As the clock approached eight in the evening, the three of us wandered up and down the floors, eventually returning to the first floor where we encountered each other.
"Did you find anything?" I asked as Mingyue walked towards me.
She looked exasperated. "Those people seem frozen in place. No matter how much I call out, they ignore me."
He Zhi Yong nodded in agreement, indicating that his findings were similar.
All three of us were experiencing the same situation. What was going on with these people? It felt as if time had stopped for them; they simply wouldn’t move.
Suddenly, the clock on the wall chimed, signaling that it was exactly eight o'clock.
The clear sound of the chime startled us. None of us expected to hear such a sound in this tense atmosphere.
With a "thud," the lights above us flickered and went out, leaving only a few sparks of light behind.
"Quickly, let’s hold hands and make sure we don’t get separated," I urged, worried about the dangers of losing each other in this uncertain situation. It was better to stick together.
A hand reached out from my right side. Remembering that He Zhi Yong was standing there earlier, I extended my hand to grasp his.
"Uncle He, why are your hands so cold?"
As soon as I spoke, I realized something was off.
When I turned around, a face glowing with a green light was staring at me from the darkness.
The light illuminated his face, revealing countless tiny green spots that covered it entirely.
It was a sight that sent chills down my spine; anyone with a fear of clusters would likely faint at the sight.
I shook off his hand, and he stood there, frozen in place.
I recognized this man; he was the one who had failed to answer my questions earlier—the Mouse Man.
"Ugh!"
A sudden, strange sound shattered the atmosphere.
The green-faced figures seemed to come back to life, their previously expressionless faces transforming into those of Menacing Brutes.
They stretched out their hands and charged toward me.
These people resembled Zombies, their mouths agape, revealing sharp fangs within.
In an instant, I felt the green spots on their faces sprouting long hairs, making them look just like monkeys.
The closest one, Mouse Man, lunged at me immediately, baring his fangs and twisting his head as if he intended to bite me.
I reached out and pressed against his head, attempting to strike a pressure point.
He paused for just a moment before continuing his charge.
I grabbed something nearby and hurled it at him.
He didn’t even try to dodge; he came straight at me.
I struggled to evade Mouse Man in front of me, forgetting the danger behind me.
Suddenly, a green arm appeared from behind, reaching out to grab my neck.
Seeing that he was about to snap my neck in the next moment, I drew my gun from my waist and fired at his arm.
Uncertain whether he was human or ghost, I hesitated to take his life.
The man I shot in the arm was now covered in green spots that seemed to move on their own.
I turned on my flashlight to get a better look and discovered that those green things were actually swarms of tiny bugs, each no bigger than a sesame seed.
The bugs rushed towards me, and I knew without looking that being invaded by these creatures would lead to nothing good. I might end up like those people, turned into a Puppet.
Terrified, I dashed upstairs, determined to avoid these bugs at all costs. Just as I reached the top of the stairs, a figure came rushing down.
Both of us were too frantic to notice each other, and we collided.
The force of the impact knocked me aside.
"Who the hell bumped into me?" I heard Mingyue's voice curse.
Realizing it was her, I quickly asked, "Mingyue, are you okay?"
"Yan Xi, what are you doing up here? Aren't you supposed to be downstairs?"
"Supposed to be? The downstairs is crawling with those creepy green bugs! I came up here to escape!"
Her face was filled with despair as she lamented, "I wanted to go down to find you. I just hurt someone, and now the upstairs is filled with those green bugs too. They can jump! It's so disgusting. We need to get out of here!"
It seems that Mingyue's situation is similar to mine. I have no idea how He Zhi Yong is doing over there; he is in the backyard where there are fewer people.
"Ah!"
An astonishing scream made both of us pause.
"It's He Zhi Yong!"
We shouted in unison and then rushed downstairs.
When we reached the backyard, we saw He Zhi Yong lying on the ground, his face covered in blood. The originally glowing green eye was gone, and he looked in immense pain.
"Uncle He! Uncle He..."
I called out anxiously, hoping he would wake up.
It wasn't until I heard his labored breathing that I felt reassured enough to continue asking, "Uncle He, what happened? How did this happen to you? What attacked you?"
He seemed seriously injured and struggled to speak. "I don't know, but I can sense it was probably an animal. It used its sharp claws to scratch me."
"Oh no..."
That sound again. I quickly turned around to look, but saw nothing.
He Zhi Yong's voice echoed, "That's the sound of that creature; it's coming for you."
Before he could finish, I felt a fierce wind rushing toward me. Instinctively, I drew my gun and aimed at the shadow.
To my surprise, the creature was incredibly fast. It lunged at me before I could even see its form clearly, and pain shot through my hand as my gun fell from my grip.
It seemed ready to pounce on me, but thankfully, Mingyue reacted quickly. She fired a shot, temporarily suppressing the creature.
I looked down at my hand, now drenched in blood; the wound was deep enough that I could see bone.
Mingyue asked, "Yan Xi, are you okay?"
I took off my jacket and wrapped it tightly around the wound, giving her a reassuring look. "I'm fine."
Just as I was about to pick up my phone from the ground, it rang. The only person I had saved under 'A' was Mu Xuanche. I lowered the volume and answered the call.
"Hello, what’s going on?"
A caring voice came through the phone, "How's your hand?"
"I'm fine. Is there something you need?"
He didn't dare show himself, hiding in the shadows while calling me. There were things here that he was wary of, forcing him to remain concealed. I cooperated, trying not to reveal any information.
"Listen to me, Yan Xi. I can't come out to help you right now; you have to rely on yourself. If I reveal myself, your parents will be in danger. If you understand, nod your head."
A warmth spread through my heart. Just a moment ago, I was speculating about why he wasn't showing up, and it turned out it was for my parents' sake. He always followed through on his promises. He wanted me to stay safe and not seek out my parents, so I would wait safely. Gratefully, I nodded.
His voice came through the receiver again, "The one attacking you is a monkey. To deal with it, you must go to Director Chen's office on the third floor and find its corpse. Destroying it is the only way to break this formation. Do you understand?"
I nodded again. He left me with a single word: "Heart," before hanging up.
Putting away my phone, I turned to Ming Yue seriously and said, "If we want to survive tonight, we have to go to the third floor and find the monkey's corpse."
"Alright, let's go together."
We helped He Zhi Yong stand up, temporarily bandaging his head.
Leaving him alone downstairs would mean certain death; we couldn't just watch him get hurt.
Fortunately, although He Zhi Yong was older, he was still quite sturdy.
"Both of you don't need to support me, I can walk by myself. Just help me block a bit," he said.
Men often bleed without shedding tears; he didn't want us to see his vulnerable side.
To reach the third floor, we had to pass through the first and second floors.
The two large halls on the first and second floors were filled with Green Monsters and green bugs. It was nearly impossible to get through unless one grew wings.
Thinking about how He Zhi Yong was an old hand at this, I went to seek his advice. "Uncle He, do you know what those fluorescent green bugs are?"
"My eyesight isn't good right now, so I can't see what's on the ground. If you can catch one, I can take a look," he replied.
"Alright," I said.
