Su Ruolan felt as if she were floating, with no solid ground beneath her. The changes in the sea of consciousness had generated immense energy; she had only absorbed a fraction of it while suppressing the rest. After defeating the Zombie, her mind relaxed, and that energy erupted violently, which was not good for her already exhausted body. Su Ruolan's body was essentially a vessel, and now that vessel was being stretched to its limits, showing signs of internal rupture.
During the battle with the White Zombie Leader, Reset sensed the extreme danger surrounding Su Ruolan and immediately awakened from her slumber. Currently, Su Ruolan was merely enduring the excess energy leaking out due to the expansion of space. Under normal circumstances, she would not be in danger; however, after several nights without proper rest and continuous grueling battles, even with a resolute mind, her physical condition could not keep up.
In the boundless darkness, Su Ruolan seemed to return to her past. She recalled her carefree days as a young girl and the loving guidance of her parents. "Clouds against rain, snow against wind, evening glow against clear skies. The returning swan against departing geese, roosting birds against chirping insects. A three-foot sword, a six-jun bow, north of the ridge against east of the river. The Clear Heat Palace on earth, the vast Cold Palace above. Morning mist over green willows on both banks, spring rain making apricot blossoms red in the garden." Her mother's gentle teachings from "Sound Rhythm Enlightenment" echoed in her ears. It seemed she could see him again—her parents believed he had great potential and often invited him to their home for discussions about current affairs. Although he was not handsome and appeared somewhat mature for his age, she found herself drawn to him; they shared similar interests and mutual affection. On their wedding night, dressed in military uniform, he took her hand and solemnly vowed: "The times are difficult and the future is uncertain, but since we are together, I will never betray you in this life."
"Runzhou, where are you? Do you know how much I miss you? Do you feel the same?"
"Rose, my daughter, where are you? Are you still alive? You must hold on; I will definitely find you!"
"Bao'er, don’t be afraid or cry. Mommy knows you’re in pain; I will hold you close and stay by your side!"
"Mom and Dad, I'm sorry. I cannot betray him just to survive. I know you are heartbroken; I am truly sorry. In this life, I will find you as soon as possible to repay your kindness in raising me."
"You want me to yield? Only if the sun and moon reverse and rivers flow backward." Once again, she dreamt of the torturous scenes from her past life before death.
"If it is so painful, why not fall into a deep sleep? If I sleep, I won't have to suffer anymore." First came warmth to soothe her; then sorrow slowly enveloped her; finally, a beautiful future tempted her to let go of resistance and find relief. The violent power of space manifested as inner demons that continuously tested Su Ruolan's mind and tempered her spirit.
"I must not yield; there is still so much to do! I must wake up!" Su Ruolan's consciousness finally broke through the chaos and returned to focus, gathering herself to channel energy.
Reset was very relieved that Su Ruolan had finally made it through. After this expansion, space had begun to form an independent world—mountains and rivers, sun and moon stars, flowers and insects—all teeming with life. This transformation required space itself to undergo purification by expelling wasted energy, which was precisely what that violent force represented.
Su Ruolan continuously drove the Spirit of the Wood forward, using her healing ability to purify and absorb that energy. Finally, her meridians were once again expanded; the green energy flow became richer and more robust while her muscle fibers grew tougher and stronger.
In her past life, even when following troops into battle, she served from behind. In this life, although she faced life-and-death struggles multiple times relying more on her abilities than physical prowess alone—her body was relatively weaker for solo combat. After experiencing the refinement from Spirit of the Wood and this physical enhancement process, Su Ruolan's body had become significantly stronger than before. This reduced the danger of being slaughtered whenever her abilities were exhausted.
As she opened her eyes, she found herself staring into a pair of phoenix-like eyes opposite hers—dark gray beneath them—on a face that was gaunt yet distinctly featured. A fine stubble emerged along his chin; he looked haggard and disheveled.
