I slowly lifted my head, one hand pressed against my aching, burning right cheek, feeling the intense warmth above me.
I looked up at Mu Xuanche, uncertainly asking, "You actually hit me?"
His gaze did not waver; he stared directly at me, his thin lips showing no sign of movement.
"You don't care, do you?" I fixed my eyes on his face, questioning him softly.
"Yan Xi..."
It was Mingyue calling me from the side; I heard her voice.
Women often like to deceive themselves, their words light and carefree. But when this moment arrived, I couldn't help but feel wronged. If Mu Xuanche were to apologize to me now, I would forgive him. After all, it was just a quarrel between a couple; living together inevitably leads to such conflicts.
But he didn't. He looked at me with a glint of ruthlessness in his eyes that I had never seen before. That unfamiliar look frightened me. What was wrong with him? Why was he treating me like this?
I tugged at his sleeve and asked, "Have you lost your mind? Tell me, have you?"
His response was to forcefully pry my hand away and glare at me as he said each word slowly and deliberately: "Get lost."
Get lost.
He actually told me to get lost.
A chill washed over me, as if I had been thrown into a bath filled with ice cubes, trembling from the cold.
Mingyue rushed over to me. She had warmth, but I still felt cold—a chill that seeped deep into my bones.
"Yan Xi, let's go. Why should we suffer here?"
My feet felt as heavy as if they were bound with lead weights, being dragged outside step by step by Mingyue.
Using the same method she had employed to enter, Mingyue led me out of the tomb chamber.
As we reached the stone door, Bai Qiling saw us emerge and rushed over.
"What happened?" he asked with concern.
His outstretched hand was swatted away by Shangguan Mingyue, who unleashed all her frustration from inside onto him.
"Get lost, you scoundrel! Not a single man is worth anything. Just go away!"
Bai Qiling was taken aback by the sudden outburst and retaliated, "What’s wrong with you?"
"Yan Xi, let’s go. Don’t pay attention to these filthy men," Mingyue said as she pushed Bai Qiling aside and pulled me toward the exit.
After taking a few steps, I held onto Mingyue's hand and gestured for her to stop.
I released her hand and turned back to face Bai Qiling.
Standing in front of him, I halted and stared intently.
"Gu Yanxi, if you have something to say, don’t look at me like that. It’s quite frightening."
After a moment of silence, I finally spoke, "Bai Qiling, can I ask you one question?"
The moment I opened my mouth, tears began to fall uncontrollably down my cheeks.
Perhaps he had never seen me like this before. Bai Qiling was momentarily stunned, a hint of panic crossing his face.
"My boss, just ask whatever you want. Please don't cry; I would never toy with your feelings," he said.
Under normal circumstances, I would have teased him a bit, but right now, I felt utterly devoid of any emotion.
I forced a smile and looked at him.
He raised both hands in a gesture of surrender. "Alright, it's my fault, boss. Please stop smiling; it looks worse than crying. Just ask me directly."
"Is the heart's blood of the child in my womb able to heal Mu Xuanche's wounds? Can it bring him back to life?"
"How do you know?"
Bai Qiling's immediate response made my head spin as if I had been thrown into water, buzzing with disbelief.
So it was true. How could he be so cruel?
That was also his child. No wonder Master and the senior brother had firmly opposed my pregnancy; it was all for this reason.
No, I absolutely could not let this child suffer such a fate.
Ignoring Bai Qiling's cries behind me, I grabbed Shangguan Mingyue and kept running forward.
"Mingyue, hurry up! We need to get out of here; it's too terrifying!"
To avoid being discovered by Wang Kun at the entrance, we deliberately cut through the woods to leave this place.
We hardly stopped along the way.
I ran to the city with Mingyue, carrying simple packages, and after boarding the bus, we finally felt a sense of liberation.
"Yan Xi, what are you planning to do? How about we go back to the Xuan Sect together?"
"The Xuan Sect... Remember how Mu Xuanche intruded into my room several times without being discovered? If I really go back to the Xuan Sect, it won't solve anything."
