On the evening of September 6th, in an effort to stall the Government Army, Qin Zhi Han invited Anji, the Deputy Company Commander of Cheetah Squad, Zhu Jun, the City Guard Leader, and Huang Dacheng, the Security Defense Team Leader, to his residence to "build a Great Wall together." After the speech, Qin Zhi Han accepted their invitations for a friendly sparring session and provided guidance on Ability usage. The bonds between men are often forged through conflict, yet all three were staunch loyalists of Jiang and Colonel Zhu, making it impossible to sway them to change sides. Now, Qin Zhi Han's mission was to keep them occupied in the house, allowing Bai Zhen, Jackson Wang, and others to act.
Qin Zhi Han was not particularly skilled at card games and ended up losing quite a bit—items he had recently received or exchanged at various events, such as half a pack of cigarettes, a valuable handgun, an Omega watch, a Swiss Army knife, and a small bottle of Erguotou. The captains were all smiles as they won these items that were nearly impossible to acquire in the apocalypse without exorbitant rewards.
As the light began to fade, according to plan, Bai Zhen, Jackson Wang, and others had already notified their respective action teams and announced their operational slogan: "Shining the Earth." They rolled up their left sleeves and tied them off around their bare arms as armbands for identification. With bullets loaded in their chambers and knives raised in hand, they stood ready to eliminate nearby enemies.
At 9:45 PM, a sudden flurry of footsteps approached. A soldier rushed in and knocked on the door urgently. "Report, Company Commander! A group of unfamiliar Ability users has just demanded that we disarm and surrender our weapons. Squad Leader Liu is concerned and sent me to consult with you."
"What? Is that true? We have never received such an order," Anji and Huang Dacheng exclaimed in shock as they exchanged glances. "In H Base, aside from our squads, where could another Ability team have come from? This is suspicious. Captain Qin, this is urgent; we need to leave immediately." They quickly grabbed the spoils from the table, bending down to pick up anything that fell.
"I need to see what's going on too; I'm leaving as well," Zhu Jun added as he took his leave.
"Gentlemen, if that's the case, I won't keep you any longer. Safe travels," Qin Zhi Han said casually, fearing that any attempt to retain them might raise their suspicions.
Watching them disappear from sight, Qin Zhi Han hurriedly made his way to the secret command center for Torch Operation. According to the original plan set for ten o'clock that night, Jackson Wang would lead the civilian group to eliminate nearby military forces while Bai Zhen would take a team to seize the armory. Liu Dan would lead another team to capture the city gate while Qin Zhi Han would concentrate his forces on taking down H Base's command center. With information now leaked, there was no time left to wait.
"Immediately launch the signal flare; it's time to act," Qin Zhi Han commanded.
A multicolored firework shot through the dark night sky, illuminating H Base entirely. The various action teams sprang into motion upon receiving their orders. Some civilian Ability users within the City Guard turned against them as well; several high-ranking officials remained silent about attacks on civilians and issued no commands. Anji, Zhu Jun, and Huang Dacheng were unable to return to their teams in time due to delays. Many squads were unprepared and surrendered without resistance.
Upon learning of this information, Colonel Jiang flew into a rage while Colonel Zhu lost his composure entirely and rushed to Colonel Jiang's residence with a look of desperation.
"All thanks to your well-trained subordinate, Qin Zhi Han has actually rebelled. What are you going to do?" Colonel Jiang glared at Colonel Zhu, his gaze sharp enough to pierce through the heart.
"Brother, I had no idea he was this kind of person. It was you who encouraged him to give speeches, inflating his ego. He actually thinks he can replace us! We should report him and make sure he pays for this," Colonel Zhu said, filled with regret and anger.
"The only option now is to abandon this place and seek refuge with Base S and Commander Zhang. At that point, we can have Qin Zhi Han collude with the Huaxia Army and ask Commander Zhang to send troops to eliminate him without a trace," Colonel Jiang said, glancing at the surging crowd below before decisively turning to leave.
Qin Zhi Han looked at the empty command center, frowning slightly. He hadn't expected Colonel Jiang to have a backup plan and withdraw completely. Regardless, the Torch Operation had achieved victory at the cost of one life and ten injuries, capturing nearly 4,000 people.
