Wang Chao turned around to see all four of them staring at the backpack in his hands.
"Oh, this? I took it from the supermarket; if you want some, I can share," Wang Chao replied nonchalantly. After all, they had saved him; it seemed fair to offer something in return.
However, Crossbow Brother looked at the approaching Zombies and said firmly, "I meant all of it!"
Wang Chao furrowed his brow and said, "No, I need to find my girlfriend. She might not have any food, and this..."
Before Wang Chao could finish his sentence, a crossbow bolt whizzed past his ear, cutting off his words. Crossbow Brother said, "I saved you, but that doesn't mean I won't kill you. Put down your backpack, and I'll let you go. Otherwise..." He raised the crossbow in his hand, having already reloaded it in a matter of seconds.
Wang Chao fell silent.
He heard a woman say, "Don't doubt what he says; he always means what he says."
There were four people on the other side, and he was alone. No matter how he looked at it, he couldn't win. Wang Chao realized that this group was after his food all along. Anger surged within him, but he knew this wasn't the time to act recklessly. He spoke slowly and deliberately, "I can give you the backpack, but leave me a bottle of water and a bag of bread. Otherwise, I'll throw the backpack into the horde of Zombies!"
The four glanced at the approaching Zombies and nodded.
Wang Chao pulled out a bottle of mineral water and a bag of bread from his backpack, stuffing them haphazardly into his clothes before placing the backpack on the ground. He then turned to leave, muttering to himself, "Damn it, shooting without warning—what a surprise." The woman coming to retrieve the backpack heard him and let out a laugh. She called out to Wang Chao's back, "I think we'll meet again. My name is Shui Yun'er."
Wang Chao heard her words but didn't turn around; he continued pushing his mountain bike.
The woman glanced at Wang Chao, picked up the backpack, and returned to her group. The four quickly retreated down a narrow path.
In an inexplicable sense, Wang Chao felt something aiming at him. He turned around but saw nothing. A strange feeling crept over him, yet he could only keep riding his bike. This sensation made him extremely anxious, as if a Zombie Dog were watching him.
In the distance, Shui Yun'er rested her hand on her crossbow and said, "Brother Zhuang, why bother? Survival is hard in this apocalypse."
Zhuang Peng turned to look at Shui Yun'er, then glanced at the gradually receding Wang Chao, and said, "That kid's eyes just now flashed with a desire to kill us. He's dangerous. I have a feeling that sooner or later, he will become our enemy."
Shui Yun'er remained silent, merely patting Zhuang Peng's hand on the crossbow. Zhuang Peng nodded, lowered the crossbow aimed at Wang Chao, and then turned to leave.
At the same time, Wang Chao's feeling of restlessness vanished.
