Accompanied by Mu Xuanche, I was granted permission to enter Shangguan Mingyue's hospital room.
Due to excessive blood loss, her face appeared particularly pale.
When I entered, she was in the midst of an argument with Bai Qiling.
Bai Qiling was insisting that she stay in bed, refusing to let her get up.
Shangguan Mingyue, being stubborn, would never listen to Bai Qiling, and the two of them were really going at it.
Bai Qiling was managing to avoid Shangguan Mingyue's attempts to get up, but that girl with no sense of propriety only became more determined.
Seeing that things were escalating and they might actually come to blows, I had no choice but to knock on the door to remind them to be careful.
As soon as the knocking sounded, the two inside froze as if they had been caught in a spell.
When Shangguan Mingyue saw me, she shouted, "Wow, Yan Xi, I've missed you so much!" and tried to rush over, only to be grabbed by Bai Qiling by the collar, struggling fiercely.
This pair of adversaries made me walk over and pull Shangguan Mingyue back to calm her down before Bai Qiling finally let her go.
"Are you okay, Mingyue?" I asked.
"What could possibly be wrong with me? It's this weird person who's neither male nor female, always pushing me around. He hasn't done anything to you, has he?"
Seeing her lively demeanor reassured me that she was fine. Besides, Bai Qiling wouldn’t let anything happen to her. I secretly glanced at Bai Qiling behind her and couldn’t help but want to laugh at how flustered and helpless she looked.
Noticing that I hadn’t responded, Shangguan Mingyue hurriedly pushed me.
"Alright, Mingyue, don't worry, I'm fine,"
Her gaze fell on Mu Xuanche behind me, a knowing look on her face.
"No wonder, it turns out your husband has returned. Bai Qiling only dared to act up because I had no one to protect me. Boohoo, I'm so pitiful,"
She didn't notice Bai Qiling rolling her eyes behind her, nearly rolling them right out of her head.
Fearing that I might laugh and embarrass Bai Qiling, I found an excuse to pull Mu Xuanche outside.
"Hey, do you know what the relationship is between Bai Qiling and Mingyue? It feels a bit off,"
Mu Xuanche shook his head, then smiled mysteriously.
I couldn't quite grasp the meaning behind it; his shake of the head indicated he didn't know, but that smile suggested he might know something. This left me feeling uncertain.
Not wanting to guess, I directly asked him, "What exactly do you mean?"
"Wife, I don't know the relationship between Shangguan Mingyue and Bai Qiling, but I do know that after Bai Qiling's death, his family arranged a Ghost Marriage for him. What happened afterward is beyond my knowledge."
From this, I deduced that Shangguan Mingyue might be Bai Qiling's Ghost Marriage wife. She seemed unaware of it, but Bai Qiling certainly knew, which meant these two had some unresolved issues to deal with.
Mu Xuanche arranged for me to return to the hospital room to rest safely.
"Are you leaving again?"
The hint of complaint in my tone was so obvious that even I could hear it, let alone Mu Xuanche.
He immediately stopped in his tracks and turned to look at me.
I thought he would be angry; after all, men generally dislike women who meddle.
"I'm not leaving. I'm going to find Bai Qiling to ask a few questions and then I'll be back."
His explanation was quite reassuring. I never expected that I would end up in such a situation, but I nodded obediently and let him go.
After Mu Xuanche left, I received a call from the big man. He mentioned that he had matters to discuss with the Island Master, so he returned to the island without saying goodbye, reminding me to take care of myself.
Before I could even thank him, he was gone.
Lying in bed, I felt a persistent discomfort stirring in my stomach. Worried that something might be wrong with the baby, I climbed out of bed and decided to find Bai Qiling.
As I approached the consultation room, I heard Mu Xuanche's low voice from inside, followed by Bai Qiling's reprimanding tone: "Xuan Wang, you've searched for this corpse for a thousand years. If you don't cherish it, at least don't torment me!"
Sensing something was off, I hesitated and didn't push the door open. Instead, I crouched down nearby and peered through the gap to observe what was happening inside.
Mu Xuanche had his back to me. On his bronze-colored back was an extremely long wound that nearly split him in half.
Bai Qiling was stitching up the wound with needle and thread. I had placed an invisibility talisman on myself; both of them were spirits and couldn't sense my presence.
