I had no recollection of how I returned to the cabin. All I knew was that I was sitting across from two people: a burly man and He Zhi Yong.
"Yan Xi, what did that ridiculous cult leader say to you?" the burly man asked.
"Girl, you’ve entered into a Ghost Marriage," He Zhi Yong chimed in.
Both of them spoke almost simultaneously, and as I hesitated over whom to answer first, they began to argue.
The burly man glared at He Zhi Yong, ready to throw a punch, while He Zhi Yong stood his ground, slapping the table. "What do you want?"
It looked like they were about to get up and fight, so I had to intervene. "Alright, enough with the fuss."
They exchanged glances before turning away from each other, clearly not on good terms.
While the burly man was just being troublesome, I could extract quite a bit from He Zhi Yong. I found an excuse to send the burly man away, leaving me alone with He Zhi Yong.
He remained calm, leisurely sipping his tea as he waited for me to speak.
"Uncle He, let’s get straight to the point. How do you know Mu Xuanche?" I asked.
"Girl, first tell Uncle how you ended up in a Ghost Marriage," he replied.
This old fox wanted information but was willing to pay a price for it. Reluctantly, I began to recount the events surrounding my Ghost Marriage.
After listening, he excitedly patted his thigh. "Master, you actually deceived your disciple! How ruthless of you!"
I was completely confused by him. "Uncle He, what do you mean by that?"
"You’re lucky, girl, to have such a wonderful grandfather."
Old Fox's words were so cryptic that I was left in a fog, not understanding at all.
Feeling frustrated from the guessing game, I couldn't help but say, "Uncle He, stop beating around the bush and just tell me directly what’s going on."
He looked at me and asked in return, "Do you remember when I told you that your grandfather once robbed a tomb and came back with a changed temperament?"
I nodded. "I remember."
Seeing my reaction, he continued.
"After that tomb robbery, only four people returned: Golden Cicada and two of his most capable disciples, Liu Qingfeng and Lingyunzi, along with your grandfather. Out of a team of dozens from Vast and Mighty, only these four made it back. That shows how dire the situation was. However, I once heard from the masters in the field that they brought back a corpse from inside. Later, there were rumors that this corpse was the physical body of Mu Xuanche."
I had some knowledge about this; when we were at Zhao Family Village, we found Mu Xuanche's body. My master had also mentioned Mu Xuanche's situation.
They had worked together to hide Mu Xuanche's body beneath the well at Master Zhao's house, but I wasn't clear on the details of the tomb robbery itself.
"Uncle He, do you know where my grandfather and the others found Mu Xuanche's body?"
He shook his head like a bobblehead, indicating he didn't know.
I didn't believe for a second that Old Fox would be unaware; he was clearly trying to deceive me.
I shot him a glance and rested my eyes on him. "Then what did you mean when you said my grandfather deceived you? What did he trick you about?"
"Hmph, that Old Man Gu Rong..."
Before he could finish his sentence, I shot him a glare. "What kind of talk is that?"
Realizing his words were inappropriate, he quickly corrected himself. "I meant my master. He really is something. If he wanted you to marry that Mu Xuanche, he should have just said so directly. Instead, he went through all this trouble and even tricked me into digging up that so-called Princess Tomb for treasure. It turns out it was all for you, girl."
"Oh come on, Uncle He, stop beating around the bush and just say it," I urged.
After my relentless questioning, he finally revealed everything he knew.
Then, like a man escaping, he hurriedly left the wooden cabin, leaving me alone.
It was true; back then, my grandfather and a few others had indeed raided Mu Xuanche's tomb.
So many had died that after the four of them emerged, they prepared to go their separate ways.
Not long after, strange things began to happen.
Those who had died did not rest in peace within the Tomb; their families suffered greatly.
This included Liu Qingfeng's wife and Golden Cicada's child. The four of them started to feel fear.
After discussing it, they returned to Mu Xuanche's tomb to steal his corpse as leverage.
