Mu Xuanche was standing behind the wall, noticing my furrowed brows.
"What's wrong? You seem eager to find me," he said.
I rushed into his embrace and whispered, "I woke up and didn't see you. I thought you had abandoned me."
"I had something urgent to take care of," he replied.
He wasn't someone who would act thoughtlessly. If he had an issue, I knew it must be serious.
"Is it troublesome?" I asked him.
"Yes, it's a bit tricky. If you want to know more, come with me," he said before turning to walk ahead. I quickly followed him.
I noticed that he was sharing more with me now, unlike before when he kept everything hidden.
We entered through the stone wall, which was a deep green color and stood over two meters tall from the ground to the top. Inside, it was illuminated by electric lights, completely contrasting with the stone exterior.
However, thinking back to the mysterious computer room I had seen last time, I wasn't too surprised anymore.
After walking about a hundred and twenty steps and taking a left turn, we arrived at the place Mu Xuanche wanted to show me.
I saw an enormous alloy table gleaming with metallic luster, covered with several newspapers and some enlarged photographs. I turned to look at Mu Xuanche, who nodded for me to come closer.
I first glanced at the newspapers, where large bold headlines read: "S City Experiences Massive Landslide Disaster."
Flipping through a few articles, I found that they all conveyed similar information, but nothing seemed particularly valuable or insightful.
So I turned my attention to the photographs. At first glance, I felt a chill run down my spine—not because of the skeletal remains exposed by the landslide but because some of the artifacts revealed looked vaguely like relics from the Qin Dynasty. This landslide site resembled a tomb.
Suddenly, a thought struck me. "Mu Xuanche, could the map we got from Old Cao the Craftsman last time have some mysterious connection to this place?"
Mu Xuanche gently patted my head and said, "Wife, you've been doing well lately. You've grasped the core of the matter so quickly."
I smiled shyly, not saying anything, and looked at him, signaling him to continue.
Then Mu Xuanche picked up a photograph. "These photos were taken by my subordinates. They have carefully analyzed and compared the landslide disaster site with the address written on the gold leaf, and they have basically confirmed that this place is indeed the one mentioned on the gold leaf."
Mu Xuanche pointed at the photo and spoke confidently. When he was serious, he exuded a unique domineering aura that made one feel submissive with just a glance.
I thought for a moment but still felt something was off. Once Mu Xuanche finished his explanation, I asked, "I have something I can't figure out. According to the information revealed by these five pieces of gold leaf, it is crucial for both us and the Cult of Spirits. If we want to obtain this information, then the Cult of Spirits should be desperately guarding it. The process we went through to get it from Cao Jin wasn't particularly arduous either. I suspect there might be some deception involved."
Mu Xuanche smiled approvingly and said loudly, "That's right; there should indeed be some issues here. However, the problem is significant, and we cannot know for sure. So far, neither side has gained much advantage over the other; what we rely on is this covert competition. As you pointed out, acquiring these pieces of gold leaf has been unusually easy. We cannot rule out the possibility of deception in this matter, but we also shouldn't consider ourselves too clever; ultimately, being too clever can lead to our downfall."
I responded, "So what should we do now? Holding onto this gold leaf without being able to use it feels like a waste."
Who could be so despicable as to openly release the address on the gold leaf like this?
Mu Xuanche lightly curled his lips into a smile and said, "Who’s wasting anything? Since we can't figure this out clearly, why not go directly to investigate and uncover the truth?"
Mu Xuanche was a decisive person. He immediately ordered preparations for the investigation.
The weather had been exceptionally terrible lately, with thunderstorms and lightning. If we were to fly, there might be accidents, so Mu Xuanche decided to drive instead. He chose a well-performing Land Rover and took me on our way.
As we drove out of H City’s outskirts, night fell. By the time we got onto Expressway 071, it was already late—almost nine o'clock.
