Su Ruolan felt a surge of excitement within her, eager to find an opportunity to ask her question. Although they were following Uncle Qin's troop, they did not reside entirely within it and had set up their own camp separately. That evening, the troops began their watch and rest. With autumn already upon them, the soldiers in Uncle Qin's unit wore thin clothing; many were clad in nothing more than a light autumn shirt. Even with their abilities, their faces still turned pale from the cold. Su Ruolan rummaged through her supplies; she had collected enough clothing from the supermarket in the mysterious building complex. Since the four of them could not wear all of it, she decided to take out a bundle of cotton clothes. Though it was not a large quantity, it could still provide warmth for some of the weaker individuals. With her backpack filled with clothes, Su Ruolan approached Uncle Qin's tent.
"Sister Su, hello! Is there something you need?" Zhan Jie asked.
"Is Uncle Qin in?" Su Ruolan politely inquired, glancing at the lean and capable man.
"Yes, just a moment. I'll let him know you're here," Zhan Jie replied as he lifted the tent flap and stepped inside.
"Ah, Lan girl has come! Come in quickly; it's quite cold outside," Uncle Qin's hearty voice echoed from within.
Su Ruolan entered with her heavy backpack. Uncle Qin sat cross-legged on the ground, where newspapers and dry leaves were spread out to insulate against the chill of the earth.
"Lan girl, my place is rather simple; make yourself comfortable. What brings you here today?" Uncle Qin gestured casually, making it feel less like a humble tent and more like a luxurious reception room.
Su Ruolan smiled lightly and explained her purpose. "Uncle Qin, hello. It's getting quite chilly now. While collecting supplies earlier, we found quite a few winter garments that we can't use all of, so we brought some for you."
"Really? That's wonderful! Now our injured can stay warm," Shao Jie exclaimed joyfully upon hearing this news. He had been worried about how cold it would get at night; any amount was better than nothing.
"Then I won't be polite; thank you," Uncle Qin said as he gestured for Shao Jie to take the clothes Su Ruolan had retrieved from her backpack. "You go arrange this for those who need it most."
"Uncle Qin, aren't you going to keep one for yourself?" Su Ruolan asked curiously as she noticed Uncle Qin intended for Shao Jie to take everything.
"I don't need one; my constitution is rather special, and I am not afraid of the cold," Uncle Qin replied with a slight smile directed at Su Ruolan.
"Uncle Qin, there's something I'd like to ask you, if that's alright?" Su Ruolan hesitated for a moment before finally voicing her question.
"What's wrong? Is something bothering you? Come out, and let Qin Uncle help you," Qin Uncle said with a kind expression, gently encouraging her.
"Are you... are you part of the Huaxia Army?" Su Ruolan hesitated, biting her lip as she asked. In this apocalyptic world, the Huaxia Army was a target of the Government Army. Asking such a question was risky; if they were with the Government Army, their relationship would likely be severed immediately, and worse, she could be captured as a traitor. If they were indeed the Huaxia Army, there was a chance they could be allies, but she could also be mistaken for a spy from the Government Army, with her life hanging in the balance.
"How do you know about the Huaxia Army? What do you think of it? Do you believe it should exist?" Qin Uncle continued to smile, but suddenly, Su Ruolan felt the warmth of his smile fade. A sense of danger arose within her, an instinct honed through numerous close calls warning her of impending threat.
"I've encountered members of the Huaxia Army, which is how I know about this organization. Given the current state of the world, any effort that can kill Zombies, save humanity, and rebuild civilization should be respected," Su Ruolan replied after some thought, providing a cautious answer.
"Heh, your previous statement may seem neutral, but it actually reveals your stance; you sympathize with and support the Huaxia Army. Aren't you afraid of being caught and killed?" Qin Uncle suddenly turned cold, his expression darkening as he revealed an imposing demeanor. This was the first time he showed such seriousness in front of Su Ruolan.
"Whether it's sympathy or opposition, these are internal conflicts among humans that can be resolved through negotiation. If humanity continues to fight amongst itself, Zombies will surely surpass and eliminate us all, leading to our mutual destruction," Su Ruolan said fearlessly.
"Good, you have spirit and courage. I'll be honest; we are indeed part of the Huaxia Army," Qin Uncle softened his tone, looking at Su Ruolan with kindness. This girl was remarkable; despite his heavy pressure, she maintained her principles and was worthy of trust.
"Really? That's great! Do you know Qi Runzhou?" Excitement bubbled within Su Ruolan, and she poured a glass of water for Qin Uncle, watching him nervously yet eagerly.
"I know him. Who are you to him?" Qin Uncle took the cup and casually asked while blowing on the steam.
"I... I'm his... fellow townsfolk," she stammered. The words "I'm his wife" almost slipped out but were quickly retracted. Given her current appearance, if he saw her like this, it would surely shock him. How would she explain this identity? Would he recognize her just by seeing her? Thoughts raced through Su Ruolan's mind.
"He is our Captain. Actually, I'm here to meet up with him. If you're looking for him, come with us," Qin Uncle said as he noticed the worry on Su Ruolan's face and couldn't help but chuckle inwardly. Was she yet another girl enchanted by Runzhou's charm?
The surprise came too quickly; it was like finding something precious after searching everywhere. Su Ruolan hadn't expected to encounter the Huaxia Corps, directly linked to Runzhou. "Alright then, thank you for your help," she said gratefully before leaving, unable to hide her joy.
"Sister Su, what's got you so happy?" Cheng Xi asked curiously as he noticed the smile on her face.
"Yes, Company Commander, did you find a treasure?" Li Yuxuan asked nonsensically.
"Yuxuan, let me ask you, who do you know from the Huaxia Corps?" Although she was happy, Su Ruolan still sought confirmation from Li Yuxuan.
"Qi Commander, and his adjutant Lin Feng," Li Yuxuan recalled.
"Have you heard of Vice Captain Qin?" Su Ruolan continued to ask, feeling nervous and fearing a bad answer.
Li Yuxuan scratched her head, thinking for a long time before suddenly making a realization. "Yes, I heard Lin Feng mention once that they have a Vice Commander Qin, but he got separated from them during the encirclement."
Su Ruolan looked at the three of them and nodded with a smile, feeling a heavy weight lift from her heart.
"Oh, so you mean Uncle Qin is Vice Commander Qin, and this team is the Huaxia Corps?" Li Yuxuan slapped her forehead and suddenly connected the dots.
"Ah, that's great! We finally have a lead on them. This luck is just too good. Sister Su, quickly tell them about H Base; we can head back now," Cheng Xi also understood and smiled happily.
"No, we need to clarify whether my uncle was behind this before we can tell them about H Base," Li Yuxuan suddenly opposed.
"Yes. Until we figure this out, there will always be a rift between the two teams," Su Ruolan agreed.