Mu Xuanche's spirit came knocking at their door. Lingyunzi hid back in Xuanzong and inherited the position of sect leader.
Liu Qingfeng and Golden Cicada went to find my grandfather. To prevent himself from being persecuted by Mu Xuanche after death, Golden Cicada decided to bury himself in Jin Ping's Tomb.
Relying solely on Liu Qingfeng's strength wasn't enough; they needed my grandfather's help as well.
So the Golden Cicada revealed a secret to my grandfather in exchange for something. This secret was known only to my grandfather, who, in pursuit of it, summoned his most prized disciple, He Zhi Yong. Together, the three of them raided Jin Ping's tomb.
Initially, they intended to destroy Jin Ping's coffin, but my grandfather felt it was too cruel and feared it would bring disaster upon future generations. Instead, he brought Jin Ping's coffin back home for burial.
On one hand, this was meant to threaten Jin Ping; on the other hand, it served to guard his spirit.
Mu Xuanche's deal with my grandfather involved ending Jin Ping's engagement while marrying me. In return, my grandfather gave him two pieces of Gold Foil Silk.
Everything became clear; all of it made sense now.
It seemed that there was no love between Mu Xuanche and me—only hatred. The one he despised the most must be my grandfather, after all. It was my grandfather who had robbed his tomb, leaving him restless even in death.
As I pondered these thoughts deeply, the door suddenly swung open.
It was the big man.
"Yan Xi, what are you doing? The master is looking for you."
The Island Master wanted to see me.
What could he want? Though puzzled, I followed the big man outside.
To my surprise, he led me to the battlefield at the back. I rarely came here because it was too remote. The big man deemed this place too dangerous for me.
Why would the Island Master want me here today? From a distance, I spotted a figure dressed in black standing with his back to me.
The big man pulled me closer until he turned around.
In the sunlight, his exquisitely chiseled face appeared even more striking and coldly charming under the golden rays. A lazy aura emanated from him.
"Master, I have brought Sister Gu,"
"Mm,"
He hummed lightly, not even glancing my way. His arrogant demeanor made me want to rush over and slap him.
He exuded a familiar coldness, yet his face was entirely different.
Standing in the sun for a while, I felt like I was about to faint. The Island Master still showed no intention of speaking.
I finally couldn't hold back any longer. "Island Master, may I ask why you summoned me today?"
At last, he gave me a proper look. "Aren't you seeking revenge? The Island Master is feeling merciful today and will help you out."
"Do you see those over there?"
I followed his gaze and saw a line of animals tied up about a hundred meters away, arranged from large to small.
There were all sorts of animals; the largest looked like a wild boar, which should be the Elder.
"Island Master, what do you intend to do with them?"
He shoved a gun into my hands and then walked over to the shade of an umbrella, lounging on a beach chair while a burly man attended to him, looking utterly relaxed.
I turned around, holding the gun in disbelief as I stared at him. "Are you saying I should kill all those animals?"
He curled his thin lips into a strange smile and beckoned me over with a finger.
With no other choice, I could only comply with his orders and move closer.
But he was still not satisfied and asked me to bend down closer.
I leaned in next to his head, and he lowered his voice, speaking in a deep tone, "If you can't even bring yourself to harm these animals, how can you seek revenge?"
Looking down at the gun in my hand, I pondered. A phrase kept flashing through my mind: I am the fish, and others are the cleavers, at their mercy.
I recalled a scene from the Qin General's Tomb, where poisonous centipedes surged towards me, and thought of Jin Ping's triumphant smile.
I walked over, gun in hand, and aimed at the largest boar, pulling the trigger.
Due to its size and the close range, it wasn't difficult; I hit the wild boar with one shot.
With a "bang," blood splattered, and I fell to the ground.
The recoil from the gun made my hand numb.
In a fit of anger, I had fired the gun; now that the adrenaline had faded, I felt weak again.
