As soon as Shangguan Mingyue finished her meal, we were hurried upstairs to rest.
I originally didn't want to sleep because I had already slept too much the night before. However, if I didn't sleep, Mu Xuanche would act up, which scared me into pulling the covers over my head and pretending to be asleep.
To my surprise, I actually fell asleep not long after.
After a while, I was groggily pulled up by Mu Xuanche. Just as I was about to ask him what he was doing, he covered my mouth with his hand, silencing me.
His caution made me too frightened to speak, and I stared at him wide-eyed. He reached for a coat nearby and carefully helped me put it on before leading me out of bed.
His rare tenderness captivated me. When we reached downstairs, Bai Qiling appeared with Shangguan Mingyue in front of us.
They clearly had separate rooms, so how did they come out of the same room? Looking at Shangguan Mingyue's dazed expression, I realized she was so oblivious that she wouldn't even know if someone sold her out.
I thought about reminding that confused girl, but after catching Bai Qiling's fiery gaze, I silently held back.
Better to offend a gentleman than to provoke someone else.
Being led downstairs by Mu Xuanche, I asked him, "Where are we going at this hour?"
He didn’t respond and simply walked ahead to open the door.
Three incense sticks were burning prominently on the door—two long and one short.
This was an omen of something sinister.
I went to pull Mu Xuanche, but he stepped forward and tossed the incense on the ground aside with a look of disdain.
"Just a trick," he said.
The incense that had been thrown down did not extinguish; it continued to burn vigorously. The scorched ground left behind a dark shadow that vaguely resembled the character for "death."
Shangguan Mingyue leaned in, took a glance, and exclaimed, "Damn, it's like a ghost! How terrifying!"
Instantly, the temperature dropped a bit, and I couldn't help but roll my eyes at her.
"Mingyue, what are these two beside us?"
Having spent time together, I had unconsciously started to think of them as people. It was only when Shangguan Mingyue spoke that the atmosphere turned awkward.
As if to ease the tension, Bai Qiling crouched down to examine the burned "death," reaching out to touch the marks on the ground.
With that strange smile on his face, he must have already figured out what it was. His grin was so sly that I couldn't believe he hadn't revealed it yet.
"Alright, Young Master Bai, no need to keep us in suspense. What is it?"
"Phosphorus Powder," Mu Xuanche suddenly chimed in with two words that drew everyone's attention.
Bai Qiling looked at him with slight surprise. "How did you know?"
Glancing back at him, Mu Xuanche left everyone with just the back of his head and a mocking remark directed at Bai Qiling. "Only an idiot would need to crouch down to investigate."
Loud, unrestrained laughter echoed from behind, belonging to Shangguan Mingyue. Without needing to turn around, I could imagine the sour expression on Bai Qiling's face.
I turned my head to look at Mu Xuanche, noticing that his expression remained unchanged. I couldn't tell if he was simply lacking in emotional intelligence or if he was deliberately trying to mess with Bai Qiling. I decided to play the fool and asked him, "Why are you being so straightforward? Bai Qiling was originally trying to put on a show, but now he's completely exposed."
He glanced down at me, his dark eyes sparkling with a hint of light.
"Doesn't he know whose territory he's in? He dares to laugh recklessly."
In an instant, I understood his meaning. It turned out he was retaliating against Bai Qiling for his mocking remarks directed at me. A sweet feeling surged within me, and I tightened my grip on his hand.
It was just past two in the morning, and the streets of the village were eerily quiet. The only source of light came from an old yellow bulb flickering on a telephone pole at the intersection, casting a dim glow over the road.
I had no idea where we were headed. It seemed that only Mu Xuanche and Bai Qiling knew what we were up to tonight.
When we reached the entrance of the Wang family's house, I was pulled to a stop.
"What are we doing at the Coffin Shop?" I asked Mu Xuanche, but he didn't respond.
Instead, he led me forward and pushed the door open. Bai Qiling attempted to follow us in but was stopped by him. "We're in a hurry; you two go to another spot."
"You can handle it,"
When Bai Qiling asked the question, she wasn't looking at him but at me. I understood her meaning clearly; she felt I was a hindrance to Mu Xuanche's retreat.
