Twenty minutes, not too long yet not too short, was enough time for my anxiety to grow.
I watched the seconds tick by until it finally reached eleven twenty.
The few people gradually made their way ashore, each of them empty-handed.
I counted—three people.
Only three had come up, but what about the fourth?
Mu Xuanche noticed as well and asked them, "Did you not see the last person?"
I realized another issue: the missing individual had been one who previously showed a defiance towards authority!
Around eleven twenty-seven, a sudden splash of crimson water appeared near the riverbank.
I urged the three men to quickly retreat back to the vehicle. They noticed the unusual color of the water and hurried back.
I saw Mu Xuanche and Bai Qiling exchange a glance, their expressions grave.
Suddenly, a surging column of water erupted from the river. Mu Xuanche pulled me back urgently. Bai Qiling and the burly man also quickly stepped back.
Just as we halted, the water column crashed down, revealing a disfigured corpse thrown before us.
Looking at the tattered clothing left behind, it resembled that of the defiant man.
I also noticed he was clutching something golden in his hand, resembling gold.
Mu Xuanche muttered under his breath, "Idiot!"
I could see without needing an explanation that he had been caught by the Corpse King due to his greed. He had thrown something at us in provocation.
But how could there be gold in this water?
I was puzzled, but now was not the time to ask questions.
A foul stench hit me, and when I looked up, the Corpse King had already made it to shore.
We faced each other, neither side making a move. I noticed that the Corpse King's body wasn't too badly decayed; much of the flesh was intact, though some parts were swollen and darkened.
He was wearing clothes, albeit tattered, but they resembled the official robes of the Qin Dynasty. It seemed this Corpse King had been around for quite some time!
According to our prearranged plan, I intended to retreat to the edge of our formation to begin channeling spiritual energy. However, as soon as I moved, the Corpse King charged at me!
Although he was a corpse, at this level, he possessed his own thoughts and was much more agile than an ordinary Zombie.
At least his limbs could bend, which made it even more challenging for us to deal with him.
Yet even with his agility, there was still a distance between us. Before he could reach me, Mu Xuanche had already intercepted him and engaged in combat!
The burly man joined the fray with a short knife. Bai Qiling wasn’t a combat type; his true form was merely a ghost. So he quickly ran to the vehicle and retrieved Black Dog Blood, starting to sprinkle it around the edges of the battlefield.
Bai Qiling didn’t just sprinkle it on the ground; he also threw Glutinous Rice onto Mu Xuanche and the burly man who were entangled with the Corpse King. Of course, Mu Xuanche and the burly man wouldn’t be affected. Mu Xuanche had long since undergone Revival, while the burly man was originally human.
However, the Corpse King still felt uncomfortable, his movements noticeably slowed by the Black Dog Blood and Glutinous Rice.
His clothing had been damaged to varying degrees from the repeated stabs of the burly man’s dagger, yet his skin seemed to have very few wounds.
I watched as Mu Xuanche became increasingly anxious, occasionally getting attacked by the Corpse King. He desperately infused spiritual energy into the Flame Gathering Formation.
The Corpse King had initially felt triumphant after killing that defiant man, but now his actions were hindered by the Black Dog Blood and Glutinous Rice spread by Bai Qiling. He was furious!
In a sudden fit of rage, he disregarded Mu Xuanche's attacks and struck the burly man with a palm, sending him flying. The man lay on the ground, coughing up blood, and fainted just like that.
I glanced down at my wristwatch. It was already eleven fifty-two at night.
Time was running out, and my Flame Gathering Formation was nearing its final step of completion.
Seeing the burly man being knocked away, Mu Xuanche summoned his Devouring Blade.
The Devouring Blade was not an ordinary weapon. It was a magical artifact; in the hands of someone without spiritual energy, it was just a regular weapon. But in Mu Xuanche's hands, it became a deadly instrument.
Originally, the Devouring Blade's power had been sealed by his master, rendering it useless in my hands. However, Mu Xuanche's immense spiritual energy could unleash its full destructive potential.
