Children's perception of their parents is the strongest; that fusion of blood is a wondrous relationship that cannot be explained by normal concepts.
Because Chang'an had little contact with me, he was upset and deliberately ignored me.
He has been born for quite some time, yet I have hardly taken care of him, which makes me feel quite guilty.
Chang'an grows faster than other children his age, and he is also much smarter than them.
Typically, children start talking after they turn one, but he can already speak a few words at just a few months old and can think about simple things.
This might be related to Mu Xuanche's strong genes; I hope it will be a good thing for Chang'an.
Time passes particularly quickly. I felt like I had just glanced at Chang'an when Mu Xuanche told me it was time.
He prepared to turn off the screen, ready to take me, the one crying uncontrollably, and the big man kneeling in front of the screen with a dazed expression, out.
The big man and I were only short of howling in despair, begging him not to turn it off.
He held the remote control in his hand while instructing Chang'an, "Say goodnight to Mommy and Uncle Big Man."
"Goodnight, Mommy."
I smiled and waved at Chang'an. He then turned to the big man and said, "Goodnight, Uncle Big Man."
Mu Xuanche turned off the video device, and the big man rushed toward me like a madman, his face filled with excitement.
"Yan Xi, did you hear that? Just now, Chang'an called me Uncle Big Man! Really! Did you hear it?"
A burly man over six feet tall stood in front of me, wiping his tears as he spoke.
I felt he was being too dramatic. There was no room resembling the scenes of Chang'an, nothing worth remembering.
Ignoring the big man who was preparing to leave, he excitedly followed me, wanting something.
In the end, a single sentence from Mu Xuanche completely silenced him.
"Big guy, if you keep causing trouble, don’t expect to see it next time."
Wow, in an instant, the giant looked like he was about to cry.
He even mimicked the way people in Chang'an acted, pouting and hiding to the side, stealing glances at Mu Xuanche as if afraid he might really be angry.
I couldn’t help but laugh so hard that my stomach felt like it would burst.
It was just too funny; a giant like that was simply unbelievable.
Mu Xuanche and I returned to the wooden house. After being overly excited earlier, I now had no desire to sleep at all.
Mu Xuanche wanted to pull me into the room to sleep, but I dragged him out to the courtyard instead to lie down and gaze at the stars and moon.
In the courtyard, the big man had set up two rocking chairs. Mu Xuanche and I each lay on one side, and I reached out to hook my arm around his.
Perhaps it was because we were on an island that the stars seemed particularly bright. Leaning back in the rocking chair felt like something I could do for a lifetime.
A gentle breeze blew, intoxicating me with its softness.
I don’t know how long it had been; it was so comfortable that I eventually fell asleep in the rocking chair.
When I woke up, I was already in bed, and Mu Xuanche was not by my side. I had grown accustomed to seeing him when I opened my eyes, so his sudden absence made me a bit anxious.
I rolled over and got up, intending to find him without even putting on my shoes. However, just as I took a couple of steps, I saw him pushing the door open, carrying something fragrant in his hands.
Upon seeing me, he immediately frowned. Following his gaze, I looked down at my feet, which were bare against the floor.
He had always warned me not to directly touch the floor, saying it would make me catch a chill. I hadn’t paid much attention to his advice before, but now that I had been caught in the act, I felt a bit embarrassed.
I quickly hopped back onto the bed and sat there obediently, not daring to speak.
He walked over with a furrowed brow and an unhappy expression. "Just leave for a moment, and you can create this much trouble."
I silently retorted in my mind that simply stepping on the floor shouldn’t be considered trouble.
The aroma of what he was holding was too enticing, making it hard for me to resist reaching out for his bowl.
"Don't rush; it's hot," he said as he lowered his hands. That was when I realized he was holding a bowl of lean meat porridge, which looked incredibly appetizing after a night’s sleep.
I struggled to snatch the bowl from his hands, but he pressed my hand down and told me to sit quietly on the bed.
He reached out to cool the porridge before feeding me little by little.
I felt like I was in Chang'an, needing someone to feed me to survive.
After finishing a bowl of meat porridge, he became interested in my clothes.
He rummaged through my garments and picked out what he deemed suitable to hand to me.
His taste had always been good; I thought everything looked nice on me.
