Qin Zhi Han seemed to have left the dormitory building. Su Ruolan circulated the energy within her body, and everything returned to normal; she could move freely now. This operation had exposed the existence of the Monet Giant Wolf, and it was no longer safe here. Fortunately, the food and water in the space were still abundant, so there was no need to worry about supplies. Su Ruolan extended her consciousness to sense the movements in the nearby area. This was a nine-story mansion, with two households per staircase, repurposed as military dormitories after the apocalypse. The Wolf Brigade consisted of 100 members, most of whom lived in this building. Aside from the Company Commander, who had a separate unit, everyone else shared rooms with two or three people. Qin Zhi Han lived on the ninth floor, next door to Bai Zhen and Jackson Wang. Now that the elevator was out of service, they could only use the stairs.
"You know, it's wartime now; why does the Company Commander still have to squeeze in with us for a night? There are empty rooms available," Jackson Wang said as he stirred his hot porridge and took a sip.
"She's a girl; the Company Commander is just being respectful. What do you know? All you think about is food," Bai Zhen scoffed.
"I don't understand? Why don't you cook the porridge then? Just let me heat it up later; I'm afraid she'll wake up and find it cold. I'm done; I'm going to sleep now. You keep an eye on things," Jackson Wang yawned, waved his hand, and settled down on the sofa.
Bai Zhen adjusted his glasses, shrugged his shoulders, and filled half a bowl with hot porridge for himself. Silly him; did he really think the Company Commander needed him to heat her porridge? It was clearly to avoid disturbing Su Ruolan's rest.
Su Ruolan changed into a black fitted sports outfit and activated her Wood Elemental Ability. A Wood Vine sprouted from her palm, which she tied into a knot on the window frame. Grabbing hold of the Wood Vine, she leaped out of the window, lightly tapping her toes against the wall as she descended two floors in an instant.
At that moment, a member of the Wolf Squad burst into the first floor and shouted to his teammates, "Quickly, brothers! Come with me to rescue Meng Squad Leader! Those Cheetah Squad bastards are fighting; Meng Squad Leader has been seriously injured!"
"What happened?" asked one of the squad members who was muscular and robust.
"Meng Squad Leader went to get medical supplies, and they took advantage of him and started a fight for no reason! Squad Leader Shi, you need to hurry; if you wait any longer, it will be too late!" Eleven reported urgently, nearly tripping over his words.
"What? That's outrageous! Gather all the uninjured brothers and let's go! The Company Commander isn't here; Jiang Wei, go report this to Instructor Bai!" Shilei was quick-tempered and had a fiery personality; upon hearing that his comrade was in trouble, he exploded like a firecracker.
"Understood." Jiang Wei stood at attention and saluted before immediately running upstairs. A group of squad members quickly assembled and left the dormitory building.
On the eleventh floor of the building across the street, watching the members of Wolf Squad leave, Jiang Yan smiled slightly. With a wave of his hand, a group of men in black shot grappling hooks onto the rooftop of the lodging building. The five-pronged hooks embedded into the balcony wall and held tight. The black-clad figures swiftly descended on ropes, gliding down to the top floor, then flipped over to reach the balcony of the Ninth Floor. Before the apocalypse, the top floor had been designed with an open balcony for better lighting.
Armed with assault rifles, these men in black advanced cautiously.
Meanwhile, next door, Bai Zhen suddenly sensed an inexplicable danger. He hurriedly woke the bleary-eyed Jackson Wang, made a "shh" gesture, and pointed across the street. The two exchanged understanding glances, gripping their automatic pistols as they slowly approached the door.
Downstairs, a Hummer screeched to a halt. Qin Zhi Han and Zhang Yu stepped out of the vehicle and headed inside. Upon seeing that the first floor was empty, their expressions changed instantly, and they rushed upstairs. They quickly climbed through each level—first floor, second floor, third floor—and when they pushed open the security door to the Ninth Floor, they came face to face with Bai Zhen and Jackson Wang, who were stepping out with their guns drawn.
Qin Zhi Han kicked his door open forcefully. The curtains on the balcony fluttered as he entered to find the room empty.
He opened Su Ruolan's room only to discover she was gone.
After checking around, everything in the room appeared intact with no signs of a struggle, except for slight damage at the edge of the balcony that looked like it had been stepped on.
Qin Zhi Han glanced at the balcony and suddenly leaped up, gripping the top edge of the balcony wall. With an incredible pull-up motion, he flipped himself onto the rooftop terrace. Crouching down, he immediately noticed numerous hook holes in the forty-centimeter-high concrete wall. He turned to leave.
At that moment, the door to the rooftop opened, and Zhang Yu appeared. Seeing Qin Zhi Han, he exclaimed, "Are you some kind of monster? How did you manage to get up here like that?!" Looking past Qin Zhi Han, he added in surprise, "The Squad? Why are they here looking for Ruolan?"
"I don't know. Ruolan is in danger," Qin Zhi Han shook his head.
"Isn't this a secret squad? No one who falls into their hands has ever been seen alive again. Could Ruolan have become their target because of this battle?" Zhang Yu speculated. Watching Qin Zhi Han about to pass him by, he asked, "Do you want to come back to S Base with me? I guarantee there's more room for development than at H Base."
"Thank you, but my answer remains the same—no," Qin Zhi Han replied.
"Hey, at worst I won't compete with you for that woman anymore," Zhang Yu said as he raked his fingers through his hair in frustration, deliberately ignoring a sudden pang of pain in his heart. He sincerely added, "I really admire you. I'll ask one last time—will you come with me?"
Qin Zhi Han suddenly approached Zhang Yu, grabbing his collar and saying, "She is not an object, not something to be given away. If you are not sincere, stay away from her. We have different interests, and I won't go to S Base with you."
Watching Qin Zhi Han walk away, Zhang Yu lost his usual playful demeanor, his expression darkening. Since it had come to this, he wouldn't hold back any longer.
"Young Commander, the rescue team sent by the Commander has arrived. Should we leave now?!" Inside the villa, Xu Bo said to the returning Zhang Yu, barely concealing his excitement. "Do you know who is leading the rescue team?"
Seeing Xu Bo's elation, Zhang Yu felt a surge of excitement as he pushed open the door. A thin man with a pale complexion stood up and saluted, "Young Commander."
"Just glad you're back." Zhang Yu embraced Xu Qiubai tightly, tears welling in his eyes. Xu Qiubai also struggled to suppress his trembling body.
Once their emotions settled, the two began discussing what had happened since their last separation. It turned out that after Xu Qiubai was injured, blood had stained the bullet pendant that Zhang Yu had given him. This activated the internal teleportation space and sent him back to S Base beside Zhang Commander. He learned that this was a life-saving formation forged for Young Commander by a hermit family before the apocalypse; it could only be used once and would be rendered useless afterward. Although the Commander's wife had advised Young Commander to keep the pendant close, in a moment of crisis, Young Commander had decided to leave this bullet with him. Because of this life-saving grace, Xu Qiubai became even more loyal to Zhang Yu.
Upon hearing that a large group of Zombies was attacking H Base and receiving a distress call from Zhang Shou, Xu Qiubai volunteered to lead a team to support H Base. Working in coordination with Colonel Jiang and Colonel Zhu's teams, they temporarily repelled the Zombies.
"Xu Bo, gather all the supplies from the warehouse; we are heading back to S Base. This place won't hold for long," Zhang Yu instructed Xu Bo.
"Young Commander, this batch of supplies should help alleviate S Base's predicament," Xu Qiubai said.
"Yes, if it weren't for our lack of resources this time, I really wouldn't want to use our last reserves," Zhang Yu sighed.