“Qin Zhi Han, what’s wrong?” Su Ruolan asked hesitantly.
Seeing the joy suddenly bloom in Qin Zhi Han's eyes was like a bright light that, though fleeting, pierced through Su Ruolan's heart, causing her to shiver and ponder as she lowered her gaze.
“You're awake. Jackson Wang made some porridge for you. Why don’t you have a little?” Qin Zhi Han sat by the bed, picked up the bowl from the bedside, held it in his hands for a moment, and then offered it to her.
Su Ruolan forced herself to sit up, took the bowl, and noticed the porridge was thick and warm, emitting an enticing aroma. “Thank you.”
“Take your time drinking it. If it’s not enough, there’s more,” Qin Zhi Han said gently.
“Hmm. By the way, how is it outside? Are you all okay?” Su Ruolan asked while sipping the porridge.
“We're all fine. Bai Zhen brought back information just in time. The battle at the city gate yielded over three thousand Zombie Crystals, and nearly four hundred soldiers have awakened their Abilities. All the Zombies in Zone Five of the city have been eradicated. The base is temporarily safe,” Qin Zhi Han replied.
“By the way, how did you leave Longhu Mountain? I heard that a giant wolf appeared during the battle. Was it the one we encountered? How did you get to H Base?” After a moment's hesitation, Qin Zhi Han asked.
“Yes, it was that wolf. By a twist of fate, it formed a contract with me and is now my companion. When I left the mountain, I saved Zhang Yu and hitched a ride with him to H Base. You’ve saved me multiple times; I wanted to check on you after seeing you so severely injured last time we parted,” Su Ruolan answered candidly.
“A Mutated Animal can actually form a contract with a human?!” Qin Zhi Han was somewhat shocked and then asked solemnly, “Who else have you told this information to?”
“No one else, just you,” Su Ruolan shook her head.
“Good. From now on, don’t tell anyone else; it could be dangerous,” Qin Zhi Han instructed as he watched Su Ruolan place the empty bowl on the table. “Make sure to rest well.” With that, he stood up and left.
Watching Qin Zhi Han's departing figure, Su Ruolan knew it was time for her to go.
Ninth Hospital Administrative Building Office.
"Was it a woman named Su Ruolan who saved those civilians during the recent incident in Zone Five involving zombies?" Colonel Jiang asked.
"Yes, according to eyewitnesses, a giant wolf appeared out of nowhere to help fight against the zombies, and it seemed to have a close bond with Su Ruolan. However, by the time we arrived, the giant wolf had already vanished, and we couldn't capture it," Jiang Yan reported.
"It's been several years since the apocalypse began, and this year has seen the most bizarre events," Colonel Jiang said, taking a deep breath of Zhonghua smoke. "Go and bring her to me. Remember, do it secretly and make sure she's alive."
At the temporary shelter in Zone Five, Colonel Zhu's subordinate addressed the team members who had awakened their abilities through absorbing Zombie Crystals. "You all performed excellently this time. The army is currently recruiting, so you should report to the troops. Those who join will receive a meal, and if you perform well, there will be additional rewards in supplies."
"Really? That's great! I'm signing up."
"I'm signing up too!" People embraced each other in celebration, joy evident on their faces.
In a corner, Cheng Xi silently observed the commotion without saying a word.
"Why aren't you signing up?" Kong Xiang asked.
"I'd rather not join such a unit," Cheng Xi replied bitterly, her gaze toward Kong Xiang intense. "I know you came with Sister Su. Now that I have nothing to hold me back, can you take me to find her?" Her family had perished during a zombie attack, and if it weren't for Su Ruolan leading everyone in resistance and self-defense, they would have never waited for the army's rescue. Even though the troops eventually arrived, she still felt abandoned.
"Are you sure?" Kong Xiang tilted her head to look at Cheng Xi. After seeing her nod firmly, she smiled and said, "Then we need to move quickly; otherwise, we might miss her."
