The story had come to an end. Although her words were somewhat unclear, I still grasped something important.
I recalled the Corpse King that we had defeated and connected it to the tale she told. Though the logic was a bit convoluted, I boldly proposed a hypothesis and tentatively asked, "You are the daughter of the Gu Family, aren't you?"
She looked at me and burst into exaggerated laughter before replying, "I am, and yet I am not."
Confused, I asked, "Why not?"
She answered, "Because this form belongs to someone else. I've long forgotten what I truly look like."
She paused for a moment, then suddenly smiled wickedly. "You promised to help me after I finished my story. Now is the time for you to fulfill that promise."
My instincts kicked in, and I gripped my gun tightly. "Help with what?" I asked.
She squinted at me, tilting her head like an innocent girl, sweetly saying, "I want your skin. I think you are much prettier than I am now."
With that, she flashed a charming smile.
I had been wary of her actions, and upon hearing her words, I immediately raised my gun and fired at her. With my other hand, I used Qiling to throw four or five Exorcism Talismans at her.
Caught off guard, she was injured and let out a chilling laugh before disappearing from sight.
I gasped for breath, my eyes scanning the surroundings vigilantly, fearing she might suddenly reappear to ambush me.
"Yan Xi, Yan Xi, where are you?"
I heard Mu Xuanche's voice.
So I shouted back, "Mu Xuanche, I'm in the Chamber."
They ran over, and Mu Xuanche hugged me tightly. "Are you okay?"
I replied, "We came here together to the Chamber, and I just went to take a look at the Funerary Objects, and then you all disappeared."
At that moment, Bai Qiling interjected, "You suddenly vanished on the Passage. I realized it was an illusion, but my Illusion skills aren't as strong as the person who set it up. It took me some time to break through the illusion."
I understood and continued, "Did you sense a Vengeful Spirit in the north warning us not to go that way?"
Bai Qiling frowned. "I did sense a Vengeful Spirit in this tomb, but I couldn't pinpoint her exact location. She keeps changing her position."
It was then that I realized I had been trapped in an illusion since not long after we entered.
Seeing my thoughtful expression, Bai Qiling continued, "Three parts truth, seven parts falsehood; with reality and illusion intertwined, it's no wonder you couldn't tell."
Feeling frustrated, I simply replied with a "mm" and fell silent.
As we prepared to leave the Chamber and head towards the Main Chamber, a sharp female voice echoed, "When you exit the Chamber, take the left path at every fork. After four forks, turn right at the fifth one, and you'll enter the Main Chamber. I'll be waiting for you there."
I quickly reacted. "This must be her."
Then I looked up at Mu Xuanche and asked, "Mu Xuanche, should we trust her and follow her directions?"
Mu Xuanche nodded calmly. "Let's go with her instructions."
Knowing our destination made me feel much lighter as we walked. I put away the talisman in my backpack and secured my handgun. Following Mu Xuanche into the Main Chamber, the path was dark. I didn't hold onto Mu Xuanche but kept talking to him; he didn't say much in return, only responding with an occasional "mm."
Upon entering the Main Chamber, there was indeed a Night Pearl illuminating it like daylight. But where was Mu Xuanche?
They had disappeared again.
After encountering this situation twice in a row, I was truly at my breaking point. What had just happened—was it an illusion or reality, or had I unwittingly slipped into another illusion?
I was on the verge of collapsing.
At that moment, the empty Main Chamber echoed with the voice of that woman. "I've brought her here. Don't forget what you promised me."
What was going on? This didn't seem like she was talking to me.
I turned my head and saw a group of people dressed in white quickly approaching. After that, I lost all consciousness.
While I lost awareness here, Mu Xuanche and the others continued on. He could always sense my presence, so he wasn't overly worried; he simply followed the map's guidance in search of the Ghost Seal.
A burst of children's laughter rang out. Bai Qiling and Mu Xuanche exchanged glances and said in unison, "Sacrificial Child."