I covered my mouth to stifle any sounds. Why had Mu Xuanche sustained such a serious injury? Was he hiding it from me because he didn't want me to worry, or was there another reason?
Bai Qiling showed no mercy as she worked on the wound. Mu Xuanche didn't even furrow his brow; his hand gripped the steel bed tightly, enough that it seemed like he might bend it out of shape.
"When are you planning to tell her?"
It was Bai Qiling's voice. The "her" he referred to must be me.
"I haven't decided yet," Mu Xuanche replied, his tone devoid of warmth.
"You can't hold on like this for much longer. Half of your Primordial Spirit is with her, and on top of that..."
"Bai Qiling," he interrupted coldly, as if he wanted to say something but was cut off.
Silence fell in the room. I curled up and returned to the hospital bed.
Lying there, my heart continued to race.
The bloodstain on my ring finger contained half of Mu Xuanche's Primordial Spirit. What was he hiding from me? Why did Bai Qiling say he couldn't last long? And what had happened to him this time?
"What are you thinking about?"
Just as I was lost in thought, Mu Xuanche's voice broke through.
I looked up to see him standing at the door of the room.
His expression was blank, showing no signs of pain, and he moved so quickly.
After a moment of contemplation, I replied, "My stomach was hurting a bit earlier, and I was considering whether to call Bai Qiling to come take a look." In the end, I decided it was better not to let Mu Xuanche find out for now.
"No need,"
he replied before walking over to me, placing his palm on my belly. After a moment, he let go.
"Don't worry, the baby is fine. It's just that our child is developing faster than others and can already sense some external information."
In our village, there are quite a few people my age having children. I have seen pregnant women before.
Logically, I should be three months along now, and my belly should be getting bigger, but it only has a slight bulge, which makes me a bit worried.
"Mu Xuanche, why isn't my belly getting bigger?"
He looked at me with amusement. "Because the child you're carrying is different from others, so it will only be this big for now. After ten months, I will naturally make arrangements."
That made sense; my husband is a ghost, and indeed my child is not quite like others.
If it were an ordinary family, going through what I am experiencing during pregnancy would mean they wouldn't be able to keep even ten children safe.
Having resolved my concerns about the baby, I quietly studied Mu Xuanche, trying to discern something from him.
But in the end, I couldn't figure anything out, which instead caught his attention.
"What are you looking at?"
"Mu Xuanche, let me tell you about what happened this time, and you can analyze it for me."
He nodded in agreement as I recounted the situation with Cao Jin. However, I didn't mention the secret that Cao Jin had used to bargain with me.
For some reason, I felt it was better not to tell Mu Xuanche just yet.
"I didn't expect it to be him," Mu Xuanche said coldly, a strange smile on his face.
"Do you know Cao Jin?" I asked Mu Xuanche.
He replied, "Do you know how Cao Jin died?"
"I've heard some things; supposedly he died in a car accident."
"That's true, but it was your grandfather who caused it. He essentially died by accident at your grandfather's hands. The Cao family has been investigating this matter for years but found no evidence."
"My grandfather?"
I was shocked to find out that my grandfather was involved.
Mu Xuanche had stayed in front of my family's tomb for over a decade, so he knew all the happenings in the village.
He told me that Cao Jin had always been obsessed with techniques and wanted to seek my grandfather as a master. However, my grandfather did not take on disciples, so Cao Jin had no choice but to learn on his own.
Later, he somehow heard that my grandfather had a powerful book, and he intended to steal it. After several failed attempts, he decided to frame my grandfather and father instead.
In the end, my grandfather discovered his plan. Originally, he intended to drive Cao Jin out of the village, but due to a twist of fate, Cao Jin ended up in a car accident and lost his life.
As I sensed something was off, an increasing unease settled in my heart.
I wanted to call Liu Qingfeng to ask what was going on, but no matter how I tried, I couldn't get through. I couldn't reach my parents either. What if something happened to them?
"Mu Xuanche, I think we need to go home and check," I said.
"Liu Qingfeng isn't stopping you from going back," he replied.
I insisted, "I'm worried something might have happened to my parents. Will you come with me to check?"
He nodded in agreement.
