The atmosphere in the room suddenly grew cold, heavy with tension.
"Yan Xi, stop throwing a tantrum and let me see," he said, his voice carrying an air of authority, as if I were the unreasonable child.
I turned to look at him, my eyes filled with confusion, desperately holding back tears.
"You’re the one throwing a fit while my life is hanging by a thread," I retorted.
"Isn't Jin Ping the one you stabbed twice?"
He was observant enough to notice that, even while I was injured; he could still pay attention to others. It was quite impressive, but it only deepened my disappointment in him.
"Mu Xuanche, get out!"
I pointed at the door, enunciating each word clearly as I spoke.
He was already an impatient person, and after being dismissed twice, he left with a cold expression.
I lay on the bed, the pain in my back no longer mattered because my heart hurt even more.
My parents were missing, and my husband treated me this way.
In an instant, I felt like I had lost two major supports in my life, not to mention that wretch Jin Ping constantly targeting me.
Not long after Mu Xuanche left, Shangguan Mingyue came upstairs.
"Yan Xi, come on, take off your clothes so I can apply some medicine," she said.
I didn’t move, and she simply took matters into her own hands, gently lifting my shirt.
"Dammit, once I go down there, I'm going to give that bitch a good beating. My back is all bruised; this damn ghost girl hits hard. Just wait and see how I teach her a lesson later."
Shangguan Mingyue cursed as she applied ointment to my back. After a while, her energy seemed to wane, and she continued, "Yan Xi, did you have a fight with Mu Xuanche?"
"Although I think he went a bit overboard this time, I believe he's still on your side. Didn't you see how fiercely he dealt with Jin Ping just now?"
I was feeling restless and couldn't stand Mingyue's incessant chatter. Even though she meant well, I wasn't in the mood for it.
"Mingyue, can we not talk about this? I'm feeling a bit annoyed right now."
"Okay, okay, I won't bring it up anymore."
I turned away from her; there was still a wound on my shoulder that needed ointment.
This medicine must have been brought by Mu Xuanche; otherwise, with Mingyue's clumsiness, she wouldn't have thought of it.
Only Mu Xuanche could instruct Bai Qiling to fetch the medicine and have Mingyue deliver it.
Seeing the frustrated look on Mingyue's face made me realize she was probably holding back some thoughts but didn't dare to speak up for fear of annoying me. Just seeing her like that eased my mood a little.
"Mingyue, if you have something on your mind, just say it. Don't hold it in."
She glanced at me and shook her head.
"No way. You're already annoyed; I can't."
I rolled my eyes at her. "You can hold it in if you want."
She continued to shake her head, looking pitiful.
When I first met Shangguan Mingyue, I thought she was incredibly capable and sharp. But after spending more time with her, I realized she was just a big silly girl—smart with outsiders but completely defenseless around those close to her.
"You know, I'm already so annoyed, one more person doesn't make a difference," she said.
She nodded and continued, "Yan Xi, ever since Jin Ping showed up, everyone has been acting strange. You know, last night I saw Bai Qiling and Jin Ping in the backyard together. I could tell Bai Qiling was angry at Jin Ping, but isn't he supposed to not know her? Why would he suddenly get mad at her? Isn't that weird?"
Sensing something off, I quickly asked Shangguan Mingyue, "Have you asked Bai Qiling about it?"
"No, I felt something was wrong but didn't dare to ask, so I could only talk to you."
Bai Qiling knows Jin Ping too and is deliberately hiding that fact, pretending they aren't familiar with each other. This is quite interesting.
Actually, Mingyue was a bit mistaken; things didn't start feeling off when Jin Ping appeared, but rather when Bai Qiling showed up.
Since Bai Qiling's arrival, Mu Xuanche hasn't left my side, yet strange incidents keep happening and are becoming increasingly dangerous.
What exactly is going on here?
At first, Mu Xuanche knew Mingyue's identity and that she intended to harm me. Given Mu Xuanche's personality, he would have eliminated Mingyue immediately. But he didn't; instead, he told me to keep it a secret. Could it be that he knew from the start that Mingyue was Bai Qiling's fiancée and chose not to act against her?