Shangguan Mingyue scratched her head in frustration. "Then what should we do? If we don't go back to the Xuan Sect, we can't just wander around. You're pregnant now; it's too dangerous if you don't return."
In my moment of despair, I thought of a place where I probably wouldn't be found.
"Mingyue, you go back to the Xuan Sect. I'll stay at a relative's house in the countryside for a while."
As soon as Mingyue heard this, she immediately refused. "No way! I have to go with you."
"Mingye, please let me go alone. If I'm by myself, I won't think of him," I said, and tears began to fall uncontrollably.
They dripped onto my clothes, leaving dark marks behind.
She sniffled, her eyes turning red. "Fine, I won't bother you, but you must take care of yourself. Call me if anything happens; I'll rush over to find you."
After bidding farewell to Mingyue, I took a flight directly from S Province to H City.
Relying on my memory, I successfully boarded a bus that took me to the dock.
"Excuse me, does this boat go to Qilin Island?"
I looked for a boat by the roadside and planned to ask about the price.
The master was a middle-aged man in his forties, of medium height, with a long face and a pointed chin, his hair a messy tangle. He scratched his head and looked up at me.
"Miss, you’re looking for Qilin Island?"
"Yes, Master. How much does it cost to get there?"
He gave me a disdainful glance. "Miss, have you been playing too many games? What Qilin Island? I've lived here for over forty years and have never heard that name. You should head back soon; your family might be worried."
No Qilin Island? That couldn't be possible.
If there were no Qilin Island, how could the Island Master and the big man live up there? Perhaps the island is known by another name to outsiders, which is why these people don't know it.
If there really was no way, I would have to rent a boat myself and navigate based on my memories.
While I was searching for a boat, I unexpectedly spotted a familiar figure.
I lowered the brim of my hat and walked toward him. As I brushed past, I intentionally bumped into him with my shoulder.
Without stopping, I continued walking forward.
When I reached the corner, I turned around, and he was already standing there with his hand outstretched.
Seeing me seemed to surprise him as well; he furrowed his brow and lowered his voice. "What are you doing here?"
"Chuchen, please help me," I said, choking back tears as I looked at him, fighting the urge to let them fall.
"What do you need help with? Do you realize this is the territory of the Cult of Spirits? Coming here is like a sheep entering a tiger's den. Where's Mu Xuanche? Why isn't he with you?"
Upon hearing those three words, the tears I had been holding back finally broke free, spilling down my cheeks in a rush.
Chuchen looked flustered. "Don't cry. What happened? Just tell me."
Even if we weren't together, I didn't want anyone to speak ill of him. It was only because I had truly loved him that I felt this way.
"Chuchen, please don't ask. I'm begging you to take me to Qilin Island."
He glanced at me with a troubled expression. "Qilin Island and Cult of Spirits have always kept to themselves. Ever since the last incident, the Island Master has strengthened the defenses, making it difficult to get onto the island."
Thinking of the child in my womb, I couldn't help but act selfishly. I bent down as if to kneel before Chuchen.
"Gu Yanxi, what are you doing? I've already refused you. If you want to go, then even if it costs me my life, I'll take you to the island."
I could see the seriousness in his eyes, but it was a feeling I couldn't reciprocate.
Someone had already taken residence in my heart, and it was destined to hold him back.
"Thank you."
Those two words were all I could offer. Anything more would only hurt him.
"Wait here. I'll find you some suitable clothes."
After giving his instructions, he turned to leave but stopped after just a couple of steps. He turned back to look at me, his eyes sparkling like pure glass.
"Gu Yanxi, never say thank you to me."
As he turned away once more, tears fell from my eyes.
Had I hurt another person again? When did he start to like me? My heart was completely occupied by Mu Xuanche, and I had no inkling of his feelings.
Yet, time and again, he risked his life to save me, secretly letting me go.
Images flashed through my mind—his gaze when he kissed me in the dungeon. At that moment, I was solely focused on escaping and felt nothing but disdain for him. I failed to notice that those brown eyes held a hint of deep affection.
If I had realized it sooner, I could have kept my distance from him and severed that impossible thread of feelings.