I sat in the passenger seat playing on my phone and listening to music. I wasn't really doing much but felt increasingly tired and wanted to sleep. My mind was foggy and heavy; I almost dropped my phone.
Noticing this, Mu Xuanche lowered his voice gently and said, "Yan Xi, if you're tired, just sleep. It's getting late now; we won't spend the night in the car. I'll get off the expressway soon so we can find a hotel in a nearby city to rest for the night."
I mumbled in agreement, put my phone away, and began to sleep.
For some reason, I couldn't fall asleep but felt mentally exhausted and bloated. The music playing in the car was Maxim's "Exodus," with its beautiful piano melodies flowing through the cabin.
I could clearly identify every melody and rhythm, and I even felt Mu Xuanche covering me with something to keep me warm as he parked the car.
But I couldn't move. No matter how hard I tried, I remained still.
I was a being of pure darkness, and having spent some time with Mu Xuanche and my master and senior sisters, my limited self-awareness told me that I had been ensnared by the Nightmare Demon.
Nightmares, being a type of soul entity, usually didn't amount to much. They merely confused people, leading to unfortunate outcomes. Most nighttime accidents were caused by being trapped in a nightmare.
Those with weak willpower would soon succumb to the nightmare, losing their self-awareness. Those with strong willpower might grit their teeth and endure it; ordinary nightmares wouldn't affect them.
I struggled to open my eyelids but found it futile.
Now that Mu Xuanche had parked the car, he must have realized something was wrong. I continued to fight against the nightmare, and finally, I felt my self-awareness growing stronger. I attempted to bang my head against the car window, hoping that external force would help restore my consciousness more quickly.
At this moment, I could barely manage to bite my tongue. My blood had the power to dispel evil entities, but if I were to break the skin while trapped in a nightmare, it would inevitably lead to shedding heart's blood, which could cause significant harm to my body.
I tried again and again until finally, my body lost its balance and crashed heavily against the hard glass. At that moment, I felt much better; my hand slowly searched for the fruit knife hidden in the compartment. My fingertips lightly grazed the blade, and blood began to seep out.
Suddenly, I woke up, opening my eyes with clarity flooding my mind.
As soon as I regained my self-awareness, I turned to look at the driver's seat—Mu Xuanche was gone without me noticing when he had left the car.
Panic surged within me; my heart raced chaotically. I wanted to find him; I needed to be by his side—I couldn't be a burden to him.
I threw off the tactical jacket covering me and opened the car door to step outside.
Once outside, I found myself unsure of where to go. The Expressway was eerily devoid of any passing vehicles; even late at night there were usually drivers on the road.
Now on this stretch of the Expressway, there was only a single Land Rover. The situation was undeniably strange; a faint green light emanated from the vehicle.
I inadvertently looked up at the sky but saw not a single star. The dark blue sky was filled with clouds.
The originally bright moon was obscured by dark clouds, and a faint mist gradually spread from within, enveloping everything around.
The unusual weather intensified my feelings of unease, and I began to feel inexplicably restless.
I withdrew my gaze from the empty space and stood by the car door, opening my phone to contact Mu Xuanche, only to find that there was no signal at all.
This was undoubtedly a nightmare. Initially, I thought it was just an ordinary one, but this time it seemed beyond my expectations. The level of this nightmare should be quite high; otherwise, Mu Xuanche wouldn't have chased after it personally.
Thinking of this, I forced myself to calm down. I couldn't become a burden to Mu Xuanche. Since he had known about the nightmare in advance, he must have been capable of handling it himself, which is why he let me sleep in the car. Given this situation, it should be safe for me to stay in the car.
At this moment, I really couldn't make any decisions on my own. Any wrong choice could lead to me leaving and not being able to return or, worse yet, facing death.
Impatience leads to chaos. I forced myself to settle down, and my thoughts became much clearer.
I reopened the car door and sat back inside, preparing to check the time on my phone. As I reached into my pocket, I realized it wasn't there. My heart sank with a thud.