It seems like I've found a lead in this mystery, but new questions keep arising.
I took Mingyue's hand and stared at her intently.
"I have something important to tell you. You absolutely must keep this secret," I said.
She frowned at me. "Yan Xi, don't say it like that; it scares me."
"Mingyue, this is really important. I'm begging you," I urged.
After hesitating for a moment, she finally nodded in agreement.
I told her about the pregnancy, and her face was filled with shock as she reached out, trembling, to touch my belly.
"You mean, there’s a child inside you that belongs to you and Mu Xuanche?"
I nodded.
"Yan Xi, give me a moment. I need to gather myself before I can look at you directly."
She took a few deep breaths before turning to speak with me again.
"Do you know? The Senior Brother once assigned me a task to slip Contraceptive Pills into your meals. He absolutely couldn't let you get pregnant."
I was taken aback for a moment, then quickly reacted, glaring at her. "When did this happen?"
"It was when we were descending the mountain. But after I looked it up online, I found out that those pills are really bad for a woman's body, so I didn't use them."
Could it be that the Master instructed the Senior Brother? That giving birth would mean my death?
"Bright Moon, I'm telling you this because I need your help. Jin Ping just tried to harm my child, and I'm worried I won't be able to guard against her schemes."
"Don't worry, Yan Xi. I will do everything in my power to protect the child in your belly. I won't let anything happen to it, and I promise I won't tell anyone about this."
She raised three fingers and swore to me with a serious expression.
Ever since she fell out with Shangguan Zili, I no longer had to be overly cautious around her.
"Yan Xi, I think we should set off as soon as possible. As long as we deal with that woman Jin Ping, your child will be safe for now."
Bright Moon made sense; the situation was too chaotic. The sudden appearance of Jin Ping had thrown everything into disarray.
"You should rest first. I've heard that pregnant women need plenty of rest. I'll step outside for a bit."
Early in the morning, Mingyue had already roused everyone with her unusual enthusiasm. Standing in the living room, she announced to everyone, "Everything is packed; we can set off for the Xuan Sect now."
I cast a grateful glance at her, knowing that she was doing all this for my sake. Right now, the priority was to shake off Jin Ping; there was no way I could go to the Xuan Sect while he was around.
"We're not going to the Xuan Sect," Mu Xuanche's abrupt statement left everyone stunned.
I noticed a smug smile creeping onto Jin Ping's face, while Shangguan Mingyue rolled up her sleeves, ready to confront Mu Xuanche at any moment.
I looked at him coldly and said, "Reason?"
"I need to go to Sichuan Miao Village first to retrieve something very important. Yan Xi, if you want to return to the Xuan Sect, let Mingyue accompany you back. Once I have what I need, I'll come to pick you up."
His expression was calm, showing no signs of distress.
If I left like this, Jin Ping would surely follow. By the time I returned, I might not even have a husband anymore.
"Then I'm not going to the Xuan Sect. If you’re going to Miao Village, I’ll go with you," I declared.
As soon as the words left my mouth, Jin Ping's face darkened; he looked as if he wanted to leap over and bite me.
Mu Xuanche glanced at me and earnestly said, "Yan Xi, this trip to S Province involves entering an ancient tomb. It's quite dangerous. You should return to the Xuan Sect first and wait for my news."
Entering an ancient tomb—it seemed they were going to search for the locations recorded on those six gold leaf papers. This was something I had to be a part of.
"No way, if you go, I have to go too. No one can stop me," I declared firmly.
Seeing my determination, Shangguan Mingyue chimed in, "If Yan Xi doesn't return, I won't either. Wherever Yan Xi goes, I will follow."
Mu Xuanche nodded helplessly, a heavy displeasure evident on his brow.
The only one happy in the room was Bai Qiling; without having to return to Mingyue, he could continue to linger around her.
Originally, we were supposed to set off for the Xuan Sect, but our route changed to Miao Village in S Province.
None of us expected that this journey would be so perilous.