Once he had organized my outfit, he took me outside, where a burly man and Bai Qiling were already waiting at my door.
They had been standing there so early; I wondered what they were up to.
Mu Xuanche led me to Bai Qiling's place, where he presented a bowl of medicinal soup, claiming it would help me speak again.
He told me it was a remedy he had painstakingly sourced and concocted, insisting that I must drink it all.
I hesitated at the bitter taste and didn't want to drink it.
If I drank it and regained my voice, Mu Xuanche would no longer help the Liu family, and I couldn't bear to let Liu Daozhang down.
With a cold expression, Mu Xuanche shooed Bai Qiling and the burly man away, causing my heart to race with anxiety.
I felt scared; if I was discovered, it would be the end for me.
He stood before me with his arms crossed, and I dared not look up at him. Those who have a guilty conscience know that the eyes are the easiest to betray oneself.
"Gu Yanxi, look at me," he commanded.
At that moment, looking up would be foolish.
I couldn't do it, but he took matters into his own hands and lifted me up.
Forced to shrink my neck to meet his gaze, I found his eyes cold and piercing.
"Gu Yanxi, right?"
My current thought was to stubbornly deny it. At most, I would swallow this bitter pill and then think of another way out.
The room fell into a long silence, and the oppressive atmosphere terrified me.
That fear of the unknown was the most frightening of all.
"Gu Yanxi, no need to go to the Jinling Sect."
Fine, I admit that Mu Xuanche's threat had worked on me.
After hearing his words, I had no choice but to look up at him.
To prevent Mu Xuanche from discovering my medicine, I had kept it with me at all times.
He must have guessed by now; hiding it was pointless.
I reached into my pocket and pulled out the Pill, placing it in front of Mu Xuanche.
He took the Pill and walked out, closing the door behind him.
The room belonging to Bai Qiling felt somewhat enclosed, lacking even a single window.
Mu Xuanche must have known I would look for a way to escape, which is why he shut the door.
I sat anxiously in my seat, waiting for him to return.
It didn't take long before I heard the sound of the door being pushed open.
When he came back, the first thing he did was shove the Pill into my mouth.
Then he forced me to swallow it. As soon as the Pill went down, my stomach felt extremely hot.
A strange sensation washed over me; I felt an intense heat throughout my body. I grabbed the water on the table and drank desperately.
He placed his hand on my stomach, and a cool sensation flowed into me, gradually easing my discomfort.
Once the last remnants of that burning sensation faded away, he finally withdrew his hand.
"Try saying a few words," he instructed.
Under his command, I opened my mouth and attempted to speak.
I hesitated for a moment, still feeling a bit unaccustomed to speaking.
“Mu Xuanche…”
Calling out his name, my voice sounded somewhat hoarse, probably because I hadn’t spoken in so long.
He brought over a cup of warm water and insisted that I drink it.
I took the water but didn’t dare to look at him, fearing he might question me.
He leaned down, sitting in front of me, and with his long fingers, he lifted my chin, forcing me to meet his gaze.
“You’re worried that I won’t help Liu Qingfeng, so you’re trying to deceive me on his behalf.”
I was indeed concerned that he wouldn’t assist Liu Qingfeng, but I hadn’t conspired with Liu Qingfeng to trick him. I also didn’t know that Liu Qingfeng would give me the medicine and then provide the antidote.
I nodded at him, then shook my head.
“Gu Yanxi, you can speak now. Answer me.”
It was only after he reminded me that I realized how unaccustomed I had become to talking.
“I didn’t deceive you. I only found out later that Liu Qingfeng had given me the antidote, but I…”
I couldn’t bring myself to finish the sentence, and he spoke for me.
“You’re afraid that I won’t help, right?”
I nodded silently, feeling a heavy pat on my head.
"It hurts, be gentler."
"You know pain? Seems like you're not as foolish as I thought. You just know how to conspire with outsiders to deceive me. Who exactly is your husband?"
His words struck a chord within me, filling me with guilt.
I threw myself into his arms and pouted, "I won't dare next time."
A sigh escaped him from above. "Dare to have a next time? Do you still want to get out of bed?"
"I won't dare, absolutely not. I promise it won't happen again."
After several assurances, he finally decided to let me off the hook.