With the appearance of the Devouring Blade, the Corpse King began to suffer frequent injuries.
The Corpse King gradually fell into a disadvantage. At this moment, midnight struck.
I urged all remaining spiritual energy to ignite the gathering flames; this time I had to assist Mu Xuanche, or else this Corpse King would be too difficult to handle.
Mu Xuanche noticed the eyes of the formation starting to glow red and, with a swift kick, sent the Corpse King flying into the center. The force of his action propelled him away from the Flame Gathering Formation.
At the moment Mu Xuanche exited, the Flame Power erupted, spreading red light across the riverbank. Everything within the formation became obscured; all that could be heard were a series of explosions and the roars of the Corpse King.
I stood beside Mu Xuanche while Bai Qiling examined the injuries of the big man.
I had been particularly worried about him, as he was the weakest among us. Fortunately, Bai Qiling had come along this time.
With this doctor providing immediate treatment, he was receiving timely care.
The gathering flames came swiftly and dissipated just as quickly, returning everything to its deep black state.
The Corpse King was thus vanquished, leaving behind only a mess of shredded flesh and torn fabric, a testament to how tough his body and clothing had been.
Bai Qiling helped the big man onto our vehicle and then approached us, saying, "The big man's injuries are serious; the areas struck have turned black. He’s likely been affected by Corpse Poison. However, it’s not too severe. I happen to have something to counteract it; we just need to wait for him to recover slowly."
Mu Xuanche nodded but walked toward where the Corpse King had been burned to death.
Although I didn’t know what he was looking for, I followed him anyway.
Mu Xuanche began searching through the pile of flesh and rags. Suddenly, it occurred to me—was he searching for a Seal?
I asked, "What’s wrong, Mu Xuanche? Is the Seal on this Corpse King?"
Mu Xuanche replied, "Maybe. I suspect that the tomb from the Qin State I deduced might belong to this Corpse King. I suspect the Seal is on him."
After searching for a while, Mu Xuanche found nothing and said to me, "Yan Xi, let's go. It's not on him; I must have guessed wrong."
I responded with a disappointed "oh," but I hesitated to leave empty-handed and glanced back at the pile of shredded flesh and torn cloth. Just as I was about to turn away, I noticed some words and lines.
So, I reached out to push aside the obstructing bits of meat and picked up a slightly bulging piece of cloth.
As I slowly opened the cloth, I realized it was actually a map.
"Mu Xuanche, look what I found!"
Mu Xuanche had already moved ahead but turned back upon hearing me call him.
He took the map from my hands and examined it. "This is a map of the area surrounding the tomb."
I smiled happily, eager to assist Mu Xuanche in his quest to find that elusive Seal.
We gathered the remains of the deceased person to take back with us.
It seemed he had found something, which is why he lingered underwater longer and was caught by the Corpse King. If he hadn’t been so greedy, he wouldn’t have met such a tragic end. This outcome was no one’s fault but his own.
We returned to the village chief's house late at night, only to find many villagers still awake, standing at the entrance.
The village chief stood at the front of the crowd and rushed over when he saw us arrive in the car. "I saw a huge red light coming from the riverbank. Did you manage to eliminate the Corpse King?"
Seeing the chief's anxious expression, I quickly replied, "Yes, Chief. The Corpse King has been defeated. No more innocent villagers will die because of him."
The other villagers also heard our words and were whispering excitedly among themselves.
The village chief wiped his tears and murmured, "My daughter, I have avenged you. Please rest in peace."
The three men also got off the truck to find their families.
Noticing that there were only three of them, the village chief asked me, "Weren't there four? Where's the other one?"
I replied, "He didn't listen to us. He delayed coming ashore for a bit of gold and was killed by the Corpse King. We brought his body back; it's in the back of the truck."
The village chief was taken aback and then sighed, "Well, it can't be blamed on anyone else; it was his own misfortune."