The term "Sacrificial Child" refers to children who are sacrificed for burial purposes, typically boys and girls around five or six years old. While they were still alive, mercury would be poured into their mouths and eyes until they died. Their internal organs would then be removed and filled with mercury to ensure their bodies wouldn't decay.
The resentment generated by these children after death is immense. If it weren't for tomb-raiding prevention, wealthy families would rarely seek out Sacrificial Children to guard their spirits after death; it’s considered a severe loss of virtue.
Sacrificial Children are indiscriminately killed, having died before forming their own thoughts, which leads to a strong resistance against any living person.
Bai Qiling frowned and muttered under her breath before asking Mu Xuanche, "What should we do now? Sacrificial Children are not easy to deal with."
Mu Xuanche also wore a serious expression. "We'll take it one step at a time. With the abilities of a Sacrificial Child, they shouldn't be able to kill us; they will only delay our search for Yan Xi."
The three of them continued walking when suddenly a cracking sound came from the wall. Mu Xuanche's expression changed. "Bloodworm, run!"
The big man and Bai Qiling also turned pale. The three quickly turned into a side passage.
Suddenly, a piercing scream echoed from the bottom of the tomb. Mu Xuanche frowned and turned to Bai Qiling. "Did you notice anyone around when you came down? That scream was definitely from a person."
"No, I didn't see anyone. There was clearly no one around when I came down," Bai Qiling replied.
Mu Xuanche didn't ask further. After all, whether others lived or died had nothing to do with him; he just wanted to find me as soon as possible.
After running for a while, Mu Xuanche realized that Bloodworm hadn't followed them; it must be busy draining the blood of those people.
This Bloodworm was not an easy creature to deal with. They could survive anywhere, living off carrion and blood, capable of destroying even the hardest walls. It seemed that the corpses left behind by the Corpse King were now prey for these Bloodworms.
Mu Xuanche stopped and took out a map to compare their current location.
He still remembered the side passage they had just run through. Although they hadn't followed the map exactly, they could return and try again; however, that area was currently occupied by Bloodworms, and it was impossible to confront them head-on.
Originally, Mu Xuanche, Bai Qiling, and the big man had no experience in tomb raiding; they had only dared to enter the tomb due to their exceptional abilities. However, there were hardly any simple tombs throughout history, and over time, countless terrifying monsters or ghosts had likely grown here.
"Whoosh."
The sound of someone's breathing grew closer. Mu Xuanche did not hurry away; since this person could escape from the army of Bloodworms, they must have some skills.
Perhaps this person could provide assistance in their next journey because he now realized that entering a tomb without experience would waste too much time and inevitably lead to unnecessary injuries and losses.
Bai Qiling and the Han were certainly aware that someone was approaching their location, but since Mu Xuanche showed no signs of concern, they felt reassured that nothing would go wrong.
Sure enough, a young man ran over. He was dressed in tight-fitting athletic wear and carried a medium-sized black backpack. Upon seeing the three of them, he did not panic. Instead, he stopped in front of them, breathing heavily. After a few seconds to catch his breath, he sized up Mu Yanchen and Bai Qiling before extending his hand toward Mu Yanchen. "Hello, my name is Yan Shengwei. I'm a Dirt Expert."
Mu Xuanche glanced at him but did not extend his hand. Yan Shengwei seemed unfazed by this and continued to smile as he held out his hand without withdrawing it.
After another look from Mu Xuanche, Yan Shengwei gestured with his eyes for him to shake hands, prompting Mu Xuanche to finally reach out.
Yan Shengwei's smile widened. "You don't look like Dirt Experts. What brings you to the tomb?"
Mu Xuanche shot him a glance and replied coldly, "Looking for something."
Yan Shengwei clicked his tongue knowingly. "It's obvious you're not here to rob a tomb; you don't have any tools. By the way, I forgot to ask your name."