I was just about to retort when Mu Xuanche added, "Why don't you leave her here and see how I do?"
Behind him, Shangguan Mingyue immediately chimed in, "Sure, I'll stay with Yan Xi."
Bai Qiling's brows furrowed in anger as she pulled Shangguan Mingyue away.
Without any effort, Mu Xuanche had easily turned the tables on Bai Qiling.
Everyone has their weak points, and for Bai Qiling, it was Shangguan Mingyue. But for Mu Xuanche, would I be his weakness?
I couldn't be sure; I didn't even dare to ask.
Arriving at the Royal Hall, a massive red lantern hung in the center, casting a strange light.
A child was jumping around under the lantern. As I got closer, I realized it was the ghost that had been left hanging from the beam.
Seeing me approach, the ghost seemed eager to get close but was wary of Mu Xuanche beside me.
His eyes kept darting toward Mu Xuanche, not daring to move an inch.
I had no resistance against children, especially since this one was innocent; his death was more of a pity than anything else.
Releasing Mu Xuanche's hand, I stepped forward.
"Hello, little brother, do you remember me?"
He nodded. "I remember. Thank you for saving me, sister. My name is Wang Zongze."
"How about you help Wang Zongze recite the rebirth chant?"
I hoped that this child could be reincarnated soon, finding a better family to start a new life.
He shook his head. "No, I want to stay with Grandpa."
"Wang Zongze, come in,"
A sudden voice interrupted our conversation. The child smiled at me and said, "Sister, the brother in your belly is so cute; he's even waving at me."
Without waiting for my response, he ran inside.
I reached down to touch my belly. Is it a brother in there?
"What are you thinking about?"
I looked up at him. "Is it a boy in there?"
"You should know that."
He gave me a look as if I were foolish, which made me want to hit him.
I hadn't even had an ultrasound; how would I know?
He raised an eyebrow, his gaze becoming somewhat profound. "What’s wrong? Are you unhappy?"
"Actually, having a boy is fine, but if it could be a girl, that would be even better," I admitted, unable to hide my disappointment in my tone. The mother-daughter outfits I had planned would go unused.
"There are still chances."
He replied with that, which made my face turn a bit red.
I recalled something; that damn Big Fox. I remembered when I asked him what would happen if it turned out to be a girl during my last visit to the lodge. He was so confident, claiming he could protect both. Now I realized he had been deceiving me all along.
Damn, this Big Fox, he doesn't even think when he lies.
"Old man, I'm here now, why don't you come out?"
Since it was time to get down to business, I dared not mess around any longer and quietly stood aside, waiting for the person inside to come out.
Soon, Uncle Wang emerged slowly, leaning on his cane.
Seeing him like this, I couldn't help but feel a pang of sympathy; he looked much older than before.
I wondered what the Wang family had gone through to leave him in such a state. He seemed like a completely different person.
Fortunately, his spirit still seemed decent enough; his two black-and-white eyes were bright and full of life.
He scrutinized Mu Xuanche for a moment and asked with slight confusion, "Are you looking for me? Didn't the Gu Family Girl tell you to leave the village? Why are you still here?"
"Did she tell you to leave so you could stir up trouble here?"
As soon as Mu Xuanche said that, I knew things were definitely more complicated than they appeared. I wasn't foolish; even though Uncle Wang seemed to have my best interests at heart, human nature is unpredictable.
"I don't know what this brother is up to. If there's nothing else, please leave. It's getting dark and it's not safe to keep anyone here."
Uncle Wang's face turned cold as he turned away and issued an eviction order.
Mu Xuanche didn't move, and neither did I; we waited for his next command.
"Brother, you really dare to call me that? I'm over a hundred years old, and you still dare to call me brother."
His cold voice dripped with sarcasm, causing the figure of Uncle Wang in front to pause.
Uncle Wang turned around, flicking his sleeves in anger. "Brother, I advise you to leave early."
Mu Xuanche stared at him, letting out a cold laugh. "Haha, what a joke."
"Blood Man, are you still pretending?"
Blood Man... what does that mean?
