Looking at the yellow bun, Su Ruolan felt it was an unexpected stroke of luck.
"Ruo Lan, I have good news and bad news for you. Which one do you want to hear first?" Reset said, a mix of surprise and helplessness in his voice.
"Let's hear the bad news first," Su Ruolan replied without hesitation, her heart-shaped face full of determination.
"The bad news is that the more elements you have, the slower your cultivation will be, especially since they are all at different levels. It's easy to lose balance," Reset said with a hint of bitterness.
"And the good news?" Su Ruolan paused before continuing to ask.
"The good news is that the more complete your elements are, the more stable your space becomes. The energy you can draw from it increases, and once you accumulate enough, you can level up," Reset explained gently.
"Got it," she said, sensing the energy in the room shifting. It seemed that Li Yuxuan's advancement had come to an end. Su Ruolan exited the space along with Kong Xiang and Cheng Xi.
Li Yuxuan opened his eyes and saw Su Ruolan and the others standing beside him. It felt surreal; his nose tinged with a bit of emotion as he said, "I’m not dead?! That's great! I thought I would never see you all again."
"Welcome back," Su Ruolan said, offering him a warm smile, her eyes slightly moist. Throughout their journey, she had come to see Li Yuxuan as a younger brother, and seeing him safe brought her immense relief.
Kong Xiang stepped forward and gave Li Yuxuan a big hug. Both were a bit emotional but managed to keep their feelings in check.
"What about the others?" Li Yuxuan asked after his initial excitement faded.
"I'm sorry, but everyone else has sacrificed themselves," Cheng Xi, who had arrived later and was more familiar with the situation, revealed the harsh truth despite feeling reluctant.
Su Ruolan felt a wave of sadness wash over her as she heard this news again, even though she had been briefed by Cheng Xi earlier. Li Yuxuan sat dumbfounded on the edge of the bed, unable to comprehend how they had lost so many people in such a short distance, especially those vibrant lives they were so familiar with.
They never expected to fall not to the jaws of Zombies but at the hands of humans. It was a bitter irony. Su Ruolan walked with them into the courtyard, gathering all the deceased—whether they were members of the Ability group, Milu's subordinates, or innocent youths—into one place for unified cremation. Inside that room, over ten beautiful young men lay there, each shot in the head, their eyes wide open, filled with anger and resentment. In a world where lives were as insignificant as grass, not only women were reduced to mere playthings; even men inevitably faced the fate of being weak before overwhelming power.
This time, Milu and her group had escaped in a hurry and could not take all their supplies. Su Ruolan distributed large backpacks to Cheng Xi, Kong Xiang, and Li Yuxuan to collect anything useful they could find. As they searched through the area, Su Ruolan demonstrated her excellent quality of thriftiness by implementing a sweeping measure to gather everything usable into their storage space. Along the lakeshore, outside the wooden cabin, Su Ruolan and Cheng Xi built an enormous warehouse together, organizing and categorizing their items. They constructed a wooden cabin with six rooms reserved for Su Ruolan, Reset, Kong Xiang, Cheng Xi, Monet, and Bat King. Although there were currently few occupants, Su Ruolan felt a sense of warmth.
Milu's base was small but contained many supplies; there was enough food for Su Ruolan and her group to last ten days. What surprised them most was that there was a significant stockpile of gasoline sufficient for five uses. Despite the urgency of their situation, Su Ruolan still waited at the base for a while; however, Dragon Jade never returned.
While cleaning up the battlefield, Li Yuxuan discovered a piece of information hidden in Milu's secret compartment beneath her bed, contained within an exquisite box. Upon opening it, he found a secret telegram that primarily discussed two matters: one was to commend Milu for her outstanding contributions to the "relife" project and grant her the rank of Second Lieutenant; the other was a request for her to continue providing capable women or female Ability users, particularly focusing on those aged between eighteen and thirty. The message revealed content that was too significant and shocking; Su Ruolan instructed everyone to keep it confidential as it was not the right time for announcements or discussions.
Su Ruolan decided to press on; no news was good news. She hoped Dragon Jade was still alive and that they would meet again in the future. As Su Ruolan and her group continued their journey, H Base faced its own life-and-death crisis.
Zhang Yu led ten thousand regular troops from S Base equipped with advanced weaponry as they rapidly advanced toward H Base. Strangely enough, they encountered no Zombie hordes along the way; any scattered Zombies were easily crushed by Zhang Yu's forces. The harvested Zombie Crystals successfully activated a batch of Ability users.
With troops at their doorstep and pressure mounting, Zhang Yu sat in his vehicle looking at H Base's tightly shut gates. He lifted his teacup and gently blew on the hot tea while smiling mysteriously.
"Listen up inside! We are the army from S Base here to rescue you. Do not be afraid; you can rise up alongside the Government Army to defeat the rebels together. Rebels inside! You have time to consider; as long as you surrender, we will disarm you without bloodshed and let bygones be bygones." The messenger from S Base shouted through a loudspeaker seven times in succession until his voice echoed far into the city.
In an emergency meeting room, Machi Bin, Zhang Youqi, Qin Zhi Han, and others gathered together for discussions. "Zhang Yu is coming on strong with superior weapons; we definitely can't defeat him even if we rely on our fortifications. If we engage him directly, our casualties will be severe," said A Series of Company Commander who replaced Li Yuxuan.
"But we can't retreat without fighting! They have come from afar and must be exhausted; if we mobilize our forces now while they are unprepared, we can catch them off guard," Wang Zhi argued.
"Actually, the Huaxia Army is no longer in contact with us. As long as they agree to our conditions, we can consider cooperating with them," Commander Qian said.
"How can that be? Have you forgotten the siege by S Base against our base? The soldiers who died—those are blood debts. Qin Zhi Han, what do you think?" Ma Commander asked.
"Until the truth about Commander Li's death is clear, I suggest we avoid contact with them for now. If we mistakenly recognize a thief as our father, it would be a betrayal to those fallen brothers. This battle must be fought, but we need to strategize while engaging in combat. Although we have surplus supplies, we cannot sustain a prolonged war. If they besiege us, we'll be trapped. Moreover, we have no reinforcements, and their numbers far exceed ours. Even if we win, it may be a pyrrhic victory," Qin Zhi Han pondered carefully.
"What will the common people here think? They might believe we've abandoned them. I disagree with retreating; everyone prepare for battle," Ma Commander refused.
"Understood." Seeing that Ma Commander had given the order, everyone ceased their discussions, saluted, and left to make battle preparations.