"Immediately inform Commander Ma of our victory. Everyone can move towards Base H," Qin Zhi Han instructed Bai Zhen to take care of it right away.
In a wealthy merchant's house in the Three Districts, several people were gathered for a secret meeting. "I never expected these commoners to be so powerful; they actually captured Base H in such a short time. Young Commander still wants us to create chaos and delay time—this is basically a blitzkrieg," one Sharp Blade Member said, puzzled.
"Yeah, I didn't expect Jiang Zhu to be so useless; they’re nothing but decorative pillows. If I had known it would take this long to strategize, Young Commander could have taken them down directly. Now we have Qin Zhi Han, who seems tough to crack," another team member sighed repeatedly.
Everyone exchanged glances and shook their heads. "We can only wait for Young Commander's new orders," concluded the Sharp Blade Captain. "In the meantime, let's focus on gathering information and hiding our identities. Once Young Commander's orders come through, we will raise our flags and act. At that point, we will be the great contributors to reclaiming Base H."
At the same time, in the command center of Base H, Qin Zhi Han issued a series of directives: reducing the intensity of resource requisition from the wealthy families in the Two Three Districts and reverting to an early apocalypse employment tax system—where those needing military protection would pay according to their headcount. This significantly alleviated pressure on middle-class families; increasing resource distribution for ordinary citizens in Zone Five based on labor provided for base repairs and services, ensuring everyone received food for every two meals; offering free porridge for the elderly, disabled, or sick; welcoming surrendered captives into the Huaxia Four Corps without pursuing past offenses; ensuring all military personnel shared meals and accommodations with ordinary citizens without taking any money from them; and requiring corresponding compensation for any requisitioned resources. This series of measures greatly stabilized the tumultuous situation.
At Base S, in the conference room of the command building, Zhang Jianzhong, Zhang Yu, Xu Qiubai, Xu Bo, and several senior generals were in a meeting.
"I knew this kid was not an ordinary person; I just didn't expect him to turn against us instead of being used for our benefit," Zhang Yu lamented.
"Younger Commander even humbled himself to befriend him; I can't believe he turned out to be so ungrateful," Xu Qiubai said angrily.
"Since that's the case, there's no need to hold back. Yu, lead the elite troops to attack H Base immediately. We must take it back. This time, we need to get ahead of Jiang Zhilin," Zhang Jianzhong decisively stated. Though he was in his middle age, his handsome features were still evident—thick eyebrows, large eyes, and a tall, well-proportioned figure. He possessed both the authority of a military leader and the elegant demeanor of a nobleman, making it easy for others to overlook his ruthless and bloody nature.
"Understood, Commander," Zhang Yu replied as he stood up and saluted sharply, his eyes filled with determination.
At G Base, Jiang Zhilin was inspecting the troops. Rows of soldiers stood straight and orderly, ready for review, while numerous aircraft, artillery, and tanks were parked nearby. All the soldiers looked at their commander with fervent admiration.
Jiang Zhilin was a typical southerner—slim and refined, shaped by the trials of the apocalypse into a more capable leader. His deep-set eyes had a way of drawing people in; many young women and married ladies felt as if they were being gazed upon by an intelligent and handsome man when they saw Jiang Zhilin's photos or encountered him in person, their hearts racing.
Satisfied with his hundreds of thousands of troops, Jiang Zhilin halted the ceremonial vehicle in the center of the square and passionately addressed everyone: "Comrades, today we hold this military parade to showcase our powerful army and advanced weaponry, to boost morale and inspire our spirits. We have the capability to defend humanity's living space, to defeat the encirclement of Zombies, and to eliminate all dissidents. Let us unite around the government led by President Dai Guozheng, fighting for humanity's freedom, honor, dignity, and survival! Do you have confidence?"
"Yes!" echoed the crowd in the square.
"Your voices are not loud enough. Fight for the strength of our nation and the fate of humanity! Tell me loudly, do you have confidence?" Jiang Zhilin asked again.
"Yes!" This time, the response from the square was deafening.
Jiang Zhilin nodded in satisfaction. He looked toward B Base, his expression resolute. Qin Wujiao, no matter where you escape to, your end is destined to be at my hands.
