He seemed to be anxious and confused, as if he had taken my words seriously.
After a pause, he said, not in a low voice, "Do as you wish. If you can escape, it's your fate."
I couldn't help but laugh at the absurdity of it all. "Let's go find him together."
As we walked down the tomb's corridor, the surroundings remained eerily quiet, with only the sound of our shoes splashing in the puddles echoing in the stillness.
"Wait!" He stopped me and listened intently with his ear. "Did you hear that?"
I paused and focused on the sound as well.
There was a rhythmic "tap tap tap," slow and measured.
We exchanged glances, both mentally preparing ourselves for whatever creature might appear next.
Just as we were straining to locate the source of the sound, it suddenly stopped.
The unknown is the most terrifying; my heart raced like a drum, pounding relentlessly. We took our positions.
I stood back to back with him, fearing that something might suddenly disrupt our defenses.
After about half a minute of waiting, nothing happened. Nevertheless, we remained on high alert.
Suddenly, a sharp, piercing sound echoed from not far away!
I turned my head, and there was a massive face just two meters away from me. To be honest, I wasn't even sure it was a face because it was so large and looked so ferocious. Those places that seemed to be eyes were staring directly at me and the man beside me.
The man and I exchanged glances, and then he held the Fire Starter in one hand and the Cold Smoke Bomb in the other, readying himself for defense.
The monster remained still; we could only see its face, as everything else was too dark to make out.
Not wanting to confront the creature directly, we slowly began to back away.
"Ha," I exhaled deeply. Surprisingly, the monster seemed patient; as the man and I retreated slowly, it didn't chase after us!
The man next to me wore an expression that mirrored my own fear of escape.
I asked, "What do we do now? Where do we go?"
The man replied, "Shouldn't we head back to where we were? Our Oxygen Tanks are there."
"Yeah."
But as soon as we turned around, we saw the Big-Faced Monster again. Just imagine, even if a regular person suddenly appeared behind you, you'd be startled—let alone a twisted and ferocious creature!
The fear I felt at that moment was indescribable; my hands trembled so much that I couldn't even hold the lighter steady enough to press it.
Fortunately, the man beside me reacted quickly. He kicked out at the monster, catching it off guard. The creature's body was about the same size as a woman's, but its head was enormous, making it look bizarre.
The man's kick sent it reeling backward, and it let out a series of frantic cries while flailing its limbs. Seizing this opportunity, I quickly threw the Cold Smoke Bomb into its mouth.
The temperature of the Cold Smoke Bomb is not high at all; it’s merely a fuel used primarily for illumination. We were just going to test this unheard-of creature with the Cold Smoke Bomb.
We quickly ran back to the place where I had just woken up, not daring to look back even once.
“Hey, where did you guys go? I came back and didn’t see either of you! I’ve been waiting for a long time!”
Another man was actually waiting for us!
The man beside me was furious to see him there!
He snapped, “It’s all your fault!”
The other man looked confused and asked, “What did I do?”
Breathing heavily, the man beside me said, “Don’t ask now; we need to hurry.” After preparing everything with the Oxygen Tank, I followed them to find the entrance they had come through.
They swam towards a whirlpool, and I followed them down. After swimming for a while, I glanced back and saw the Big-Faced Monster right behind us! We still hadn’t escaped.
There was only one Cold Smoke Bomb left, but it was completely ineffective underwater!
I had no choice but to swim as hard as I could. The other two also spotted the creature and quickened their pace.
One man gestured for us to go ahead while he stayed back. Without thinking much, we swam on.
Unexpectedly, that man threw a Torpedo behind us, which was quickly swept along by the current and caught up with us.
But at that moment, I was already exhausted. My hands and feet felt completely numb; the strength I had used to rush forward was my limit. Unable to bear it any longer, I fainted.
When I woke up, I found myself in an elegantly decorated room filled with the soothing scent of incense. My head felt a bit dizzy, and my limbs were still weak and sore.
I had no idea how long I had been unconscious or what time it was.
“Creak—” The door opened.
A maid entered, carrying a cup of tea, and asked, “Miss, have you rested well? Are you hungry?”
I nodded casually but didn’t speak. I thought I already understood that this was the territory of the Cult of Spirits.
The maid simply placed the tea down and left. I took a sip and felt my mood lighten considerably. I couldn’t help but wonder how Mu Xuanche and the others were doing. Would they be worried about me since they couldn’t find me?
Before I could think too much, the maid returned shortly after, this time bringing some breakfast. I politely thanked her, and she didn’t say much in response before turning to leave.
After finishing my breakfast, I went to the door to see if I could push it open, but as expected, it wouldn’t budge. Still, I felt a bit disappointed.
The following time felt long and tedious. Trapped in this room with no way out, I could only see that maid every day. If I couldn’t sleep at night, I would count how many days I had spent in this wretched place.
Finally, one day after finishing breakfast and lying on the bed bored while staring at my fingers, someone appeared—someone I never dared to imagine would come.
Shangguan Mingyue.
I jumped up from the bed in excitement. “Mingyue! What are you doing here? Were you captured by the Cult of Spirits too? How are you? Are you hurt?” My concern for Mingyue’s well-being came out instinctively.
The bright moon looked at me without saying a word, simply gazing quietly, her eyes flowing with emotions I couldn't see in that boy.
I sensed something was off; the joy I felt when I first saw Shangguan Mingyue had faded, replaced by a growing unease in my heart.
It shouldn't be... it can't be. Mingyue is not that kind of person...
I forced a smile and beckoned Mingyue to sit down, but she remained still, tears suddenly welling up in her eyes.
Panic set in as I rushed to wipe her tears away, feeling frustrated. "Mingyue, what are you doing?"
Finally, Shangguan Mingyue spoke. She lowered her head slightly, unable to meet my gaze. "Yan Xi, you should have already guessed why I'm here. I... I'm really sorry."
I bit my lip, my eyes drooping. "Mingyue, I honestly don't know how to face you. Why did you do this? Your friends and even your sect will condemn you for it."
I grew more agitated, shaking Shangguan Mingyue's shoulders as I spoke.
She didn’t argue back; she just hung her head like a child who had done something wrong.
I stopped my reprimand.
"Mingyue, what you've done has hurt too many people."
That was my final statement.
Just as I thought Shangguan Mingyue would remain silent, Zhao An'an, who had been quietly listening to me, suddenly spoke up. "Yan Xi, even if I owe an apology to these commoners, I cannot betray him."
I listened to her words, yet I didn't know what to say. Who was he? Should I ask?
In the end, reason could not triumph over emotion. I asked, almost in despair, "Tell me, who can't you let down?"
Shangguan Mingyue simply smiled gently, her expression one of mad and chaotic love. That gaze was all too familiar to me.
At that moment, I was at a loss for words. What should I do? Should I make her leave the Cult of Spirits? Or should I remind her that she was already married? Bai Qiling was still waiting for her to return.
But what could I do? I could do nothing; this was Mingyue's own choice, and I had no right to interfere.
